What Is Your Phone Number?

Don't worry I am not really asking for anyone's telephone number...
Making a point.
It is the 21st century and fewer people have a landline telephone in their homes. We seem more than content with a mobile phone or a cell phone, and this I suspect leads me on to my point.
I have no idea what my mobile number is - Why would I know? I do not phone myself.
If anybody ever asks for my numbers I have to go into my phone and find it - I know there is a 7 in it.
So - do you know your mobile phone number?

It's weird how we can readily remember landline numbers (even with STD codes) but never mobile phone numbers.
I don't have a mobile phone at the moment but when I did I could never remember the number. When I go (rarely) for interviews I'm looked at like some alien when I tell them I have no mobile number for them to contact me on so I give out my landline instead. Why that should be a problem for these people I don't know.
I would have to look up John's mobile number that is stored on the landline phone as I can't remember that either. It does indeed have a 7 in it, probably more than one actually..but the rest? No chance lol.

Very true. Something else I've noticed. Even though landline numbers (with STD code) are just as long as mobile phone numbers, the latter seem longer to me, its very strange!

Here is something else... This is going to sound very very strange.
Landline numbers seem to have a rhythm or tune when you recite them - A mobile does not have that

I think because we don't have to remember the numbers any more - We don't

Haha! Of course, I know my own phone number. We are no longer in the days of memorizing all our friends'/familys' phone numbers. Technology is great and it certainly makes things easier yet it makes us think less and the smarter our phones get the dumber we get. I try my hardest to realize this and make an effort to memorize the phone numbers of those closest to me just for the sake of holding on to what we took for granted in the past; the ability and act of memorization.
I do think it is important that if you can remember only 1 number in your life (other than 911) you remember your own. I get asked for my phone number at least once a week and in case of emergencies you should definately know it. You know your driver's license number and social security number...you should know your own phone number.
Also if you have kids, they should have your phone number memorized also. I have a 6 year old and she must know our phone number and address by memory and I pop quiz her every once in a while just to make sure it's fresh in her mind.

Your post is not in the least patronising
memorising a phone number will not expand my mind

Why do you need to remember it?
It is on your phone.
Using a phone these days is easy, there is no typing in of a number - just press a person's name

Actually, I do know my tracfone number and I honestly hardly ever even use my tracfone. I probably spend about 20.00 every 3 or 4 months on it and that is usually to buy more time rather than minutes. Not only that...I am blonde to boot. I just am old school and have never used my phone to memorize numbers. I have only given my phone # out to a very small handful of people in the few years that I've had it but honestly, if you asked, I could tell you what it was without having to look it up. I think it is a "young people" thing. You guys rely on technology to keep track of things. I grew up in an era where we just did not have all this stuff and we keep paper trails and memorize things.

Young People?
That is funny - I also grew up in an era when memory was needed more than now.

No. I have a mobile - £6.95 from T Mobike about 6 years ago. Can't stand the things really.onky hit it for "in an emergency". Why are we so obsessed about the blooming things? I'd ban people from phoning in the street. Bring back phone boxes and make them call from there! Children der 16 should not be allowed them at all e Celt under supervision if the child catcher from Chiity Chitty Bang Bang! I am such a Luddite that I even wrote this in ink!

Four or five years ago I would have echoed your views, but as a commuter I now find the smartphone an essential bit of kit - I am using it to write this reaponse. it also has games, music and a decent camera.
However I don't know the phone number

hi there robspeakman,
with reference to your post, i know exactly my phone numbers. so whenever somebody ask me what is my number, then, i can easily furnish them with my contact numbers. i was able to memorize it because, i used to order a print of my business cards, hence i need to check the detail written on it. anyway, it is not really require but in abrupt situation, i guess, it must be.

awww (disappointed) I thought you were asking my number. our number is usually 11 digits in the Philippines but I am not counting the number of digits here in Thailand. Our landline number is 7 digits if local and 10 if international. ( remember my land line number because it is just 7 digits and we have it for years.
My number here in Thailand... I don't I will open my contacts folder since I put my number there. I wrote it somewhere in my little notebook.. wait.. ahh yes there it is.

I know my mobile phone number, it is new but i have memorized it in no time at all because luckily i was given such a good number that is easy to memorize.
We do have a landline as well, we got it for purposes of calling establishments, etc. who knows when you will need to call one. Sometimes though the only purpose it has for us is when we are going to call for a delivery. heheh
On the reason why we need to memorize our phones, i guess its just easier that way, if i have to give it to someone i no longer need to find it in my phone and just give it right away.
It is also good to memorize another number, your wife, parents, brothers- in case of emergency (we should understand that we can sometimes not have our phone with us) we know a number to call.
This has happened to a friend of mine and the public vehicle they were riding on was robbed, and so everyone's phone was asked to be given to the robbers. luckily my friend memorized one number and she called the number to pick her up in a place where they were left!

At the moment i do not have a cell phone as i was stupid enough to put it in my pants pocket not check the pants pocket when doing laundry and it got washed and ruined. Tho when i did have one i remembered the number for awhile then had yo go look it up lol. My hubby knows his cell number by heart but every so often he needs to look it up just not much tho. My dad always says he doesn't know his cell number because he never calls himself or uses it lol.

I actually do know my cell phone number. But when I first got it I had a very hard time remembering it. I always had to look in my phone to find it. But over time we do tend to remember it.

For nearly ten years we only had mobile numbers and not home phones. Not that we were young, but we moved from the UK to California and there was little need for a home phone. The home and mobile (cell) numbers have exactly the same pattern to them ie number of digits. You cannot tell a landline from a cell phone here.

I do, and my landline. But I'm constantly having to type it in emails so it's sort of stuck. Other than those ones, I think the only others I know by heart are my parents' landline and the number of parents of a school friend who haven't changed it since I was a child and memorised it.

We keep our land line, of course someone is always home. But I agree I don't know my cell phone number and most of the time I give it to no one. If I am not at home I don't want to have to talk on the phone unless it's an emergency and since most of those now happen on the ranch. No one needs to know, besides it costs more.

Im the same here, had my cell almost 2 years now. When I go to put time on it, I have to go to my purse and find a card with my number on it. As I never call me own phone.

Do I know my mobile phone number? Of course I know my own cellphone number. Why do I need to memorize it? Well, besides that it's not that hard to remember, I think it's very wise and more convenient if we could memorize it in case someone is asking for your number and you don't need to look it up in your phone. I don't rely too much on the technology to do a very simple task :)
And about the landline, I think it's more practical now a days to have a cellphone rather than a landline phone, since we spend most of our time outside our home. And in my case, I'm only at home on weekends and it's my rest day. As much as possible I don't want to be bothered on my rest days, that's why I don't share my landline number to anyone. In fact I don't use it much, and the only reason that I have a landline, it's a package deal with my internet service provider.
Actually I am thinking to change my internet/landline service provider with internet+cable service package! I'm just waiting my 2-year contract with my current service provider to expire :)
