Memory Hog

I guess that the next smartphone I get will have to have more memory. If nothing else, it will need more memory so that after I install the darn Facebook app, there is room for anything else.
Most of the android apps on my phone are 5 or 6 megabites, and most of them can be installed on the SG card too. This darn thing is 20 megs all by itself and as soon as I log in, it's another 7 or 8 megs. Can only be installed on the phone, not the SG card. So I am constantly running into memory problems.
Stupid Facebook app...

Thanks, but feel free to whine about something else then, since this is basically a whining discussion...

I wonder if there is any way to get around that. Just one more reason I am glad I don't have a cell phone.

As soon as you log in? That kind of makes me think twice of getting an android myself. I think I would be satisfied with an android if I just use Facebook in their web browser. How many of those extra apps do you use though? If it were me, I probably would take out apps I'm not using to improve performance. Damn phones are just like a computer. The less applications the better they work.

I did delete the maps app, and it wanted to come right back. Anyway, if you get an android with more memory than mine, I'm sure it wouldn't be an issue.

Love the article link you posted. I think I will end up with an android only because a small screen just isn't cutting it for me anymore for my eyesight.
Did you turn off the phone and back on when it wanted to come back?

Probably not until they got the dreaded "phone storage is low" message...

Two days ago I deleted my Facebook account, regrets? absolutely NONE, best thing I did, I wish I had done it sooner. I only have a basic phone, I am not up with the technology and all the gadgets and apps that are available. I just have my mobile on me when I am in the car in case I break down, it has a camera and I can text and that's all I need.

Well then Mister, you are OFF my friends list (on FB)!!!
jk
I"m not a huge fan of Facebook, not really, but that's where pretty much all my out of town family have chosen to be.

I have an ipad and iphone and I love photos of my new grandchildren and also love to have all my music on them. So I am forever deleting this program and that, to get more room for the photos and the music. Plus I have the novel I am writing through icloud, I do not know about android phones, but it sure is frustrating when I have to take something else to put more room for something else.

That sucks. I have the FAcebook apps on my iphone and ipad, but only use the one on my laptop and I have a lot of memory on that -so far.

Hello Dawn,
Thanks for the discussion. So far I have avoided the smart phone, but I do have Kindle Fire which uses Android. I noticed there was a specific app for Facebook specifically for Android at least from Amazon. Perhaps there is one for your device also. Since like a phone, Kindle Fire uses WIFI and has limited storage, it is limited also in how much it will handle. I did notice that the newest version of Fire allows for a larger capacity storage, lol...for a higher price. I'm not sure how much space the Facebook app for Android requires, but I'm sure it isn't as much as the full version on my desktop computer and I do not even try to play any of the games within Facebook on my Kindle Fire. I prefer the Android apps designed for Android devices. Hope you get some resolution to the problem.

This is an android app that I'm whining about. I could just delete it and use Facebook from the web browser, and that would eliminate the memory problems.

that doesn't surprise me. When I talked to my husband after posting this he said I wasn't using the app, I was doing it from the web instead for exactly the reason you stated. Tells you how much I know about the storage the app eats. I'd eliminate the memory problem too, and obviously, my hubby did it for me!

What you need is a compressor to compress the 20megs of space that fb uses into something more manageable. To get this compressor that was especially designed for fb users you need to download the app called N.U.T.S. Now selct preferences and go to SEEDS. Then go to tools and press the delete button.
There you are! Problem solved as everything has now been deleted from your smartphone so there is now room for FB. FB you note, has now expanded to 20 megs all by itself. Problem solved. Call on me if you need help again.

I don't really know anything about the facebook mobile app as I am the person that will typically get onto facebook from the internet as opposed to using a mobile app. However, one of the things that my friend and I discovered when it came to smartphones is that you really need to pay attention to the other things that are running in the background. Though we'd never told her phone to keep several apps running at all time but there were a number of apps that were always running in the background.

the mobile app is useful for when you can't get there through a browser, but there's a downside to everything.

Yup, every upgrade pretty much makes it worse...
The last one keeps asking me if I want to find friends. I say no to it at least once a day.

I guess. It doesn't even have a "don't ask again" option, it's either "yes" or "later"...

Well, the same problem, I reflected on smartfone I had before.
Unfortunately there were applications that were unable to be installed on the SD card external memory.
But now I have a phone that has more mass storage, so that I can install a variety of applications (including Facebook) simultaneously.
Even when I was in store too many sms appeared an error message saying "low memory". To me it made ??me come to the exhaustion, nervous!

I tend to go for the free phones, but I will remember to look for more memory next time.
