Hair conditioner....

I have very long hair....it reaches my waist and a bit below. When I wash it I have to use a lot of conditioner so I can comb through it and get through the knots. This morning I was reading an article on yahoo about how to take care of long hair and one of the suggestions was to use apple vinegar as a conditioner. Since the difference in price between conditioners and vinegar is huge I think I'm going to give it a try the next time I wash my hair. Have you ever used vinegar as a conditioner for your hair? How has it worked out? How long does the smell of vinegar stay in your hair?

Well I have read that a lot but honestly haven't tried them yet since my hair is short :).
Some people also said that using baking soda shampoo with the vinegar as conditioner works well because it's the least irritating combo for our hair scalp.

My eyes opened wide Vaseline. Its to expensive to go in my hair in this area. I'm just wondering how much do you need to use to see results?

I have never heard of Vaseline in the hair before. You use that for shampoo? How does that work for you?

Hello ctryhnny. Years ago when I was a very young girl I lived with my grandmother and all we used as a hair rinse was vinegar. It was all she would buy because of limited income. We also used Tide laundry soap for both hair and dishes as well as for laundry. If we wanted to darken our hair we used apple cider vinegar and to lighten our hair we used white vinegar or lemon juice. The smell of vinegar didn't last very long. The oder was gone before our hair was dry.

Before I used to put conditioner on my hair daily but now just every other day or when its too dry. On weekends or holidays that I can stay home the whole day, I put mayo on my hair for 30 minutes then rinse. I also put hot coconut oil juice.

About once a month, I use about 2 ounces of vinegar in a half glass of water on my hair before the final rinse. My hair is very short, so you would need proportionately more. This removes all shampoo and/or conditioner build up. The smell of the vinegar does not last long. I would use the vinegar rinse more often only if your hair is oily.

I'd use a conditioner for dry hair on the days your hair is dry and reserve the vinegar rinse for the oily days.

I heard that the vinegar can wash away the chemical stuff in your hair from the hair shampoo and hair conditioner. Since these stuff will make your hair unhealthy. And this is the most function of the vinegar. However, I have not tried it yet.

I never tried it but I know vinegar has many uses. You have many responses here that say it's good but are they talking about regular vinegar or the apple vinegar? Some are just saying vinegar. I'd like to know myself.
I just use Tea Tree Oil With Lavendar and that makes my hair very soft and manageable and that shampoo is my favorite....smells great too. I don't have long hair though and I do switch around using other shampoos so my hair doesn't get used to it.

From what I read it has to be apple cider vinegar. I'm not sure but I thought I was specific in my discussion. I've always switched shampoos too because I read somewhere that you shouldn't let your hair get used to one brand. I don't understand the reasoning behind it but I do it anyway.

You were specific but I know regular white vinegar is for sunburn and cleaning your coffee pot, etc. I've never heard of using Apple Cider vinegar for any of those things.
I've heard of the Apple Cider Vinegar is used for rinsing hair, but I never heard of it being for a conditioner....and I read you need to dilute it too.

i haven't tried that and i don't think i would lol.. i mean my hair might smell like vinegar..
i don't have problems with using conditioner frequently, as my hair is short now and when it was long before i only put conditioner from the tip to the mid part and not on the scalp part as that will cause dandruff..

I have never used vinegar in my hair as conditioner before but if it works and is cheaper than regular conditioner than maybe ill use it too. I have long hair as well and it is hard to comb through and i need lots of conditioner as well. thanks for letting us know you heard about this so we can try it.

I also have a long hair and read about vinegar but never tried it. Based on some articles that I read, the smell will be gone as soon as the vinegar dried. Maybe I could also try this.
Have a great day and thank you for sharing this information with us.

Hello ! I have tried it once also and the smell was so strong ! Yes it is bit smooth but i didn't do it again because i am afraid what if my hair will be damaged , vinegar is strong. Rather i used other alternative as conditioner , the Avocado . Smash a little of it in palm then apply it in the hair for 10 mins leave it as is then rinse well. Try to comb hair , it is shiny and bouncy.

I am really not sure that it would work as a conditioner...but I do know that I use it often, as a rinse..to clean the hair shafts of the residuals left by shampoo's and conditioners. My hair is not as long as yours, but I do need to use a conditioner, as a lot of my work is outdoors and so am a victim of weather!
The smell of vinegar evaporates almost immediately...it is one of the staples I am never without...and is probably one of the best things in the world for sunburns, as it replaces the acidic acid in your skin. Applied often after a burn, it takes away the burning..and seems to stop all blistering. I learned this on my first visit to Honolulu..getting a severe burn..going to Emergency, where I was put in a tepid bath,(to reduce body temp.)and then slathered with vinegar...I was back out in the sun in 3 days (a bit more cautious of my exposure)and as I later worked in Honolulu for a month, when my son was young..I used it on him, too!
It also is my cleaning staple!

I use my homemade mayonnaise with vinegar as my daily conditioner. I just wash it with a fragrant shampoo. It makes the hair really soft.
