Breaking A Habit (Part 3)

Well, my friends ,I've made it another day without smoking! *pat on the back* I still get the urges to light up a cigarette first thing in the morning, after I've eaten and while I'm waiting for the internet to load. Yesterday, the first day of not smoking, I was busy doing house work. The hardest part of cleaning and doing things to keep me busy, I would reward myself with a break which consisted of smoking a cigarette. Still really haven't been around any smokers, so that will be the big test. I think I will be able to handle it though.
Now, I think since I'm quitting smoking, I'll start walking or riding my bike. There's still snow here, so should I walk it will be when the sun is shining and it's warm. Don't think I'll ride bike yet, I'll take baby steps and start out walking. I even have a pedometer I can wear and increase my steps each day there after. With the new beginning of a new year and a smoke free life, I want to get physically active. I know I need to lose some weight because of hibernating in the winter and substituting food for a cigarette. Also being active will keep my blood sugar under control and make my body feel better.

You are making so many good choices for your life. I am pretty sure that posting here will be a good way to be accountable for your improvements. Maybe you will motivate some of us to do more too.

I'm motivated by all my "family" here that have also done what I'm going through, it's kind of like a myLot support group and I thank every one of you! Maybe I can motivate some one to break a habit and not return to the habit after they broke it! Thanks for responding GardenGerty!!

I really do applaud you on quitting! Im 34 now, but I used to smoke. I stopped about 10 years ago maybe 12. I started smoking because the guy I was dating at the time had me stressed out. We were living together and he smoked. So I smoked. We were living with his friends and they smoked. So I did it as well. I would buy a pack, only smoke 2, then give the rest away, till I found myself smoking almost a pack a day. At that time I had 2 kids (boy and girl). One day I woke up with bronchitis (it lasted a week). I couldnt smoke because I could hardly breath and I was always coughing. I knew then that this was my chance in quitting. I did it. Less than a week later (6 days to be exact), Something bad happend to me. My car got broken into and they stole my purse (I had money in there for my bills, SS card, and plus, it was my favorite purse)! It was a test. I tried so hard not to smoke, AND I DIDNT!!!
The reason for my story is to let you know that there are people out there that will help and guide you through this (if you need someone) there are a lot of us out there. Dont give up on such a BIG goal.... YOU CAN (DO THIS)!!

Right now I'm distancing myself from smokers, after a few days of me not smoking, I will be able to be around them without wanting a smoke. I feel if they want to continue smoking that's their business, but I'm not! Thanks for responding! Should you ever decide to quit for real, come to myLot for support!

hi stoutjodee I did not k now you were also a diabetic. losing weight sure does help in controlling blood sugar. I am so prou d of you for quitting smoking as nicotine is a heart killer. I had to watch my hubby die because the stuff had killed all but twenty percent of his heart muscle. I do so applaud you to quit and you are being sensible in how you do it. Once I lolst a lot of weight with a pedometer and the ten thousand steps but sadly I again put on weight later but now I have gone down from 210 to 186 and its partly due to my thyroid not working and my doctor putting me on a thyroid medication . plus I cut my carbs way down too. I want to get to 150 and i will do it this year for sure.again congratulations on your quitting smoking. way to go.

Thanks for the words of encouragement @Hatley! Congratulations back at you, for losing weight and glad you found the real problem was the thyroid. Well, maybe by the end of the year we will have to have a discussion on breaking our habits and the success that we made!

That is great! You have to plan each day how you will keep busy so not to get bored and start to smoke again. They say walking is great exercise and you should try to set a goal of walking 10,000 steps a day for the best healthy life. If you take baby steps in achieving that goal you will feel so much better about not smoking anymore. I walk everyday with a pedometer which I put on first thing in the morning. I have reached 10,000 but I'm not able to do it everyday due to my schedule. Good luck before you know it you will be feeling so much better both inside and out.

It would really take a lot of courage to completely quit smoking. And I hope you could really do it. And with regards to doing some walking, that is really great! I think that would be the best gift you can give yourself--- a healthier you!

Be strong and keep it, friend! The reward of healthy life will be more better than a brief pleasure of smoking. So keep doing what you are doing, and you’ll be fine. And try not being around smokers as much as you can as well since not only they tempt you to start actively smoking again but being passive smoker is equally harmful like active smoker one.
