Very sad to say this to you friends..My father is addicted to smoking. There is another thing that he always like to do.He also drunks well. How can I call him back from all those things?I worry about my family. He works well and giving us money means to my mom to care the family. We tried the best to change this.He is not ready to do that. When we asks the reason,He says that he drunks and smoks to decrease the stress of his work.Oh..How is it possible??Do you have such experience that stopping any one from those things??I want to make him out from the circle of drunks and smoke. Thank you..

Hi Dassodils! I agree with everybody here. Only the will of your father can totally change him. However, though he wants to stop smoking and drinking it won't be that easy for him.
I appreciate your concern. I know that it is what every child would love to for his/her father who is addicted to smoking and drinking. As a daughter, I found it best for you and your family to constantly remind your father of the effects of his vices. If you remind him constantly, your words shall crawl on his mind. From time to time he can remember your words and it might allow him to meditate on it. Just don't surrender yet. Nothing is really impossible.

We all knew that to some smoking and drinking relieves stress especially from too much work, as what your father had been saying but if it becomes a habit it really affects one's health. Unless the person is determined to quit on something there's nothing we could do about it.

My dad was ever heavy smoker in the past. At that time we were also like you and we tried to persuade him to get rid of it but it was not possible. Finally he wanted to do it by himself for the sake of health. Smoking is a very addictive habit and it is really not easy to quit it. It depends on your determination. I hope one day your dad will realize it and then he will be willing to quit smoking and drinking.

Indeed, he is just the one who could stop himself from smoking. You could remind him always about how bad it is which for sure he already knows until he realized that it is really bad for his health then come to the point that he will really stop it. My dad is a smoker also before but it come to the point that he quit it before its too late. Good thing that there is no effect in his lungs after several years of smoking.

Smoking is a bad habit. But he has to decide when to quit himself. You cant tell him to quit. Everyone who smokes know how bad it is for him. But like any other habit the first step to quit, is wanting to quit.

Unfortunately, I don't think that there is anything that you can do to get a person to stop smoking or stop drinking when it is not something that they really want to do. You see, I'm a smoker and though I've tried to quit, I have found that smoking is the single most addictive habit that I've ever picked up in my life. As far as drinking goes, I'm not a heavy drinker although I will admit that I don't mind to have a drink now and then.
I would say to leave your dad alone about it and he will quit if it is something that he really wants to be able to do.

Hi Dassodils: I understand. It must be really hard for you because you care for your dad's health and you want to help him. However, remember that he is an adult and he is the only one who has the choice to decide on his own health. I hope you can find the right moment to make him notice how much you care about him and how you are suffering. If you speak with your heart he'll probably understand.

I agree with others here, you cannot stop someone from doing something they want to do. The only one that can change it is your father. And if he doesn't want to change then he won't, regardless of what you do.
Hopefully one day he will find the motivation to change his ways...

I understand that he did smoke and drink to reduce his stress, but it will be the never ending circle. I know that you care about your father so you want him to stop smoke and drink but unless it's his will to stop, you won't be able to tell him to stop. My cousin has stopped smoking for good after his dad passed away because of heart attack which is probable caused by his smoking habit. Even though long before his dad passed away he already know smoking is bad for health but he didn't stop. Only after the person he cares about passed away, he stopped. With will he then stopped very instantly after his dad passed away.
