My Computer is My Hobby

I love my computer. Since I have retired from my teaching job, my computer has taken place of my job. I don't use it for E-mails to tell jokes. I use it for writing articles and poetry on different sites and get paid for it. What I'd like to know is, since I would miss it very much if anything went wrong with it, is there any thing that a computer owner can do to help his/her computer stay "healthy" so as not to have to get a new one?

What a great question! I have good security on mine, and I run the scans daily, I did not know about the cleaning end of it I will be sure to do that. Congratulations retiring from a teachers job,I admire all teachers you have to be a special person to teach. Good luck in all your new adventures!

Thank you for your good wishes. You're right about having to be a special person---especially the way the kids are in today's world. they're not as polite as they used to be---even the girls who hardly ever caused problems.

I would say run your virus scanner alot. The thing that makes most computers quit working is a simple virus that could have been prevented. The thing that my brother always swore by and I have to agree with him on is to keep the fans on the back clean and clear. He used to tell me to take my case of the tower and vac the inside out just be careful to not pull out any wires or to touch any of the parts inside. He says that keeping it clean will keep the fans from working overtime to keep the pc cool. I have had the same computer for 10 years and every month we take the case off and clean it out removing any dust that may have built up. I recently updated to a new computer but it was not because my old one quit it still works fine but most of the things I wanted to do on it would not work since it was older than dirt when it comes to computers. The funny thing is that the computer I have had for 10 years was one that my brother built for us out of old parts that he was given when people upgraded their own computers. Good luck I would be lost with out my computer thank goodness I have a nice new laptop now so I dont have to worry to much about it.

Thanks for your great advice. You're lucky you have a brother who knows about computers. My husband does mot own a computer, and knows nothing about them so I have to call my neighbor which I don't like doing unless it is absolutely necessary. I have another neighbor who knows a lot about computers, but infortunately he moved to China. If I have something of importance to ask, I have to wait untol he comes back to the U.S to visit. I think it's wonderful that yhour computer can last for 10 years. I hope mine does!!!!

Hi Happielady, I love my laptop and it's my most useful and precious device all the time I work on it daily besides I do need it badly to get online to acquire latest info and knowledge that are really helpful in my investment. Since it's my valuable device certainly I always take good care of it so as to prolong its lifespan. It doesn't work as usual if facing internet interruption . I usually would let my laptop switch off to let it cool down, when I go to my part time work or away from home. Having cleaning of dust regularly to make it look decent as well. Have a nice day

I would say turn it off when not using it like when you go away from home for the day on on a trip to save energy. Also turn it off when your not using it so that if there is a storm and the electric goes out it wont hurt the computer like it did mine a few times. I need to turn mine off more when i go to bed or leave the house. Make sure it is clean. There are ways to clean a computer or the fan in a computer but i'm not sure how because my brother in law did ours when it needed. Update it on occasion as well. My computer is my hobby as well.
