I can't believe I'm starting a discussion about toilet paper, but here it goes! Do you ever have problems trying to start the roll of the toilet paper? It seems like they use a lot of glue on the end of the toilet paper. You usually end up ripping three sheets of toilet paper just to get the roll started. Maybe it's because we buy our toilet paper at dollar stores, but why spend a lot of money on some thing you're just going to flush down the toilet? As long as it feels soft to the touch,I'm good!
Another thing to think about for toilet paper. Do you prefer the toilet paper to be hanging down from the roll or hanging under the roll when it's on the toilet paper holder? I prefer it to be hanging down, it just seems like it unrolls better.
One last deduction on the subject of toilet paper. Have you ever been in a public restroom and the stall had no toilet paper? Hopefully you were with some one that could hand you some or you had some in your purse. I always make sure there is toilet paper in the stall first.
So, now that I've started the post of toilet paper, do you have any thing to add?

I always do. Every single roll I get it takes me 5 minutes to open. Also have same problem with those plastic bags for veggies in the super market. Never fails...

Yes, they are just as bad as some tiolet paper rolls. Sometimes the veggie guy has to help me open them.

There are few brands that I will buy. It has to be strong. I don't want to use TP that is going to fall apart in my hand.
I tried a different brand if TP yesterday. It's 36 rolls for $16 and change. It's as good as Charmin and like Chsrmin, I can use less. Better on the pipes.
I like my TP to be on top if the roll.

Thanks for reponding PointlessQuestions! For some reason or another I never liked Charmin, but I like the Angel Soft and the dollar store has some that's just like it and it comes in the double rolls that are 2 ply.

lol. this is hillarious! thank you so much. you don't know how much i needed to read this post. i agree about your theory on dollar store toilet paper. whether under or over, i never really thought about it much. i do have a problem with going to the bathroom and using it before finally realizing that there is no toilet paper.

Even some of the medium priced brands sometimes have the start problem. I don't know about the really expensive ones. Another problem I have encountered is when the sheets don't tear at the perforations and they tear down the role. I have had some brands that had this problem a lot and you can end up wasting a lot of paper. I like for it to hang down; that is come over the top and down in front. That seems to me to be the most convenient way. As far as public places go, I always check first and look for a stall has plenty along with not be obviously dirty.

Or another pet peeve of mine is when the perforations aren't at the same place on the 2 ply. It's like you have only 1 ply for a square and then the rest is 2 ply. I also agree with you in not getting a dirty toilet stall. Thanks for responding!

Well, I prefer 2 ply because I don't use as much so it's more economical. But I don't really like the new stuff that is 3 ply because it feels like I'm using a paper towel! I also don't like the ultra-soft stuff because it feels mushy.
I prefer the paper hanging over the roll. I always carry Kleenex in my purse so I don't have to worry about having no TP and that's because I was stuck once in a stall with no paper! The lady in the next stall was very nice and handed some through. After that I have always checked when I go in to see if there is any TP!

Yes, I prefer the 2 ply also in the double rolls. Yes, that's how I learned my lesson as well to make sure that there's toilet paper, because I was in a stall that didn't have any in it, but I was with my friend and the stall she was in had toilet paper so she gave me some. Thanks for responding!

yes I sometimes have trouble with opening the toilet paper but I don't buy it in dollar stores so it is the same everywhere.I like the roll to hang down from the back, but I can't put the toilet paper on the roll because my cat tears it up so we just leave it on the toilet tank top.

Oh yes when you go to a public place and you want to do number one, there are those flimsy little sheets designed for people whose number one comes in one swoop and all they have to do is a simple wipe and it is all clean. Whereas someone like me has to use the whole stack of those little tiny sheets. I prefer the roll hanging down from the roll because it lasts longer. And I hate having to find the beginning of the roll. Yes and when you buy the cheap rolls, they may not be as soft.
I did go to the public restroom and found no toilet paper, but the other stalls were occupied so could not go and ask them. Had to use kleenex.
So much for going to the toilet.

Usually when I have a hard time starting a roll it's in a public bathroom.....and yes I have been in a stall without any paper....so I usually carry one of the little packages of kleenex in my purse for emergencies! And I love mine when it goes over the top of the roll and drops down....so much easier to unroll!

Was this really a question of concern, or are you reaching for topics of discussion. This certainly caught my eye, so on that, good job! Yes, sometimes toilet paper is a pain in the b***. lol. It does tend to stick to the roll, but I've found that problem most prevalent with paper towels. I hang the roll with the paper over, unless I'm distracted or just plain don't care that particular day. There have been very rare instances where public toilets do not have paper, in my experience. I don't usually check. And...I have nothing to add about toilet paper besides the ones with ridges are really awesome.

It's just a funny discussion topic, but why not discuss about it? I too always have a lot of problems to start toilet paper, because first paper round is full with glue and you just can't start it while you don't break it.
I always buy toilet paper who have 3 layers so it will not be only soft, but also thick. And I buy toilet paper who have extra price, because full price is very expensive.
If we are talking about restaurants or other places. I always check if there is toilet paper before I use toilet, because there are times that they just don't have them and It is funny.

Hello, STOUTjodee! I am sorry but I was laughing while reading the first few lines of your post. But it is something interesting.
Just like you, I prefer it hanging down. It is like having the control of just stopping where you want it to stop than having it hang the other way.
I do not rely on restrooms' toilet paper coz I know that some doesn't have one or the maintenance would have forgotten to provide a new one so I always carry one all the time. I usually buy coreless toilet paper so it would not be bulky inside my bag.

I shop at a dollar-store too ... well, FAMILY DOLLAR stores (where the 'each thing costs a dollar'-rule isn't exactly hard-&-fast---sometimes, I'll go ahead and walk the few extra blocks to the BUY FOR LE$$), and I haven't had that 'glue'-problem lately.
I may not exactly understand 'costs,' but would it cost less to use less- and/or lighter glue than to use more- and/or heavier glue?
(And I remember--as that heavier stuff soaks through a few layers of that thin paper--sometimes I'd have to pry up the paper AGAIN a few squares in!)
I also think it's better to hang the paper under, so that any momentum-spin doesn't throw the paper over the roll and into the toilet (I don't know about yours, but my toilet & the toilet-paper holder are in close-quarters right next to each other).
I don't often use the stall (as men's rooms usually have 'urinals'--sort of like sinks, but a few feet lower and usually not sticking out so far--for men to 'empty out into' (unless they have to do a "number two")), but maybe this discussion will 'stick in my mind' enough to remind me to 'check for toilet-paper before I unload there'
I'd add one question (which I'll answer so you don't have to be embarrased ): How many squares do you typically use?
Of course, it slightly depends on the size of the squares; but I usually need to have about four layers of paper (as my 'wipe' is more of a 'scrape' ... like with "the three shells" in the Sylvester Stallone movie DEMOLITION MAN), using two separate pieces of paper (one for the massive residue, one for the remaining little bits).
And I really don't need much 'width' (as my 'issue' is usually not "explosive & leaving the blast over any area wider than the narrow portal itself") so I can fold one square to have a usable two-layer. That puts me at two squares per wipe, a total of four squares.
But that's just if I'm trying really hard to conserve paper. Usually I'm 'excessive'---using FOUR squares per wipe, for a total of EIGHT squares.
That way--though I ALWAYS wash my hands afterwards--I'm not 'carryin` some o` that around' if I forget

I usually only buy Royale because I get reactions to other kinds. I don't seem to have as much issues unless it get's real hot, and the glue sort of melts, or real cold and it freezes.
I think it folding and hanging over, just easier to roll it compared the other way. I ind the other way I tend to break it off, piece by piece because it wont roll.
I have been in public washrooms with no toilet paper, and usually I carry a spare roll in my bag or have some napkins with me.
Coloured toilet paper?.

Hi friend! Toilet paper is part of our everyday life, so here`s my answer. I agree that they glue the paper at the beginning. And my fingers are more dumbevery day. I like mine handing over the roll and don`t like it when I go to my daughter`s house. She prefers it the other way and has it hanging in a place where is very difficult to reach it. I buy the biggest rolls and always have a second roll at hand in such a place that even visitors can see where it is. As for public restrooms, I never go out without paper hankies who do as nice toilet paper too. THere!

My answer to your first part is to look NOT for the glued area but for the perforation to break to start the paper. Does it matter which way the paper hangs on the paper holder? LOL...you make this post so interesting to read.
As for the possible embarrassing situation of going into a stall where there is not toilet paper, I circumvent it by always carrying a packet of tissues with me when I go out of the house. Sometimes I do forget to bring the packet...but I do always make sure there is paper before going into the stall. Under extreme conditions, I would probably try to call for assistance from anyone outside the stall. Well, a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, right?

LOL great post..and something we all think about.
Reminds me of the latest TV commercials too..the bears and the Mother bear 'warning' the father bear not to use too much TP..lol my hubby would be insulted...
As for starting roll, it isn't just dollar store TP that sticks...
A few years ago my boss (a man) made the statement men always hang rolls with paper hanging over the roll while women always have the paper hang under the roll. LOL Must just be his wife because I and I would think most women, would hang it with the paper over the roll..
I carry kleenex in my purse just in case there is no TP...lol I don't want a stranger touching my TP...lol is that nuts???

Depending on the brand that we get some times some of the toilet paper is really easy to start and others a pain. The one we have been buying is very easy to start only MIT rip on piece of paper or none at all.
