My granddaughter who is inhigh school did not want to tske the usual languge that is required such as Spanish, Frnch,German or Latin. Instead she chose sign language which is also accepted as a language. in my cays we didn not have thst as a choice. I feel that her choice is a good one becajuse she can always do volunteer work or even bget a job. When she visited us, she and her girl friend was communicating with each ogther bhy dooing siognlangiage.. I thought theyu were grteat. I'm sorry we didn't have that choice swhenI wentto school. What do ogther people feel about this?

I would have definitely love to have had sign language then having to take spanish classes. I too didn't have that option unfortunately. Lucky for your granddaughter that she gets to choose this. I had to deal with a year of spanish and ended up failing till I took it in summer school and passed with a 95. I believe the summer school teacher was a better teacher then the regular school teacher. I hope your granddaughters loves this class and passes with a great grade.

Believe it or not, when I went to France, I tried to say something in French. The salesman said, "YOu can speak English." I felt so embarrassed because his English was much better than my French. I was really trying to show off.

I hope that ASL (American Sign Language) is offered as a language choice to fulfill the requirement when my daughter is in high school. I took French in high school - which I didn't use because I didn't go to college in Paris and last I checked I moved to California and not Canada. Anyway I already know a bit of sign I remember from a course I took prior to high school plus some I retained from deaf friends in high school. I taught my daughter the sign alphabet as well as some common words (milk, more, thank you, up, done, mom, dad etc) when she was little before she had a good grasp of language. I'd like to take a class again if I can find one offered that is free or fairly cheap.

My daughter took spanish and I had a babysitter that taught me spanish, it was fun doing it together. My son took chinese. It was exciting to be learning with him. I tend to mix up the two languages with them. It makes our conversations interesting! :)

To learn sign language can be cool and i never tried learn it before, could be different experience. All most people thought was that normal languages from different countries, while life can be quiet and unique.,to be honest,i also didn't had the choice for learning that.

I had to know, sign language, in high school, It wasn't a class, my best couldn't hear. He could read lips and most people had no idea. He taught, me and we had a lot of fun with it. There weren't too many other people who know, it including some of our teachers.

My deaf friends from high school could lip read very proficiently and the ones who had a bit of hearing were also able to speak pretty well. They were completely mainstreamed and just had an interpreter aide who signed during class. I felt bad that I couldn't communicate more effectively with them, they usually just watched me talk and would answer me back or write lol.
