I can't really understand Google Plus

Google Plus seems to be a famous and popular feature in Google. However, I don't really understand it. Actually I have registered an account just because I have to finish some online tasks. I can't find what's special for it. And it is frustrating that sometimes you can't find the Google Plus icon in the page. At that time you may have to use the browser Google Chrome so that you can see this icon.
