March 4, 2013 2:03am CST
Last week on Thursday suddenly my hearts says me I should visited on deaf and dumb school and something do for them. I purchase Kaccha Chiwada the taste was good and the person is famous for making this. Sit on my vehicle and want to reach the place where is school. The time was lunch time all members are coming from lunch and sit in a room there teacher introduce me and I take the permission to serve the chiwada. All were happy and I take the permission if I want to give something to them like snacks or cloths then I can give then sir says yes mam but inform me first. I say yes and next week I will came again with pani puri(gole guppe). There total 40 students and 7 girls and all are boys. I feel really we are lucky at least God gives us the eyes, mouth and ear. Now feel no grievance from God tears are came from my eyes and feel how they feel not talking and hearing how life is living.

Several people have gotten upset with the use of the term "dumb" ... i.e., "deaf and dumb school." I am very surprised, but wonder if it is cultural differences, that have brought about this negativism. "Dumb" in the specific case of the term "deaf and dumb" has absolutely NOTHING to do with intelligence! surekharathi is NOT calling the students at the school unintelligent or stupid -- the term "dumb," as used here, means that those students do not have the ability to SPEAK, in the same way that "deaf" relates to their inability to HEAR. Here is a dictionary definition: World English Dictionary dumb (d?m) — adj 1. lacking the power to speak, either because of defects in the vocal organs or because of hereditary deafness Granted, it does not seem politically correct, in this day and age, to continue to use the term "deaf and dumb" and, in many cases, people now use "deaf-mute" instead (although many object to that, as well), it really should be understood that the person who began this discussion is not being derogatory in any way.

Hello surekharathi You do not have to apologize at all! I wanted you and other members to see that the term "deaf and dumb" is not incorrect nor was it used with any intention to be hurtful. It is just not commonly used as it was in the past because, as you saw, there are people who do not care for the term and become upset. So people have certainly tried to come up with other ways to express it that do not include the word "dumb." As I said earlier, "deaf and dumb" has frequently been replaced by "deaf-mute" because that has less of a negative connotation. But, as you can see by the dictionary definition I offered, you did use a correct - but much older - term. That aside, you did something very nice for those students and I think was lovely of you. You have a good heart

I know the term dumb didn't mean to be hurtful and it doesn't have anything to do with the brain and being stupid it just makes me think of this and that's why i don'y like it.

That is definitely something you can be proud of surekharathi. Please understand, I am aware of cultural differences, but the word dumb can be considered an offensive term. The term mentally challenged is more suitable for the discussion. Continue to make a positive difference in the lives of people. Good day.

'deaf and dumb' is using very common in our place when saying about those who have problem with 'hearing and speech'. They are not mentally challenged people but physically challenged only. There is nothing to worry and feel bad on using the term dear.

I have learned something from the discussion while respecting cultural terminology. Please understand that I am coming from an American English perspective. I never thought the discussion was disrespectful. I was making a cultural attitude known. Continue to be a good person.

It was very nice of you. But I do find it sad that in 2013 that people think that people who are deaf are dumb. They are not. Calling deaf people dumb can affect their lives, their self esteem, the value they have in life. Being deaf doesn't make anyone dumb. Please think about that and change your way of thinking and get others to realize that deaf people are not dumb, they are very very smart. They just don't hear. Not their fault at all, either accident or injury or birth defect cause it. But it does not affect the mind. When I saw the headline of this, I was like WOW really they call it a deaf and dumb school. They use to to that here in America, but people like Helen Keller who was not only deaf but blind, show America that just because you have disabilities does not make them stupid or dumb.

Again, in the specific context of this discussion, the word "dumb" does NOT mean unintelligent or stupid. It means that a person has the inability to speak. I copied and pasted a dictionary definition below, if it helps to change the perception of the discussion starter here.

It is good for you to listen to your heart or your conscience. There are always people around us who need some kind of help. The person who does the charitable deed many times feels as much of a blessing as the one who is the receiver. This may be a new habit for you to do these things.

Hi Surekha bhabhi. Well it is really noble thing to go out and spend time and spread some happiness to such unfortunate people. I think this is what many people do not realize in their life. They always cry for such small things that they do not realize how small their problems are. I will take my children to ashrams and all from childhood days itself so that they will be able to realize how lucky they are even if they are going through bad times in life. Have a nice day !!! "Dumb," in the context of this discussion, does not have a single thing to do with intelligence. I have provided a dictionary definition below, if you would like to read it.

I know dumb means mute unable to talk so why do they call them dumb when dumb to me is stupid which they are not. Can't they just say deaf and mute.Tho again your very kind to have helped them.

Hello surekharathi this is checkmail and me too have been visiting one of such hospitals where there were school adjoins them for deaf and mute children.I was visiting it for mine own ear checkup, but really felt confused with emotions after observing them. Once i felt real happy and felt to love those kids but suddenly do felt sorry for their loss and almost lost mine every though. Just nothing can make it up to make their loss go away still managed to play with few kids. I literally didn't understand what they wanted, still remembering it.

I do consider myself to be very lucky that both of my children are perfectly able and they are able to use all five of their senses. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to have to go through life without having the opportunity to hear music or anything like that. In our state there is a school for the deaf that is about 45 minutes away from where we live. When I was in high school we used to have swim meets there on a regular basis and I always thought that it was really neat to see the different ways that deaf individuals have to do things.
