the hardest part about moving..

Moving my two dogs was the most challenging and stressful tasks of all. I did not have much problem with the labrador because he would follow me anywhere. The two local dogs are not used to being transferred and moved around. In fact, I could not even tie a collar on one of the two local dogs because he would run away and refuse to be collared. The first try was a failure. I already hired a small cab, did everything to entice the other one to come follow his brother who was already in the cab, but to no avail. When the vehicle started, this scared Randy the black dog who was already inside the cab. He got off as he found out that his brother Bernaard wasn't in the cab. So we had to leave them in the old house and I had to go back and forth to give them food three times a day for two days. On the third day, I brought back the huge cage because I planned to trick Bernaard by putting the food inside the cage and trapping him in it. This too was hard because Bernaard would only put half of his body in to eat the food inside. That means his two hind legs were left outside the cage so I could not close it without scaring him. It was a good thing I had some extra food which I gave again and again until he would really go inside. Finally when I gave the last food I had with me, I had to make a decision of putting his two hind legs in very quickly and closing the cage as quickly too. It was the last batch of food with me and I should not lose this opportunity. It was now or never since I had already contacted another vehicle for this purpose. It was finally done. We were able to transport the two dogs to the new house. It was a nightmarish experience.

I don't know how are your local dogs, but I know my parents' dogs. They are also local dogs that always lived outside, still when I had to take one of them to the vet, we had no problem convincing her to go for the ride. I took her in my arms (though she's quite heavy) and got into the car with no problems. I put her behind the driver's seat and she stayed there calmly until we got to the vet (a ride of about 70 kilometers). I'm glad you found a method to take them to your new place eventually. How are they now? Have they got used to the new environment?

Hi Inu! Yes, they have gotten used to the new place now because it is clean and nicer overall.

Ha ha ha! I imagine you trying to make him enter the cage! He was smart enough not to step inside the cage with all his four legs. He wanted to eat all your food first, clever dog! How did you put the cage up in the car? Wasn't he too heavy for you? How did they act when they got to the new location?

Hi Octav! The ride I hired came with two men. They had to carry the heavy cage of course.

Animals don't like change or to be moved do they. I remember when we moved from a one bedroomed flat to a four bedroomed house, both cats were indoor cats and never went out. Well we took them with us into our new home and left them to navigate themselves around and get used to their new home. Well about 4 hours later we couldn't find the youngest, Nikki, we were frantic with worry, we couldn't find him anywhere, we went out looking for him, even introduced ourselves to the new neighbours by asking if they had seen him and to look out for him. We were all set to design posters etc, when I happen to see out of the corner of my eye something move behind the television, well the crafty thing had found a hidey hole for himself and had snuggled up there and gone to sleep, he must have woken and moved! We were so damn relieved. I bet it was his way of getting his own back for moving him from his home.

They don't. But I think it is easier to move cats because they are smaller and they don't resist when you catch them. Dogs are entirely different.

That was a tough one, but at least you have transferred them already now. I remember when we had dogs and had to transfer them too, it was kind of hard but since the german shepherd was huge we had to get a van and had him stay there. it was difficult for larger dogs, but we had no problems transferring the shih tsu and the pug as we have just carried them in our hands and they love travelling in the car, they would even take a peek in the window. heheh

I agree. Bigger dogs are harder to transfer but I am glad that it's over now.

I can almost imagine the ordeal. It is hard to make them realize that they already have a new home. I wonder how are they faring about their new home now? I never had a dog before whenever we have to move, just now and I don't think we will be moving anytime soon.

Oh, I think they like it so much better in the new place. They had a bigger yard in the old location but the new one is a lot cleaner. I also love it a lot, lot better.

how are they now? Have they adjusted to the new house? Poor dogs, it must be so stressful for them too. Dogs are territorial special the males that's why they don't like to leave their territory.

I think they have gotten adjusted so quickly because I think they noticed that we were no longer living in the old house when we left them there for two days.

Hello Cutie18f this is checkmail and me too am fond of dogs but as have grown up can't play with them as used to.Oh and about your problem, if living in less traffic area can take on a mini trolly sledge to carry him, else just bring in an big cage according to the dogs size and keep them in open truck. for transportation.

Hi Checkmail! The dog cage was the final solution to the problem, but not without much prodding and tricking.
