Hubby says we need a new TV..

I am super-frustrated because our TV isn't really that old. I really hate that you spend so much money on something like a TV, but then you have to replace it every 5 years or so. We've probably had ours around that long.. about 5 years.. maybe a little less. I can't quite remember when we got it. I know we've had to change the bulb in it once. That was the whole reason we got this TV as the one before it had died just as quickly.. in about 5 years. With this one hubby said as long as we replace the bulb every couple of years it should last awhile. Now he says there's a motor in it that's dying.. he's seeing it at work. All the same style TV's that are about this age have a motor dying in them that costs $900 to fix! I don't really want to buy a new TV.. especially knowing it's only going to last probably about 5 years. They just don't make them like they used to! How old is your TV? How often do you replace your TV?

TV's have neither replaceable bulbs or motors and should last much longer than 5 years all the best, urban

I don´t have a TV at all, I haven´t had one for years. It doesn´t cost me a penny that way!

Well we used to have one, but I didn´t replace it when my lodger at the time broke it. I don´t miss it at all to be honest. My kids watch odd bits on youtube and my partner watched the odd film on the computer. Try it!

I could live without it, but nobody else could. The kids play their video games on it, hubby watches it to unwind or play video games. There are a few shows I like to see, and of course we watch movies regularly... at least one per weekend, if not more, especially when money is tight.

Hmm.. wonder if we could live without one? Probably not, LOL. Once you get used to having one around.. gets pretty boring without one.

I think my tvs are all roughly the same age.... they are all wall mounted HDs and still all work just fine. I would guess two of them are at least 4-5 years old since I think at least one of the older kids were still at home when we bought the first one. Prior to these tvs, we had one of those big projection cabinet tvs... like a 54 or 60 inch or something, you know, the ones that look like a big cube? That one was pretty old, I want to say maybe 12-15 or maybe even 20 years. We got it repaired once in order to avoid purchasing a new one but when it started going all 3D (the colors were going), it would have cost more to repair it again than to buy a new one. The old one we had in our master bedroom was also one of the old style big tvs that needed a big heavy entertainment center to hold it - that one started taking 5-10 minutes to warm up and turn on so that one had to be tossed too lol. That one was probably 10+ years old. We just got our daughter a flat screen for her room - well, we got it in Jan and finally mounted it yesterday I swear we are NOT project people.

Ours are used a lot too... we have the main one hooked up to the Wii, one in our bedroom, one in the area we use for a gym, and the new one in A's room. It might be wise to buy an extended warranty on your tv when you replace it, we usually buy the extended warranty on electronics (tvs, tablets, blu ray, stereo components) and it comes in handy.

We get them from where hubby works.. there's a 1 year warranty but that's it. It's cheaper for us to go through them than anywhere else.

We've had the television that we have right now for about three years. We'd probably still be using the television that we had before if it wasn't for the fact that Paul threw a temper tantrum about what was on television when he was younger and busted the screen on that television. I don't think that we are going to be replacing the television that we have right now any time in the near future. We tend to be the kind of people that will use something until it just doesn't work any more and then we will replace it.

But, wait! How big a TV are we talking about? I'm sure that for even half the cost to fix it, you could probably get some deals from Best Buy or Wal-Mart. Is it because you do a lot of gaming on your TV? I notice that the little TV that my son use to play his xbox is showing signs of being worn out. And it isn't even 2 years old!

We just bought our TV last year because we're just newly weds and still on the process of getting some stuff around our new house. This will be my first TV, but I think my husband had quite a few that has come and gone. He never actually change TV often, just when it starts to give him troubles. I actually don't mind having an older model of TV as long as it can play DVD players and stuff then I am fine with it. Our bedroom TV is an old CRT one. Hubby wants it replaced. I out my foot down because there's nothing wrong with it. He is now contemplating about putting it in the spare bedroom and buying an LED one in our bedroom. But until then, my answer is no.

Why spend money if you don't have to?

I know, right? He is stubborn like that. In fairness to him, he makes good money and he is also good in saving it. But when he thinks he wants something, he is stubborn. But when he stopped long enough to listen to me, he will realize that I am right and we don't really need anything. BUt then, he wouldn't listen until I get upset.

We have 3 televisions. Jeremy has one that is at least 7-8 years old. The sound is going out on that one. Lily has one that is probably at least a dozen years old and works just fine. The one in the living room is one I got from my brother when he moved halfway across the country. I have had it for 3.5 years and I know he had it for at least a year or 2 before handing it down to me. I was thinking of replacing Jeremy's with the one in the living room and getting a new one for in there, but I really don't want to spend the money.

The kids all have brand new TVs in their rooms which hubby got from work for free. They're smaller than the one in the living room.. but we're thinking to save the money, when our TV goes we'll take one of theirs. My daughter is usually grounded from watching TV anyway, and they aren't allowed to watch it on school days.

Our TV is now 10 years old and still working. I think Television, is not a necessity that required to buy because there are more important thing than TV. Much better to have a new computer than TV because computer have a lot more of used than TV... In my case, I don't really buy anything that is not really required for me to buy. If the TV is old than 20 years unless it will be okay. I don't mind about it...

My hubby brought a 55 inch flat screen LG brand, LCD TV back in December of 2011 so its still relatively new. It had better last alot longer then five years. We have never had to change the bulb in any of our TV's that we have had in the past 25 years. We have had alot of TV's since we had one in all the bedrooms and the living room through the years. They were the old fashion type Tv's. This 55 inch flat screen is the first flat screen he had but thankfully no problems so far. I have another flat screen that I brought myself back in 2007 and have only used it for three years. It is in one of our guest bedrooms not being used at this time at all, however in the three years of it being used I had no problems either. Maybe you got a lemon.

It's not a lemon.. it's just used a lot.. it's on almost 24/7 with 7 people living in the house.

Our TV is only 3 years old and perfectly working but since we do not have TV set in our bedroom my husband planning to buy a flat screen TV which I disagree because it's not part of our budget. By when he open up this topic to my father-in-law last week he gave him money for the TV set but I told him to buy next month after the renovation of our bedroom.

As for Television, I'm one of those who live without one. I do everything via the internet. There are many places online to watch television. if you go to sites like www.cnet.com, you can even get free software that lets you watch tv from around the world on your pc. so, when you asked how often do I replace TV, I think that it has been around 5 years since I even had one. I don't like television. The internet has everything I need on it.

We have a new tv here, only 6 months or so. my dad sent it to us from the usa. i would have never paid 500 dollars for a tv. But its a good one. So i understand what you are going through. maybe you can pick up a good used one somewhere.

Hubby works in a store that sells TVs so we can get a good deal on one.. he'd never go for buying a used one.

well until recently, we had Grundig tv that lasted as long as 12 years and guess what it still works ..but my dad thought it was too old and bought a brand new LG tv. I think as long as it is a branded product you do not have anything to worry about and it should expected to work for at least 10 years in my opinion.

I cant say that 5 years is long or short.. I think it depends on what brand or model of tv you buy. my tv in our home is almost 8years old and its our only 3rd TV, his brand is sony. I dont think if its have a defect yet, but I know that we can use it long more time..
