Is insurance worth it?

My friend asked me this, and I laughted at her. I said you would be completely stupid without it. Now if you caught without car insurance you can be charged, I am not sure about house insurance (when you own it), I know renting you don;t need it but it's recommended. She was telling me about this girl she knew, who owned her own house, and it burnt to the ground, now she walks off with nadda. Now my parents have always have house insurance, it's something like $550 a year (which I don't think is bad), depending what you want covered I believe they have a decent coverage. In college I rented and never had insurance, but then again I didn't have much value with me, I think the only thing worth wild was my laptop (which well lasts about a year if that - so no worries in my mind). I had clothes at home, and basically half items, so if a house fire, or theft it would be very little. Now if I were to leave now and rent I would get it. When I own I will have full coverage insurance, something may not happen for years, but that's when you may need it. My parents have paid 30 years into insurance and never had to use it, but they said better safe than sorry. I hear this all the time where people say it's a waste of money. Well they are the ones walking out of a house fire with nothing, then trying to get people to give them things and feel sorry for them (not paying insurance). Now if my parents place burnt to the ground 95% of the items would be covered seeing as their policy covers the damage to the house, and belonging inside, so this means valuable laptops, clothes everything.

ANother aspect to consider is that with homeowners insurance, if there is an accident on the property it can usually be covered with the insurance and you will not have to pay as much out of pocket. WE have homeowners insurance, and we had a pipe burst, $2000 in repairs, $700 in clean up due to the flooding, and $3000 in loss of property, along with $750 to re-drywall the bottom foot of the finished part of the basement. We paid our deductible. This was 3 years into having our house, we would have had to pay out of pocket for all of it had we not had insurance.

That liability umbrella is required by law for some property. I need it on my farm ground.

I know that this sounds bad, I only know that it is in our policy, but not exactly what it covers.

Some do and some don't you have to really look into it. The older the house is here the less they cover. I know my parents got a letter state what the company refuses to cover as their house ages.

As far as car insurance goes here in the US, it is actually illegal to operate a motor vehicle that is not insured. So of course it is worth having car insurance, we might never get in an accident in our lives that will require us to use our car insurance, but we might get a ticket for another reason and it would really stink to get an additional fine. As far as homeowners insurance, that is required as well while you have a mortgage on your home. It really isn't that expensive though and though I don't think I will ever have to use it, there are things that do happen at times during our lives that we have no control over at all.

Some places you don't require insurance, here it's very similar. I would always have insurance so I knew I was safe in that department. I've know a few people who didn't even apartment insurance and walked out with nothing.

Homeowners insurance is a must in my eyes. I've had to do claims from hail damage and storms that threw trees around and damaged the roof on the garage. As with owning a home you need to take care of it and look at homeowners insurance as another cost of maintaining it. Renters insurance is a different animal. I'm with you while in college I didn't have it because really had nothing of value, if were to rent now though, I would have it because the value of my possessions has increased. I think any insurance is a necessity anymore. I just look at it as if I had to replace everything I owned at this moment I know I'd be broke for years.

You really have to look into it, as many plans wont cover that. I know my parents got a letter saying it wont cover a lot of things such as hail, tsaumi.

I have insurance for some things, but I don`t have my house insured. My house is made of brick and concrete and every electrical thing is well insulated so it is very difficult for it to burn. I am not interested in having insurance agsainst robbery as I don`t have many things that would be of interest to thieves. I have a partial car insurance, but it insures a third party, but not my car. The thing is, my car is so old that it`s not worth it.

Here places can burn to the ground, crime has gone up. I would rather pay the $500 a year, and have the coverage, and not suffer if something happens.

I think it is, because many times even if you only need the insurance once every 5 years. Its cheaper than if you didnt have it. So get it.....

You are absolutely right. Many places require insurance, for example if you have a mortgage.

It is, because in the end not everyone will get everything handed to them. You make fork out the money for many years, but it will flow through that money in no time with 1 incident.
