My food pantry experience...

Today I went to a local food pantry where you have to be low income and live nearby. As I was standing in line outside the door I watched as people driving nice new cars got in the line. They were dressed in clothes that I would give my right arm for. Nice boots and gorgeous coats...one lady had a beautiful floor length fur coat on! You could tell it was expensive. They obviously get their hair done at a beauty salon....something I wish I could afford! There are very few people who look like they need food and were walking! I don't think it's fair for people who obviously don't need it to get food at a food pantry. What do you think? Do you take advantage of a local food pantry? Do you show up looking like a million dollars and driving a new car?

I don't go to a food pantry but I doubt if I'd care one way or the other. I would only be there for one person...me.
When I went to apply for food stamps I had on very nice clothes, nice boots, and I was driving my daughters brand new car. I don't own a car....but I do buy my clothes at the thrift store and can get some pretty pricey items for not much money. And I used to cut my own hair all the time and many times people asked me where I got it done.
So, I think maybe you're judging unfairly because you really don't know these people or where they come from. I try not to let things like that bother me....too many more important issues to bothered by.

Everything seems to bother me these days! Today I saw a lady come in with a baby and she obviously needs help but because she doesn't live in the area they told her she had to go to a differnt church food pantry. The weather isn't very nice right now and I couldn't see them turning her away like that and make her take that baby and go somewhere else. I felt so bad for her.

THAT is absolutely a horrible story and from a church no doubt. I thought church's were suppose to help people in need...yeh, right. That's disgusting and I probably would have opened my mouth and said something....poor thing. Now THAT is something to really be bothered about.
You need to stop being bothered by things so much...it's going to cause all sorts or problems inside you and we don't want that now do we?

I do hope they check up on those who get in line. If I were in a food line, I would try to look as nice as I could. I mean even if I were poor,I would not come looking like a dog's breakfast, because that is who I am. However I have no idea whether those people who looked rich were not really rich but were just relegated to their cars and their nice clothes. If they were fabulously wealthy, they should not be there and if they had just lost their businesses, they could have sold their cars and their fancy clothes, did their own hair instead and then they would not have gone to that food pantry.
If however, some of them was getting food to take to poor families, well that would be different. And would that not be that they would take some of those poor families along in the car with them?

i so know what you mean. i have been on the giving end and the receiving end of a food pantry so i have seen it from both sides.
i remember when i worked at a place where we gave out food hampers, gifts, clothes, etc to the poor and most of them were better dressed than me. like you said, there were people there in furs and with diamonds on there fingers.
same with when hubby was out of work for a year and we had to have a little help. i said that i bet most of these people live better and have more money than we do! hubby was out of work so we had very little money and only work part time due to health issues.

I think that this is complete bull crap but the world is filled with people that just take advantage of the system and I get pretty sick of them being the ones living comfortably without doing any work. It's like people that make more money on unemployment then people that are working multiple jobs and trying as hard as possible to provide for themselves and their families.
People's possessions and what they spend their money on should definitely be factored in to low income help such as the food pantry or unemployment. People that aren't even trying to change their situation should not be rewarded for doing nothing while other people are struggling but still working as hard as they possibly can. How much longer will this country let people live comfortably doing nothing while hard workers continually get screwed.

There should be a social worker there to sort out the rich and famous! I totally agree with you. I`m sure that those people should get food at low prices in order to save their wealth for a BMW. I don`t clearly know what a food pantry is, but I bet that the reason why those foods are lower prices are because someone else is paying for them.

I used to see that all the time in las vegas usa. I knew people who worked with me at a casino, made 15.00 per hour and then had to go to food banks for food. it was because the gambled all their money away. very sad. Glad you are not like that. Good luck there.

I would be so happy to have a job that paid me half of that! There ARE people who take advantage of free stuff and aren't realizing they are taking food from someone who desperately needs it. When I'm having a good month I don't go to the food pantry and I usually give away a lot of the food items I get when I go there.
