Golden Girls

Even though it's long over, and all but one cast member deceased, I still like to watch Golden Girls reruns. It was one of the first comedies to cover the aging female Baby Boomer population, I think. Each episode covered some interesting aspect of their lives, from tame topics like visiting children, grandchildren, friends and an always broke ex-husband, to more volatile issues including political campaigns, lesbians and artificial insemination. They even fit in Elvis impersonators, naughty, nice and outright rude neighbors. Nobody could write about the Golden Girls and fail to mention Estelle Getty's hilarious aging mother bits playing off Bea Arthur's role, and Betty White's senseless St. Olaf stories and Rue McClanahan's eternal seductions. I like the way they ended it, with Dorothy finally getting married, her ex-husband Stan hijacking her bridal limo and the several goodbyes with the girls back at the house. Golden Girls still keeps me in stitches when I need a good laugh!

Yes, Golden Girls is a great show. I have started watching it again. I quit because it was something a good friend and I used to watch together. We had a falling out so it bothered me to watch it. Now, the friendship is ended finally and so I can watch it again. Betty White was alittle too dumb for me but I enjoyed it anyway. I Like Rhu's character so much. I was watching the one where her sister comes to town recently and laughed and laughed. I have severe depression so watching these are great for a good laugh and a bit of a mood lift.

Nice to meet you, celtic! Golden Girls lifts us above our cares of the day. Just picture them all in golden parachutes, landing like Bridget Jones, but in Miami, with Estelle Getty clutching her straw purse, Betty aiming for the cows, Rue in her kitten heels conspiring to seduce an EMS guy and Dorothy wondering if she'd live to give an English lit test the next day. That would have been a great laugh!

Sadly only Betty White is still alive out of the four of them.

Yes, Betty White is certainly making a name for herself moreso these days, trading on her Golden Girls and previous Mary Tyler Moore Show successes. She certainly deserves every bit of recognition she gets. A grand dame indeed.

I absolute loved the Golden Girls, still do, we in fact watched a couple of episodes from the 4th series the other night, my mum and I. I have the first five series in my collection. Isn't it sad that all but one of the Golden Girls are no longer with us! That used to be my therapy when I was down I would put a few episodes on and it would guarantee to have tears running down my face. Some of the quotes and references to famous people I don't understand, not being American, but regardless it was wonderful. They did a follow up Golden Palace when Bea Arthur left but it wasn't such a success as Golden Girls was, I guess Bea Arthur was the centrepoint. Picture this, Sicily, 1921... Classic. Estelle Getty was actually made up to be old believe it or not and I think she was the youngest of the four. They had wonderful bit parts for some of the actors not so well known at the time including a cameo role by George Clooney. Poor old Rose they really took the mockery out of her, but her St.Olaf's stories are classic and memorable and that rooster Bessie who could play the piano she thought that Sophia's sister had cooked it for dinner!

Hey wolfs! Isn't it amazing how some shows like the Golden Girls catch onto an international audience and maintain their classic appeal long after shooting wraps? I enjoyed Bea Arthur in maude, but moreso in Golden Girls. The episode where a lottery ticket got stuffed inside a leather jacket that was then sold at a fundraiser auction was hilarious! And I can't remember the name right now, but the spinoff featuring the neighbor who was a doctor was pretty cool, too.

I love that show. I watch it all the time, even though I was a kid/early teen when it first came out. My mom and I used to watch it together. It was our "girl time." As I got older, the Girls helped me to decompress from studying, deal with illness, and survive hospitalizations and surgeries that would break me at the time. It's weird to have gratitude to a TV show, but I truly do.

Hey cripfemme, nice to meet you. Thanks for joining in this discussion on the Golden Girls. It's great that you and your mom bonded over Golden Girls and that the show was such a powerful support mechanism for you during your times of trial. A friend and I used to talk on the phone during episodes, watching it together over the miles helped us feel closer when we were both lonely.

I was a fun show to watch. They actually were older than the official definition of the Baby Boomer generation. Betty White is 90 now I think and still going strong. And 90 puts her at about or at least 20 years older than the early Baby Boomers.

I haven`t seen reruns of the Golden Girls, but I saw them always when thy were on. They were funny, witty and moving as life often is. I am so sorry I don`t see such shows anymore on TV. The Golden Girls was awesome and the actresses are/were great ladies.
