I have been involved with getting my older sister a new primary care physician and taking care of an issue that has been going on for about two years. Long story short: I took her for an angiogram and a heart catheter procedure yesterday. She is in bad enough shape we have to try again. I know one more reason why I want to be sure to avoid becoming diabetic and why I am glad I have never smoked. So guys, when I am not showing up much, chances are I am at some medical procedure with her or with my husband.

She is so lucky to have you there! Are these congenital conditions, or due to smoking/being diabetic? I wouldn't stress too much about yourself, unless something shows up while you are taking care of your own health. I hope that everything works out well!

Her conditions are due to smoking, which she denies, and being diabetic, and how she has eaten for years and the fact that she does not get out of her recliner for even an hour a day. I have been monitoring my blood sugars occasionally for about a year and a half. I can definitely see a correlation in how they read when I exercise regularly. I have never smoked and I eat pretty healthily, just too large a portion.Whenever I give platelets or blood they check my iron, blood pressure, pulse. Of course the condition of my platelets is good and that would be something to worry about otherwise.

According to one diabetic educator I have been trained by in my jobs, the best thing you can do is build muscle. . . as in weight training. That is so that the excess sugar you might have has a place to go besides your pancreas. Good luck. Of course the definitive test is an A1C that they do with a physical only if there is reason to believe you may be diabetic. It shows a three month cumulative picture of your sugars. I do not understand it completely, and I have never had one.

I smoked for 22 years, but quit for good about 4 or 5 years ago. The last time I had my blood sugar tested in 2010, I was borderline diabetic. Having diabetes AND multiple sclerosis was too much-I've been watching what I eat, and doing my best to get some sort of exercise each day. I do know that the last time I had my blood drawn for something else, I did ask about my blood sugar level; the doctor said it was fine. But I know that I have to be more conscious about it-diabetes type 2 runs in our family (my maternal great-grandfather, my mother AND my sister were all diagnosed with it).

It must be miserable to watch her suffer. I read below that she's not good at taking care of herself and that's frustrating. Diabetes is a horrible disease and so much of it is avoidable, I watch what I eat, too, and try to get enough movement to stay healthy. I hope your sister improves so that she can enjoy life and relieve you of some stress.

It's not always avoidable. My younger sister was diagnosed around 32 years of age, but Type 2 runs in our family. She'll be 40 this year, but she was never excessively overweight. I do agree-we all need to eat better and get some exercise. I have multiple sclerosis, and have been much more conscious of my health since I was about 35 or 36.

I know diabetes isn't always avoidable but I'm doing my best to avoid it! Luckily, there is no history of it in our family.
I have a sister in law who has COPD which she denies she has. She won't take care of herself and I don't know how she's lived as long as she has. She's a sweet lady and I love her, she just sees things however she wants to see them.

I hope everything goes alright for your sister, she is very lucky to have you. I only have to look at my father and realize how lucky I am, compared to him, I don't smoke or drink and I take plenty of exercise and I am careful with what I eat. It's a wonder he hasn't got diabetes the way he abuses his body. He has COPD, which apparently is incurable and all he does is cough and spit all day, it's disgusting but it send the message across, plain and simple!

Diabetes is a bad thing to have. I am really careful with mine but it already affected my eye site. I am glad the eye doctor just told me I can have surgery that will correct my problem and I am looking forward to that. Luckily that is all that has been affected so far but I think because I work out at least 5 days a week it really helps me. The cholesterol did go up slightly this last doctors visit, I was not happy about that, but I know that is just telling me that I need to change things and I will make the necessary adjustments. I hope your sister is OK.

You do a lot of positive things in your life and I know that it helps you manage your diabetes successfully. I like to think I would be that determined myself. I am glad you can get the vision problems corrected.

Me too. I am probably the only one that would go to an eye doctor hoping he would tell me I needed to have surgery. When I first got the cataract he told me it was not serious enough to have surgery, and I was like, "
But it is serious enough that I can't see very well." I mean it is bad that it progressed, but now I can get it fixed and I am told it will make a huge difference.

Oh, I wonder if you know today is mylot quadruple earning day.It is kind of you to take care of your older sister.Where are her son and daughter ? Maybe the trouble with her heart is one of the complications following diabetes. My older sister also suffers from diabetes. She never smokes. The doctor linked it to her insomnia. She only sleeps for one or two hours a night.

My sister lives with one daughter, but she has some other things that she has to do that make it better for me to do a lot of this. Her other daughter lives far away. I did get on for some of the quadruple earnings. Yes, this can be caused in part by diabetes and also by a sedentary life style and poor food choices.

I know it is about self care. At this point my brother, sister, dad, and two nieces are being treated for diabetes. I am working on keeping it away. Exercise certainly helps along with healthy diet.

Type II diabetes is a lifestyle disease. You may have a tendency toward it, but it comes from various stresses we put on our body and bad foods as well. There is a lot of evidence that diet pop causes it. Being overweight just a little can cause it, and I am majorly overweight. Being active is one way to keep it in check though.

Oh no, I hope your sister is okay. and you are very wise to not have smoked and you avoid diabetes. I try to avoid diabetes too, since both my sister and mom had it, but it's hard. Plus I did smoke for over 25 years, and though it's been over 10 years since I smoked, I heard that it can still come back at me.

Some of the damage is permanent, but a lot of it can be undone by a healthy lifestyle. I know you are particular about what you eat and that goes a long way to help. Stress however can cause a problem.

Ah, but I am taking a stress management class this semester, though I really am not much of a stressful person, until I read my Sociology assignments... No, really, that sociology really does stress me out, but you know what I did on my spring break this week, don't you? I did next week's assignment already for that class.. So I am one HAPPY student...

Somewhere in all of this also comes work. I already have forty hours in, and when I clock out in less than an hour I will have almost fifty, then I am working sixteen hours tomorrow and nine again on Sunday. Monday I am off, but have a meeting at work and a Dr. appointment with my husband.

I do hope things will get better for her and that she gets sorted fast to get the treatment that she needs.
I smoke and I will say that I have tried loads of times to give up and have not managed it, also know all the damage that smoking has done to me and that the damage it has done is not going to get better even if I gave up.

I think she believes that as well. But if they clear out this artery and/or do a bypass, smoking will cause it to block up again. I do hope that some of these procedures help with her pain.

This comment is aimed at jugsjugs. If you do quit smoking your lungs will start clearing up almost immediately. If you KEEP QUIT you can actually reverse the damage that you have already started. Check it out if you don't believe me.

She has been going to a free clinic an hour away. This has got to be better. This doctor is the one that got her in to see a cardiologist in less than a month. The clinic had been trying since August. I really like the new doctor.

Well, they did an heart catheter procedure on me when I was having the chest pains and that is when they found everything OK and it was fibromyalga causing all the pain like I was suspecting I had. But had to be on the safe side since my mom had a pacemaker and was diabetic. I will keep your sister in prayer.

Thank you, Tina, yes, you needed to be certain because of family history. I had a friend have to have a catheter procedure and an ablation due to a rapid heart rhythm and she was quite young at the time. I hope you continue to improve.

Your sister is very lucky to have you take the added effort for her, especially with your own life and husband to care for. Hope all goes well with her.
It's seeing their problems that make us thankful or opens our eyes to taking better care of ourselves. My mother is diabetic, high blood pressure, cholesterol...you get the picture, yet she won't take care of herself. All of us kids now that we are in our 40's are looking at this and taking strives for healthier life styles. It's hard to see others that won't do it for themselves.
You're a strong one.

Your description of your mother matches my sister. I wish I could choose better for her, but I cannot. My brother has never smoked, but due to stress and a sedentary job has the blood pressure, weight and diabetes issues as well. I need to get serious about losing weight and exercising more.
