Some people wonder why I didn't go to India on my trip around the world. I was aged 20 to 21 years old and I was in the years of being newbie traveler. I was visiting places suitable for someone with limited traveling experience like California and Singapore. The bulk of my trip was spent working in Australia. I was so happy I had a working holiday visa. Now I am aged 40 years old for the last few years I have been a very experienced traveler. I have visited South America and I wouldn't have wanted to do that at 20 years old. In 2011 I went on a trip to Colombia which was fantastic. Then in 2012 I managed to visit Argentina, Chile, Brazil and Uruguay. I hope to visit India, the Philippines, Madagascar, Peru and Ecuador but I can't afford to see them all at the current time. This year I am revisiting Eastern Europe to see countries like Ukraine and Moldova which I haven't yet visited. Which places do you suggest for a newbie traveler? How about for a more experienced traveler?

Hi Maria. Thanks for saying that I did a great job visiting all the places. My next trip is planned for May and June 2013. We will be leaving 3 days after my son's birthday. He is going to become 6 years old.

When we were traveling, we first went to the places near where we lived. So I used to live in Vancouver, so we went to Victoria and Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. We used to go to Washington State and later to Oregon. So the best thing for a newbie is to visit the state or province close to where they live and if they live in a small country, to the neighboring country.

Thanks for your wonderful suggestion for a newbie to visit a neighboring country. In 2010 I took my children to Vancouver Island and did visit the places that you did mention. It was annoying not be able to pop down to Seattle for my birthday. One year I will have to have my birthday in America. It is American Independence Day you see.

That does sound exciting. I really loved going to Washington State when I was young. We would go to Bellingham because we had a greater selection of goods there. We even went there on our honeymoon as well as to Vancouver Island and we also went to Seattle. What struck me was there were so many taverns. We must have gone to a bad area.

Now that is a difficult one, based on my own experience, the first country I went to was Cyprus, now Cyprus I would definitely say is a suitable place for a newbie traveller, they speak English, they drive on the same side of the road as the UK, not so good if you are from other countries however. And it's easy to get around, there's plenty of things to see and do. I also think Amsterdam is a great place for a newbie traveller too, I have never been outside my own continent, that I would leave for more experienced travellers! And there's Prague of course.

Hi Wolfie. I would like to visit Cyprus in the future. I am glad that you found it ideal when you were a newbie traveler. I believe for any European traveler Amsterdam is a wonderful place for a short break or a weekend away. I liked seeing Anne Frank's House, seeing the Dutch architecture and riding on a ferry down the canals. Delft is a lovely place for a day out from there and it is possible to see the famous pottery. I am looking forward to having a day of sightseeing in lovely Prague. Then I will have another night on the a train.

To start traveling and getting some experience in that field, I assume, the best thing will be to start discovering your own country. Especially if you live in huge countries like USA or Canada. Then, next step should be traveling to some countries that have similar culture and speak same language. It's also important to explore different modes of traveling, like traveling alone, in group or as couple, different transportation means, staying in different types of accommodation etc... Another important thing is to learn what's should be major points of interest. Is it culture, history, art, nature, parties and meeting people or something else of personal choice. Of course, important issue is safety during traveling. It's easier for man than woman to travel alone, but still I met a lot of single female travelers of all ages on my trips (recently I come back from South Africa, and met there truly inspirational lady from US, she is 70 and still traveling alone and staying in backpackers). Once, when new traveler get some experience, and know what is the focus of the traveling, then next steps should be travels to some safer areas like Europe, or Australia and such places, and eventually places like Africa, Asia and Latin America. However, important thing is to plan travels ahead, gather relevant information and be ready to alter those planes once come to destination, because insisting on fixed plans could be reason for frustrations as well as missing opportunities of experiencing the places we are visiting.

Thanks for your very detailed and excellent response to my discussion. I am delighted to hear about the truly inspirational 70 year old lady that came from the USA. It is lovely she is still staying at backpackers and traveling all on her own. Sometimes a flight can be booked in advance and then trouble can flair up like a hurricane or political problems. We felt a bit worried going to Argentina and in a town we saw an art gallery with war paintings. My home country had a war against Argentina over the Falkland Islands.

Wow! It's great to know you're also planning to visit the Philippines soon. I am sure you get to know good places that you can see in our country. I love nature and so I love the tourist spots that we have since we have 7,107 islands :) I only get to visit few neighboring Asia countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Macau, Hong Kong and Beijing. I will be scheduling a trip to Thailand or Indonesia before the year ends. Hoping to visit Japan and Korea as well. I am just a newbie in backpacking and loves to travel alone. For now, I can only suggest those places that I have visited :) You might want to check this link http://philippinetouristspots.net/ so you can be "motivated" to check the Philippines after your Eastern Europe tour :) Safe trip always!

Thanks for your superb response to my discussion Paper Dolls. I see that you are a newbie that adores traveling alone. Good luck planning and going on your trip to Thailand or Indonesia later this year. Thanks for giving me this link. I wish all your trips will be safe.

I will take lots of photos and learn how to share them on fantastic My Lot. I know the cost of living keeps rising. You could be an arm chair traveling perhaps due to this costing very little.

I think that Australia, New Zealand, the US and Canada would be good places for a newbie because you wouldn't have to worry about language problems. You would be able to talk to drivers and the staff at hotels without problems and you would be able to read the menu if you visit a restaurant. I have often been in situations were I didn't speak the local language, and that was a challenge sometimes. If you have no travel experience I think that it be a good idea to pick a country where you already speak the language. I think that some of the countries in Central Africa would be suitable for an experienced traveller but not suitable for a newbie or a person who visits Africa for the first time.

Thanks for your excellent response to my discussion my friend. I totally agree Africa wouldn't be at all suitable for a newbie traveler. He or she would have a massive culture shock. I was staying in Cape Town and a French traveler was having a language barrier problem. He didn't speak any English. Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA are well set up for newbies. South Africa is better when the person learns of the backpackers bus.

I think it is easier for a newbie to visit a country where thay have similar culture as the one you have and better still if they speak the same language. It is not obvious that everyone of us will know how to react in very different surroundings. An experienced traveler knows what to expect of his trip and will chose wisely. You know that I have wanted to go to Machu Picchu for a long time, but I don`t know if it is wise now that I am ill.

Thanks for your excellent response my dear friend. I am sorry that you are so ill. I really loved visiting you last year. Due to having Leo I have similar feelings to you about Machu Picchu. I know it is high in the mountains and traveling all the way up there could be quite tough.

I totally agree with you on those places for newbie travelers. The places should be tourist friendly, no language barrier and easy to commute around. As you mentioned Singapore and California. I too started with Singapore, Hong Kong and Australia. For more complicated ones, I will normally follow tour and did some free and easy in between to cover the places of my interest.

I think that new travelers are more comfortable and less stressed when they visit places that are well traveled by others. It can often be a first experience and it should be enjoyed. Experienced travelers can venture further and new sites will often intrigue them to follow.

Thanks for your wonderful response to my discussion. Many countries in Africa are suitable only for experienced travelers. To visit everyone of those many visas would be necessary.

Yeah, that's true. I've only been to some countries so far, so I'm not a really experienced traveler, and I haven't even traveled to abroad alone/without my family. In the first round, I would choose nice and safe countries, which may not hold that much of shocking experiences, but which I feel safe in. Like the US, European countries, Japan.

Yes, with experienced traveller, you might want to visit many other unusual places. Keep traveling, and I'd love to see some of your share of your photos around the world. I really hope I can go around the world like you. It'll be very nice and a good experience to have. Maybe for a newbie traveler, it's good to visit some other place like Singapore, Australia, Japan. And for experienced traveler, they can visit much more unusual places.

Visiting unusual places can be delightful. I like to get off the beaten track sometimes and there I typically find lower prices. I wonder about having a language barrier problem in Japan. I loved visiting Colombia in 2011 before it becomes very popular. Direct airline routes can make a place more popular.
