How Important Is It For You To Memorize Certain Bible Verses?

March 7, 2013 11:17pm CST
Do you find it important to memorize bible verses? How important is it for you to seriously memorize? To me, it's as important as my day-to-day existence. I take God at His Word. I want to be always ready with a bible verse if a certain situation arises that I need to bring in a bible verse suitable for such circumstance. Like for example, when praying for something extra-ordinary and I need a miracle, I need to believe that with God nothing is impossible and that Mark 11:24 says that when you pray believe that you have received it and it will be yours. The Word of God is powerful and when we learn to constantly declare and claim His wonderful promises in our lives through His Word, things will change and will certainly get better each day.

You are right. Some years ago, I also memorized several passages of the Bible. But, with the time I forgot them again because I didn't continue practising. Several month, ago I started to read the Bible again. His word gives us strength and hope. I really think about retaking the habit to memorize again important parts of this precious scripture. Thanks for your discussion.

I agree GOD's words give us strength and hope. I am familiar with a few Bible verse but I cannot say that memorize them word for word, nevertheless I think it's my fault because when it comes to Bible verses it should not be just memorized by the mind but by heart as well, also understanding the real meaning of the verse is more important than simply memorizing it.

For me, you don't need to memorize the verses. Just read it with deep understanding. I believe that reading the bible is not an easy task especially to memorize the verses. But as long that the holy spirit will guide you, you will a better understanding of the readings in the bible.

I have memorized verses, but hardly ever make it a point to do so any more. Usually, a verse will come to mind when I need it, whether I've memorized it word for word or not. It's good to know them, though!

Memorizing verses? That is very important to me. It is my way of being reminded of God's commandment and promises. When we hide the Word of God in our heart, it helps us avoid sin during temptations and it also helps us to be encouraged and strengthened during times of trials. Actually, I don't just memorize verses, I memorize chapters or group verses in a chapter. I always make it a point to spend time reading and memorizing verses of the Bible so that I won't depart from the will of God.

Very important. Especially on the Bible verses that deals with the laws and commandments of God. Psalms 119:11 states, "Your word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against you".

For me, i just read the Bible and believing what's in it heartily... when i read it, i reflect on it ... asking myself what have i learned... Memorizing some verses will help you as well in a way that keeping records instantly in your mind. For an instance, if you would like to share some quotes or reminders to others you can just say what Chapter and verses they are and not just by telling it without any basis.

Indeed it is truly important to memorize the Word of God since it is the food to our soul. It gives us the hope on living everyday especially in a world were there is struggle and difficulty. We do need to memorize the Word of God or verses to also include it in our prayers and it is like a pill of our soul especially if we do need healing and deliverance. Its not that easy to do if we get to memorize a lot of verses, one verse at a time is okay since the enemy is also busy to keep us away from praying and meditating on the Word of God but as children of God, it is our duty to keep the Word of God and share it to those who are in need and are lost. God's word will last forever and it is really important that we use it everyday with faith as we claim the promises of God, praise God!

Welcome to MyLot. Many people benefit from this as it helps them keep their minds centred upon God, within their realm of belief about God, throughout their daily lives. To me, it is more important to go for understanding on what is being said than trying to break one's head over memorizing as much as possible. If it helps you, then that's good. Please try to pray for the things of heaven & not the mundane material things.

I don't memorize bible verse,I just remember an important part and successfully. I also remember what moved me. I am not a preacher and I have no right to preach so I just keep it in myself and if I need them I research the verse. I hope God understands LOL

during the old testament, hebrew children always had a memory verse, Deut. 6:4 "Hear, O Israel: the LORD out God, the LORD is one." (ESV). this is their reminder that they only have one God. In our present time, it's really nice to memorize certain verses as a way to claim God's promise to us, though I would also suggest to understand what the verse is actually saying, by having a quick history check why the verse was spoken. this also strengthens our faith with God and protects us against the enemy's attack.
