How do you know what to cook?

Have you ever thought about this? l cook a lot of the things my Mother cooked, and also things my family loved. I do collect recipies that catch my attention, but I often just look at what is left over and what I can add to it and create my own dish.
I do try to balance a meal, meat, vegies and pasta but will often just throw it all together in one dish and serve.

I tend to cook whatever I fancy, I am fussy, but healthy eater, because I go to the gym, I need to eat a lot of carbs before going and a lot of protein afterwards which is easy as I love omelettes, I am not a patient person when it comes to food so I usually like to make dishes which are quick to prepare. I love salads especially in the Summer and they have all the vitamins and goodness I need. Sometimes your body has a way of telling you what kind of food it needs.

I take into consideration what the people I am cooking for want or will eat. I have to make menus and cook for the people I support, and I also cook what my family members like. I tend to like almost anything. I like to use up leftovers, and sometimes my clients, at least one of them, will sneak in and eat what I was planning on serving on another meal. I look in the refrigerator and the freezer to see what is on the menu.

They say that cooking is also a skill that a great cook can invent a recipe just one look at their ingredients. I often have left overs normally the food I cooked for lunch all the way to dinner and if something is left I just reheat it some other day or I just repair it.

I use leftovers in all sorts of creative ways. I have learned to do this as I live alone. I suppose that if I did not recieve guests, I would cook for myself and would not have much leftovers. But I am always having friends or family and that means a different way of cooking. I don`t plan much, except when I invite for a diner.

If I still have extra budget, I would normally go to market to buy something my husband would love. But when I don't have, I would just cook whatever we have at home.

I do that often, just look at what I have and throw it all together with some spices or flavorings. My grandpa was never picky whether he had a casserole or a meal with separate dishes because he said it all went to the same place and got mixed up anyway!
Right now I am mostly using up what I have in my cupboards and freezer. I've been doing this for a couple of weeks now because my stores are getting old and I don't want them to go to waste. I never realized how many things you can make from canned meat, pasta, vegetables, scraps saved from other meals and the like!

It just come naturally without much thought on my part. I always have many idea what to cook for my meal and my friends. It is some kind of inherent talent i find it intriguing and second to none among some of the skills i have possessed. I can't explain that with a logical answer.

My kids eat different meal then I do. I don't cook like my mother because we don't do fried food or beef. Rarely pork, kids aren't fond of it.
I mainly create our own dishes. We are lower in sodium so tend to use more herbs over salt. It took a bit but kids are used to it now. I'd rather have flavor over heavy salted foods.
I've thrown it all together before and hoped for the best. When something comes out of the oven in the roaster my oldest often asks what's in there or are we going to be surprised?

I can't cook yet, just some basic dishes. It seems a bit scary to me, to learn all those dishes, and to decide what to cook. There are so many foods, and it's gonna be hard to decide what to make, and when, and what my boyfriend would desire, or what is easy enough to make on a busy night...

I learned to cook many of the things that I feed to my family because of the things that my mother fed to my siblings and myself when we were growing up. However, that is not something that is true of all of the dishes that I serve to my family. In addition to those dishes that I learned from my mother, there are some dishes that I've learned to cook from my friends and there is an endless supply of inspiration on the internet and I do use recipe websites on a pretty regular basis.

I love recipes too, have tons of them, but like you I can put together a dish by looking in my pantry when the idea occurs.
