I'm not a good egg cracker

I think I am not good at breaking eggs partly because I am breaking them on the edge of a cup and there is very little room for error. I fear that if I hit too hard, the egg will split open too much and I will have egg white running down the outside of the cup and making a mess on the counter top. Therefore I am tentative in hitting the egg against the cup. The worst cases occur when the shell is thin and weak but the membrane inside the shell is thick and tough. Then I have egg shell crumbling all over the place while I am trying to push a hole through the membrane with my finger. I use a cup because I am breaking just two eggs which I mix with a fork to be used in making scrambled eggs. I can fit a cup into the dishwasher much easier than a bowl without taking up space I need for other things.

I can understand that. I also break into a cup. Now the roomie likes to break into a clear bowl so she can more easily see any shell - remembering her vision is very limited.
A way to maybe help with your dilemma... hold the egg cupped in your palm and use the fork you are going to mix them with to strike the egg shell...
