Roger Ebert, famous film critic said that video games can never be art. He stated that obvious difference between art and games is that you can win the game. That the games have rules, points, objectives, and an outcome. He said that story, a novel, a play, dance, or a film you cannot win. You can only experience them.
What do you think about it?
I think games can be similar to movies. You experience them by playing. While some movies are certainly art, I could never said it about Meet the Spartans or Love Guru for example. It's the same with video games.

I'm not sure if he meant developing games or playing, but it sounds like he means playing them. Clearly developing games requires a TON of art. The graphical art is very high.
Onto playing games as an art. People can define a game how they want to. Games take skill, and skill requiring things are often considered arts. Many games may not be considered an art, but some may. Puzzle type games can require a certain skill and method that could be called artistic. Many games you cannot win either, so that would be an easy counter argument to his statement.
Also, just because one man says something, does not make it true. Many people believed that the internet would be impossible to create, but it was made, and look at it now.

While I respect Mr. Ebert on many subjects, on this I have to disagree. Believe me, I just did my first game environment in Maya. You must be skilled in color, lighting and composition. I have watched many cut scene films on Youtube (search for video game cutscene movies), and I can tell you that games are art. I am studying coding, and I will tell you, that I believe that programmers are artists. Mr. Ebert just has not had the experience of creating an environment in Maya, or other 3D art program. Games are art. Watching the latest Hitman film, Max Payne or batman as a cutscene film, only shows you how fantastic these artists are. the cutscenes themselves, nowadays, are full movies. Video games are art, high art.

Videogames are not only an art but also engineer programming yea . It's really not easy to make a video games nowadays with lots of expectation on graphics also . I think we should really give videogame maker the name of an artist yea.
