They're trying to be familiar with it sensing if there's any danger before laying themselves to sleep. It's like smelling if it already belongs to somebody else's. Like when they mark their territory they try to smell it if a previous dog had peed on it.
It's their nature.

I think that dogs would sometime run after their tails thinking that is is another dog or creature! I've seen our dogs do the same.

It is because, in the wild, dogs (or wolves, their ancestors) would find a dry grassy or leafy place to sleep and would make a 'nest' by turning round several times to flatten the grass or leaves and arrange them to be more comfortable.

Owlwings reply is bang on..inherent traits, tromping down the bed, whilst checking the direction of the prevaling winds, finally resting in the position of nose in direction of the wind, so they will catch the scent of Possible predators in the wind/breeze!

To be very honest with you..."the more I get to know my dog, the less I like people!"
I am sorry, I do not teach tricks to dogs...I like to learn from them, and how they handle situations!
My dog...even tho' I put his supper bowl, down, then I make my supper. He will NOT eat, until I am eating...then he happily devours his supper. I did not treat him to do this...just good manners, I guess...LOL!

Owlings is correct. It is a leftover instinct that dogs have from being in the wild. They used to go in a circle to press down grass or weeds before lying down.

In my own opinion, I think they're just want to play around before going to sleep. You know, dogs like playing and exerting their energy before going to sleep.

My dog usual does that too. I get the feeling the reason they usually do that because they are looking for warmth

maybe they investigate the place first so that they can feel comfortable
