Are we really what we eat?
Foods contain combinacions of nutriennts and other healthy substanses. No single foods can supply all nutrients in the amounts you need. For example, oranges provide vitamin C but no vitamin B-12, Cheese provides vitamin b-12 but no vitamin C. To make sure you get all of the nutrients and other substances needed for health, choose the recommended number of daily servings from each of the five major food groups: grains, vegetables, fruits, milk, meat and beans. So why do we eat the bad things? Like pork and other oily foods.?
So if you eat pork are you a pig?
If we eat bananas we are a monkey.
If we eat weanies we are a ......
You get the picture....
Is it always right just to eat the good things for us.. i think not.
oh by the way i want some cheese cake today..

I also eat everything and so I am in big trouble. I don't really mind what I eat as long as I am craving for something (except for shrimp coz I'm allergic to it) I was diagnosed having high uric acid a year ago and I came to a point that I cannot move my fingers due to numbness and pain. My shoulder were affected and so with my sleep hours. My "happy eating" days are all gone because of it. I stayed (should I say was forced) away from pork, meat, beans and others and took some herbal medications, fruits and veggies. Good thing my uric is now a bit normal. I only eat meat with moderation :)

do you ever slip up and indulge now and then? and does it affect your body immediately?

Hmm I like that you are so positive loter here and you always can laugh for so natural things ah. It would look too nice if people would eat only good things. Lol just try to eat only beans and vegetables all day. We all are humans so we want to eat some creamy cakes too and some chocolates. I try to eat only healthy food, but sometimes I eat some snacks too.
And we are not what we eat.

I think I may have mentioned more than once Maria that I love a Kebab - I believe they are known as GYROs in the US.
Yes, I love a Kebab... who knows what is in there, I could be eating little cute kitten for all I know.
Tasty though

Gyro sounds like a Superhero name...
You come, fight the baddies.... Gyro Saves The Day
Kebab does not sound nice ever - KEY BAB, KERBAB, K'BAB
Try it with an accent?
Sounds wrong with an English accent
Sounds weird with a French accent
Would it sound better with a Mexican, Greek or American accent?
No, it sounds wrong always
That is why they taste so good

My problem is not my meals or even not eating enough vegetables or fruits. My problem is the snacking. Also, sometimes the meals because I eat frozen dinners just about every other week. The good things: a banana and half an apple every day, often half of some other fruit(pear or orange) or whole something like nectarine when in season, mostly fish(canned) and chicken with only occasionally red meat, canned vegetables most days, fresh broccoli usually six days a week, some tomato slices on sandwich five days a week, some tomato sauce five days a week, 100% whole wheat bread(two to four slices a day), a glass and a half of non-fat milk every day. The bad things: a very large bowl of ice cream just about every day, several servings of some milk chocolate type candy just about every day if some was on sale(I have a lot of it in the pantry from Christmas time sales). Let me add that I walk(2+ hours) and do strength exercises five days a week, could stand to lose some weight but only maybe 10 lbs., never get colds, never had the flu so I must be doing some things right.

I think this more or less means that if you eat healthy, you will use that food to build your body, if you eat crap, you will still use it to build your body, but at what cost to your health and your cellular ability to function well, your immune system, and other things.
I guess it all depends what you expect your body to do for you. I'm not a dieter, and I do NOT cut out things that I love, but I WILL portion control or have ONE of something, like ONE cookie, or ONE piece of candy or ONE soda, or ONE mojito, for instance. I figure if you eat 80-90% healthy and 10-20% crap, or have like a cheat meal or a cheat day, you aren't really doing much harm - as long as you're not physically lazy.
I'm an athlete so I spend a lot of time training for things, and if I cut out a lot of things some people do, I would not be able to train the way I do. Many people excessively diet, cut out carbs, stop eating meat, stop eating anything processed, etc. I do not feel this is realistic at all, especially longterm. The key to being healthy is to make lifestyle changes that are LONGTERM and can be continued indefinitely, not strict diets that are unreasonable and cause you to feel deprived.
Also, it's better to look at your intake over a week, not day by day. You may be hungrier one day than another, or very busy, or short on time or short on good stuff to eat. As long as you have a good percentage of fresh or frozen veggies and fruit, good sources of protein, and you eat ENOUGH for your activity levels and weight loss or maintenance goals, that's what matters, not counting every last nutrient, calorie, or busting your chops for having dessert or not working out.
Moderation works. Think of how amazing your body is and what it's done for you no matter how you abuse it lol. It works a lot better if you take care of it, but it's designed to work poorly too lol. By the way, if you saw how I eat bacon sometimes, you'd think I'd be a pig already, oink oink!

i really appreciate mommyboo's response. it's a revelation that not all athletes do the same thing. the 80/20 or 90/10 rule makes a lot of sense, it's much more realistic. thanks!

So are you going to make some cheese cake :) I know that I have been watching what I eat. In fact, my son is surprised when I come home with lettuce, celery, bananas, things like that. I always have bought these items but now I am really into them. I'll be glad when I get moved as my youngest son always puts in a garden.

You are right, but noone eats to the standards. I would be eating all day, I had a granola bar for breakfast, a slice of pizza for my lunch, and probably wont eat until later. I am trying to add more fruit and veggies, but I simple don't eat that much and the cost.

Hi,
It is very interesting to think that we are eating banana and we are monkeys and jumping here and there. But we should eat balanced diet. Our diet should contain different types of vegetables and fruits. We should eat all the food moderately. Be healthy and happy.

i have always loved sweets, but nobody calls me a sweet or affectionate person! (my saving grace is that i'm thoughtful, so i'm not so bad after all hahaha)
so i wonder if all the people you know who have a sweet tooth are all sweet and affectionate? warm and fuzzly, touchy feely types?

I think people who eat hot and chill food gets angry easily. People who eat meat are said to be short-tempered. People who eat fruits are said to be calm. I think different food has different rule on the behavior of people.

Hello,
The human invention (what I eat ...) leads to massive overweight people...
I mean all kinds of additives, supplements, medications, etc.
The important thing is not to overeat and be a little hungry.
We need meat, fish, vegetables and fruit - Need vitamin and protein.
And any vegetables no replace meat in their chemical composition.
The greatest need is water and salt.
The substrate;
eat products that grow near your location.
Only they will give you everything necessary.
We do not know a lot about the cosmic energy - they are suitable for your live.
For northern areas of living humans not suitable any orange, that grows in the
south (although it is delicious and we savored) and not give the amount of vitamins as an apple growing near his the house.
And -
Millions of starving, not become worms, or something, even though eating what they have.
Maria, I wish you a good day
and eat (in moderation) what the heart wants.

They say we are what we eat. But that does not mean if we eat bananas that we will become monkeys. It mainly means our over all health. So, in essence, we are what we eat. I am diabetic because of what I ate. Thats one example. I need to try and get back to where I was before I gained some weight back. My sugar was up this morning. So, I need to be what I eat, healthy. No, not one food can make things better. We do need to balance it properly.

Hehehe mos probably you might have become a chicken. I do not think that way.
I think the food we eat contains three parts. One part goes to our mind, another parts goes to our mind, and other part goes to our soul.
I think it is good to eat banana and most probably it is good for health also.
