What do you tell your kids to eat when they say this? I always have stuff to eat so I'm not sure why MY kid says it. I do have a friend who has a college age son and I know HE says it because he means there's nothing convenient to just grab, if you want something, it has to be cooked - but there IS food available, it just may not be instant, like cereal, frozen meals or pizza, etc.

I don't have kids yet, but I would admit to this when I was a teen and living with my mom. My mom would say, that there must be something wrong with my vision if I cannot see the food in the pantry or the dish that she cooked in the kitchen. She never take any crap from me and my siblings and good for her. I am glad she brought us up this way.

well, i guess not having what you want to eat is the same as not having anything to eat all. lol. i have to admit, when i am hungry and don't feel like cooking anything,(which is most of the time and i hate to cook hungry) i would rather have things around the house that i don't have to fix. i don't blame them for their point of view.

i am a working mom - so i am not at home during the day.. i normally cook lunch in the morning (leave to be heated up by the kids)..
i try my best to have at least bread available on the table / counter - and my kids normally will go for them when they are hungry between meals.. they'll do what they want - toast them - eat it with jam - with eggs - with cheese... OR, they'll fix themselves a 'cereal-drink'... OR, they'll grab a biscuit / cookie...
it is THEIR FATHER who normally screams '... there's nothing to eat...' - and that is because - he only wants 'ready-made' food + just doesnt want to do anything himself...

Perhaps you need to buy some cooked food just to be ready. So whenever they are hungry, they would go and get them. I would not suggest you to keep too much frozen meals though. As they may not be that healthy. So unless you can be around your kids 24 hours a day, you need to cook something in advance or order something at certain time so that your kids will have what they consider a meal to eat. Of course, teaching your children to cook is not a bad idea but make sure that they are old enough to do that as it may just at worst burn down the whole house or at best they would ruined the food.

sound like it is time to teach the kid to cook or the next time plan a shopping trip with the kid explain that they can pick out the snack that they want with in your guide lines but it would have to last them till the next time that you go shopping have peanut butter jelly and bread on hand is another good thing good luck

It's all about patience at the end of the day, I know, I am guilty of this myself, even as an adult believe it or not, I am hungry, but all the food available needs to be prepared, cooked and served, that's time I cannot wait for, I want it now, so what I do, grab things to snack on instead! Albeit I do snack on healthy things. I blame technology in a way, because kids don't want to leave their computer game, the television or their X box, they want to snack whilst they play, rather than to come away from them to sit at the table to be served a proper meal.

My kids say that all the time too. Like you said, they want something they can just pull out and stuff in their mouths. I don't buy alot of quick frozen foods, because they are so high in sodium. I try to have a lot of quick things to eat like fruits and veggies, cheese, youguts, and things like that.

If the kid wants something that is quick and easy, just point your kid to the fresh fruits and veggies that (I'm assuming) are always available in your home. At least, that is what I would be most likely to do.
I no longer own a microwave, and I wouldn't keep microwaveable "convenience foods" on hand even if I did have one.

This is something that my children say all the time that really does drive me nuts. It isn't true that there is nothing to eat in the house, instead it is true that there is nothing to eat in the house that the kids really do want to eat. I tell them that I'm not going to go buy all junk food simply because that is what they want to eat all the time. I've been doing this for a while now and this isn't something that I hear all the time now, thank goodness.

Just like you, my mom is always ready with food. She's also ready with the instant all the time, just in case if she doesn't cook the big meal. So when my brothers and I say there's nothing to eat, it would mean there's really nothing to eat. And when this happens, my mom would jump straight to the kitchen and cook us something. I love her.
