When I was still staying with my mother, she has this habit of not turning on the television during the morning. No one is allowed to use the T.V. But in the afternoon she's watching these dramas in the television till 9 pm. I wonder why filipino's love to watch soap operas... can anyone explain to me why?

Well, my mother-in-law is different. She would turn on the TV , on newscast and that's DZMM teleradyo, while she goes on her chores at home.
And in the evening, we should watch TV Patrol and after that it's the soaps on ABS CBN, which i also would watch until 10 in the evening.
These soaps are usually what the common people could relate, that's why almost all television are turned on to them specially in the evening.
So, is she Kapuso or Kapamilya?

We stay with our aged in-laws and all of us are Kapamilya. Though, i also watch Temptation of of Wife at GMA, in our room.
But my mother & father are pure Kapuso. But when i visit them, i would always go to ABS CBN and they would watch also and ask , who is that, for some new new faces at ABS.
I too, would do the same with some new faces at GMA.
It's a good thing that mothers have simple joys in their lives, watching Soap Operas.

my mom is a kapuso but sometimes kapamilya especially if robin padilla has a telenovela. I still don't seem to understand, but maybe that is one thing that makes housewives and grandmommys happy

Soap operas magnifies the daily life of the people. It is easily understood and that people can identify themselves right away. And of course, to add to that is the appearance of the very well-kown celebrities.

Well yes, they are the magnified version of our lives, but sometimes its just too much already. like one is too mean - i do not think someone can be so mean in real life that he or she would be going after the protagonist all the time as if they have no lives of their own. its just not realistic even for me to take.

You can never know how some people behaves. Specially those who does nothing but gamble all day or just stays with friends instead of looking for a job to help the family. You'd be surprise at just how people can have weird lives.

I guess a lot of people can relate to the stories. But I never really liked soap operas to be honest with you. I think the plots are more or less the same as the previous stories before. Or better yet taken from some foreign stories, so I don't usually like watching them. And that is being brutally honest.

I think it's because they can relate to those soaps. It's a Filipino thing, especially when the story is about the underdogs, we love underdogs right?

It's because watching dramas is the only way we can entertain ourselves. After 8 hours of working, Soap opera is the only way we can escape reality.

I think this is because the stories were created were interesting to Filipino's taste. The Soap Operas were formulated in a way that we as Pinoys can relate to each or to one of the characters in these drama series. You might have noticed that there is always this certain common ingredient in these stories, and that is almost always what makes them popular... Love, Friendships, Trials, and Overcoming of them. Most of the stories were made to revolve around the characters, how their lives started and how they met the man or the woman of their dreams and then conflicts start to happen and so on.
On top of the common situations many of the protagonists faces, we see that often we are hooked because we are curious what would happen next (although most of the time we do know what's next) even though it can be too predictable at times. ;)

not only the scenes, plots and stories are relevant to most of our real lives, i believe we watch them because we love to see how good (or bad) the actors and actresses we admire portray their own roles. i am sure one will not watch the show if he or she does not like the cast.
by the way, i am also addicted to soap dramas especially on GMA 7.

aside for soap operas is a nice past time i think Filipinos are engaged to it simply because they can relate and the stories are really interesting and exciting.. i myself enjoy watching some soap operas because of the story.. i am eager to watched it because i want to know what will happen with the characters in the story.. will they have a happy ending despite all the trials they encountered..
