Tax frustrations

I thought I had this all under control, my federal tax is done and submitted all over the Internet. But I held back my state tax forms because I like to mail them myself. Well in review I find the tax program for which I had paid did not fill out these forms correctly. So I tried to fix it myself, no go. Then I wrote a question and submitted, now it doesn't take a super mind to figure this company is going to fix problems with the Federal tax forms first, state forms will come much later. I can't find a phone number for a live person so I am going to find a paper form to submit state taxes and fill it out myself. PiSSSed

I do understand the frustrations that you are going through, but I'm very happy as I don't have those kinds of frustrations myself. I consider myself to be lucky that I've never had any kind of problem at all with the income tax software that I've been using for the last ten years. I definitely know that using the software is a lot better than doing all yourself on paper the old fashioned way like I did my taxes the first several years that I had to file income taxes.

It is too complicated to pay tax in the daily life. In my country, lacking of consciousness of paying personal tax is still serious. And, I even do not know the process of paying tax in this discussion, such as federal tax and state tax.

Taxes and all different kinds of financial documents that we need to take care of always seem to involve at least a little bit of frustration. My mom took care of my taxes for me so I didn't get too frustrated with that process but I wasn't really that happy with the results of my tax return. Last year I spent about four thousand dollars or so on college which I was able to write off on my taxes. I ended up getting around two thousand dollars back last year. This year I spent over six thousand dollars on college and I made more money this year and I barely got back thirteen hundred dollars. I was really relying on getting back at least two thousand this year. I was pretty unhappy with the results of my taxes.

I finally did my taxes today and e-filed both fed and state immediately since I am getting a refund from both. AND it didn't cost me a cent! I don't have a 6-figure income, so I never pay any fees to file online. I use a link from the IRS site or my state tax site, so I know up front which services will qualify me for free filing -- both federal and state. I refuse to pay $20 to file my state just to find out I owe more than that to the state or I am only getting $5 back! That's just stupid. I usually can use the same site, which makes it easier and faster because they already have my tax info from the previous year. savypat, you said you already submitted your federal tax -- that's probably why you couldn't edit. You might have to file an amendment. You can use a different service to file your state tax. You don't have to wait for your fed. You will have to fill in the federal info all over again on another site (hopefully with the corrected info), but you can submit state separately without filing or waiting on federal.

They sound like a right headache, I hate filling in forms, they fill me with dread, they seem to want to know absolutely everything, the ins and outs of a ducks whatsits. I am glad I don't have to do my own tax, only if you are self employed in this country do you have to worry about filling in your tax forms. I hope you get it sorted.

I can understand your frustration. I finished ours up at 3:00 AM on March 3, 2013. TurboTax will e-file Federal as well as State Taxes but, then you have to pay $19.99 for the State return. The Federal is already covered when you bought the software. I seriously dislike paying $19.99 for the State return when I already paid $95.00 plus tax to get just the Federal return. Last year I mailed my state return and saved about $18.00 by doing so. I got the State refund within a week and didn't get the Federal refund for another 3 weeks, after that. This year we got a lot of money back from both of them so I figured it would be worth it to spend that $19.99 for the State e-file. We will see just how fast both of them are this year. Good luck.
