I have done tutoring at my daughter's school when she was in elementary school. Although I was a teacher in the past, I enjoyed working with one child who I felt needed help. It was great having a student who really felt motivated and wanted to learn. The best part was when thestudent and I velt gratified when she learned her school work. The nice part about tutoring is thst there are no distractions. When you have your own classroom, there are too many distractions. I may volunteer to do some tutoring again at my neighborhood elementary school.

Tutoring a child is hard if the child has too short span of focus. I've been tutoring our twins who are 7 years old and they are too easy to be distracted with just about anything around. This drives me nuts but I have to control myself. I always handle a stick so that they would know that if they don't pay attention, I would punish them. this has been very effective. Of course they don't wanna be paddled.

or you could also reward them with something they like---something simple and not expensive if they do well.

Yes, I also do reward them with not really very expensive things but not always because they have the tendency to demand for reward always. I noticed when I promise rewards, they'd listen more than ever. They are very materialistic. Hahahaha!
So, what I am mostly doing is not to promise any reward. I just reward them after the tutoring when I see satisfying result. Either I'd take them to the ice cream parlor or to McDonalds or to the shopping mall.

That's a good idea. It should make them feel good. If you reward them too often it has less meaning. This way they can be proud of themselves for doing so well.

I used to tutor my little brother when I was pregnant with my first child. I must say, it really requires a lot of patience! I even felt like he wasn't listening to me everytime I teach him. But when he got his grades, we both are so happy of the good results. My brother was even excited to show me his class card vecause his grades improved. That's when I realize that kids too can do wonders. They may seem like they don't care about school but they sure do know how to motivate themselves.

They care about school when they do well. Once they see they can do things on their own, they are more apt to keep tying in the future.Good luck with your little brother.

Good to hear about your tutoring activities. As you mentioned your student is interested in studies, encourage it.
