Just a few steps from our house is this small market, but guess what, if my counting is right. 80% of the stores, if not selling 2nd hand items (ukay-ukay), they have all brands imitated to serve your thrifty pocket. I wish I could save money but can it guarantee quality? on the other hand, if I want to buy original, I have to travel all the way down to the nearest mall which is 2 jeepneys and 1 tricycle ride away from home. Fare is going to make it more unfair if I add all my expense just to buy this original item. Hmmm. Your comments are welcome!

Second hand shop are also present in our place. Most people would prefer buying in these shops because of the cheaper price. It is also better than imitation on the quality.
That is why my me and office mates would usually visit these shops during break time and even if don't have cash at the moment, we can reserve an item that we want to get it during payday.
Have a great day!

I don't really mind buying ukay-ukay or stuff from the Goodwill of thirftshops. But I do mind if the item is an imitation. I am not really a big fan for "pirated" stuff because it makes me feel like I am stealing from those hard working people. So if I cannot actually afford a big brand or a new one, I would settle for a pre-loved one or something that is not from a big brand that I can't afford.

Hi Raine, I see your point. the idea of imitating really sounds unfair to the creators of original brands. The thing is sometimes when we really need the item and have no other choice, we still end up purchasing imitations. Too bad for these brands,

I guess it's the in thing today, thrift store. And I guess they are earning because almost all corners especially in the city you could find one. I have my fair share too and if you are meticulous in choosing, sometimes you could find items which were not even used or brand new especially the T shirts. And since the price are cheaper because most of them are used, I prefer the branded or original.

I am really a fan of second hand tools and gadgets because you can just acquire it at a bargain price. The only risk about this is making sure you are not being scammed or the object is really genuine.

I do buy imitation from bags to shoes.. I actualy don't care if it is an imitation because if I like some design and style and I know I can't afford the original one then I will buy the imitation.. it will not last that long but what can u expect from it.. but if you are lucky sometimes it last than you expect it.,

That's true. Some imitations lasts longer than expected. Looks like they're trying to imitate the quality too.

I do not buy second hand items. I am not a fan especially if the second hand items are clothes. I prefer to buy clothes cheap at about 100 pesos each but is brand new than a 20 or 30 bucks second hand clothes. I buy cheap and i buy smart. I am not a fan of branded items either but i do know where to buy cheap clothes and accessories. There is always such a shop around, if you just only know where to look. ;)
If the items are cellular phones - no second hands can do for me too, i'd just imagine how much it was used, and probably it was also dropped far too many times already. Phones are running cheap these days - thanks to the manufacturers themselves, they have made it possible for us to also afford the phones at their latest because as they launch a new one the older ones get depreciated faster than usual.

All designer bags cost more than a month's salary of regular employees. And i do not think it is even practical to own one if you are having a hard time to make both ends meet.
Nothing wrong with buying inexpensive things. But I'd rather not buy an imitation of those designer bags coz I feel that anyone who does is trying so hard to be part of the higher strata.

I don't like imitation but does not mean that I am a branded person. I love something original because I respect and appreciate whoever come 1st with the idea. I rather to buy 2nd hand but still have the quality and its original than to have the imitation one. Something original does not mean that it have to be import from anothe country, there many original high quality product from our country eventhough it's not a famous brand.

I am not very patient when it comes to rummaging through boxes and carts of items in any second-hand shops. I get to use branded stuffs because my aunts are all my size and they are in the US and UK. They pass on to me their slightly used clothes, shoes, and bags but more often they give me brand new branded items. But my brothers and sisters often go to ukay ukay stores and patiently look for really good items and I admire them for being able to spot really good ones for very cheap price..original ones that is. And yes, I sometimes ask them to look for items for me also.

i'm actually a big fan of ukay ukay... but I'm also fond of buying branded stuff especially clothes and shoes... however budget wont allow me to do so... as for you my friend you can buy original stuff still. but not that often. maybe at least every 3 months so you may give yourself time to save enough money to buy branded stuff.

A lot if clothes sold in flea markets (or as you call them - ukay-ukay) are actually originals. They just happen to be hand-me-downs from other countries. Keep a keen eye on the items sold and you'll know what I'm talking about. And yes, I'd still buy brand-new originals too. It's just a matter of having the available budget for it. Because I never try to spend on stuff that's beyond my means. Being thrifty isn't really bad practice either.

Brand names do not matter. As long as the 2nd hand items work, it is quality. Brand names and "new" branding are the most misleading aspects of capitalism, and I advise you to work intelligently and wisely. Good luck my friend.
