Publishing advise needed as I am wanting to publish my poetry

I am wanting to publish my poetry and want to know what you think is best way? Some say that self publishing is the way; but then if I do that I must buy so many books and then sell them. Others say that I should find a company that will just take a portion off the sales; but then others reply that you will usually pay a great fee every sale. What do you think is the best way? Do you have suggestions for companies that publish without upfront fees? Thanks in advance.

Try CreateSpace which belongs to Amazon. It's a POD (print on demand) company. This means you don't pay anything to get it in print. You'll need to know how to format your book and you can also turn your book into an eBook for Kindle, Nook etc. Through CreateSpace you'll only pay $10 for an ISBN if you want your own ISBN. If you're OK with your book showing CreateSpace as your publisher then your ISBN is free. Just check them out. It's very hard to find a traditional publisher who seek out poetry collections. Even Edgar Allan Poe couldn't find anyone. I'm a publisher, by the way. Just sayin'.

Edgar Allen Poe was very morbid and poetry "Back Then" was not the in thing.. think of Helen Stiner Rice, Emily Dickensen and others who actually did well with the poems... I have rappers, dj's and others saying my poems are great.. so they must have some appeal?

These days you DON'T need to have hundreds of copies printed which then clog up your garage and you have to sell before you even get your money back. There are many companies which will print on demand. You may pay a small fee for preparing the file, formatting the text, designing the cover and so on and if you want your book to have an ISBN so that it can be sold in regular bookshops or on Amazon and similar online booksellers, you will have to pay something for that. Much of the editing and design work can be done by yourself (or by someone you may know) and, if you can send the publisher a file in the correct format and with all the artwork included, you won't have to pay a thing for it. The principle is that, when a copy is sold, the publisher has it printed and bound and sends it to the customer and then takes their percentage of the price and credits your account with the profit. There are many companies which provide this service. Lulu.com is one with which I am familiar and which has some excellent and detailed help on their website. Amazon also offer a similar service (but I know very little about it). There is a Yahoo Group dealing specifically with POD Publishers: http://finance.groups.yahoo.com/group/pod_publishers/ Like any forum, one may be liable (depending on the quality of moderation) to encounter certain people who can be very rude and nasty to newcomers, so it is wise to explore previous posts and to "gooseberry" for a while before posting.

Wow, owlwings this is the very best answer yet. I had heard of Lulu before and for some reason had put this somewhere beneath layers of thoughts. I also heard that create a space ..something like that does something similar. I know I can put my book in e-format on Amazon. I simply am trying to see what all my options are. You surely gave me the best answer thus far. Will wait a few more responses before awarding best answer ;)

Lulu is good. One thing with them however, is that they charge to get your book on Amazon. At least, that was the practice last I checked. If you publish with CreateSpace your book automatically goes on Amazon, for free. CreateSpace is print-on-demand as well. Also, you get a free ISBN unless you want to buy your own ISBN, then it would cost $10 instead of the up-to-or-over $100 that it would usually cost. You can look into SmashWord (free POD) and publishing on Kindle is also free, but you'll have to know how to format for Kindle. Kindle actually has a free book you can download showing you how to publish on Kindle. Good luck.

I guess being a journalist and wanting to publish would have its advantages. I am not a journalist.. though. . Thanks for sharing this piece of information, however.

Hi little franciscan: I have heard about lulu.com but I haven't tried it before. What if you publish your poems in your blog as a way to start and to use it to attract publishers. I am not sure about the site lulu, check their prices to know if it's affordable to you as a new author. ALVARO

My suggestion is to try publishing on an internet platform first. That way you can gauge readership. Sites such as Helium have a lot of poetry and you are rated by your peers. I wouldn't suggest going out and self-publishing right away and buying books to sell -marketing yourself is more exhausting than the writing process.

I have no ideas for you, but I do wish you the best. My sister in law used to write poetry and might even still do it, and I always thought she would be published someday but I guess she decided not to go for it.

I am sorry for asking a question before offering but I want to understand your goals so I can get a better understanding of this problem as well? 1) do you want 1 or some free copies of your work to keep and hand out? 2) do you want to see your poetry go far and have many copies sold? 3) do you want to make copies of your work available off say your web site or in other places? 4) another goal in mind. Thanks, the publishing industry is changing rapidly.
