Carlisle, England

Many of you know I live in a small city in Cumbria, England called Carlisle. I do know, however that there are a few of them dotted around the world, mainly in America. In fact, there are 11 of them. There is also 1 in Australia, 3 in Canada and my personal favourite Antigua and Barbuda (well, it's Carlisle Bay actually but close enough) and it has its own luxury hotel on the private Carlisle Beach lol. http://www.expedia.co.uk/Antigua-And-Barbuda-Hotels-Carlisle-Bay.h1000902.Hotel-Information?chkin=14%2F04%2F2013&chkout=15%2F04%2F2013&rm1=a2& I would love to have the money to visit ALL of them along with travelling around the world to watch sporting events. A good one on TV at the moment is the New Zealand v England Test Match. It looks fabulous..but isn't in Carlisle. Mind you, I've found this out..there's a Blackpool, New Zealand! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackpool%2C_New_Zealand Obviously, I'm not after finding out where you all live, I wouldn't do that to you, but I find it interesting that place-names you thought were unique aren't at all! It could be a new game for you to play just in case you're very, VERY bored!

Our village has a twin by the same name, and so does our council area. It means that people who don't read ALL of our address end up on the wrong side of the country. When they phone and brightly say 'I'm at the train station ...' my heart sinks. We haven't got a train station. Sigh.

To me, it shows an inability to follow instructions!

Oh my goodness! That would be terrible for a loved one to be lost at the wrong place and you can't pick them up.

Well, I like in Brooklyn New York. I am sure Brooklyn is pretty world famous. But I once did a search for other places named Brooklyn. A few of them came up. I know for sure there is a Brooklyn in the state of Kansas. But I don't know where else there is a Brooklyn. I should do another search to find out.

I will do a search for other places with that name. I just need time to do it. And when I do, I will post it here.

Although I don't like flying and I don't like the heat, that Carlisle Bay in the pic sure looks like a wonderful sanctuary, maybe I could envisage me being there to escape reality! I could quite easily live there! Who says no man is an island I disagree, If I was the sole occupant of Carlisle Bay I'd have visitors sure, but as for living there, it would be mine, all mine (evil chuckles) I only went to Carlisle itself once, that was on the way to Scotland. If you want an interesting name, I can give you Pratts Bottom, seriously it's a village 8 miles away from me. Hope that made you smile ;0)

LOL! You probably don't like him (Richard Branson) but he owns Necker Island. Apparently, ordinary punters like you and me can holiday there. I remember looking through a Virgin Holiday Brochure many moons ago and it was in there, this wonderful little island. That's why Mr Branson always looks so tanned as he spends A LOT of his time there. Can't blame him really, can you? His heart's in the right place.

I agree, those adverts are extremely annoying but I believe a TIVO box is awesome. Sky very nearly went down the TIVO route but chose AMSTRAD instead. Enough said!

I know about Carlisle, Ontario. It's in the greater Hamilton area. And yes, there are many other Hamiltons around the world, even one in South Lanarkshire.

Yes, their football team is called Hamilton Academical, the weirdest name ever..but a good one nonetheless.

I have also found out that the name of the place where I live is also existing in another city here in our country. I just knew about it when I was actually Mylotting while the tv was on. I hear the name of our place and said that there was a fire. I apparently didn't hear the whole story and panicked. Good thing that it was from a different place. Coz it was terrible really when there was a fire a the office of my father in law which was just a block away from our house. I thought that it would spread and reach our house coz of strong winds.

That must have been frightening for you..for a few minutes at least. I take it your FIL is OK after the fire?

The fire was near his office and apartment building. Good thing that their house was a block away from that as well. If the whole building was affected by fire, he'd surely loss Millions of pesos from that property as well as there are tenants in his building. Thank God everyone was spared from being hurt. I remember having a fever that time but managed to jump out of bed.

Our town has a duplicate name as one of the streets in the Philippines. And this annoyed me because one time they thought I was coming from this town, because they have mistakenly thought I mentioned the street not town. argh! there are so many names why have duplicates

I used to live in Bridge, Canterbury. I found a Sydney suburb is called Canterbury and my sister at the time lived in Purley, Croydon. Yes, another of Sydney's suburbs is called Croydon. Canterbury is also a region in New Zealand. It includes Christchurch. Taking of Christchurch there is one of those on the South Coast of England. I saw Blackpool Sands in Devon and you have Blackpool near to where you live in the north. There is a Sidney in Canada like Sydney in Australia.

That could be a fun trip. I know the Pennsylvania Carlisle, but I don't know the other ones in the States. There used to be a good Thai restaurant there, but it appears that it is now closed.

I very much doubt that there is anywhere else with the same name as my home town. This is because the town I live in is very small and it isn't named after anywhere else.It is supposedly named after something that happened in the past.Apparently in the past King Oswald fought a battle near by and lost. His body was dismembered and left on the battlefield. An eagle then took his arm and flew off with it dropping it by or in an Oak Tree.By the tree a spring sprung this spring is supposed to have healing properties. The town was supposedly called Oswalds Tree after the Oak Tree this was apparently shortened as time went on to Oswestry.I dont know if the story is true but you can visit the supposed spring.

Why go across continents. I know, in my state (Odisha) there is a place called Jaipur and it is the name of the Capital of another State (Rajasthan) in my country India. I am sure that this is not just a coincidence and also, there will be many more in other states too.

Well, I knew about the ones here and in Europe they wouldn't exist because English isn't their first language..something like that!

This insight is very funny but very true as well. My town in the Philippines is a small one on top of a mountain and it is quite a touristic place. Anyone back home would know if they hear about my town. It is a place to go to coz it is cooler than a lot of places in a tropical area like my country. It also has maintained a lot of traditional practices that gives the place more of a specific flavor. I found out that there is also a small town in Russia that is also called the same way with the same spelling even. Our national language and my dialect or any of our dialects is not at all related to the Russian language but we still got the same name for a town. Interesting!

It was really an interesting find.I guess the people that live in the other places called Carlisle mostly speak English.Carlisle means fort.Perhaps it was why they all called their places Carlisle.

Hi Janey! That's very interesting. I haven't searched out mine. I used to live in Bethlehem, GA. We both know where the famous Bethlehem is. I'm sure there are more. At Christmastime lots of folks send their Christmas mail via Bethlehem so they have the Bethlehem postmark. I live in Winder now. I've not searched out to see where there is another. This city was once called Snodon when it was inhabited by the Native Americans. When the settlers moved in they changed it to Jug Tavern and then when a man with the last name of Winder brought the railroad through town the city was named Winder in his honor. He was the big boss over the railroad at that time.

Oh my, that's awesome. Jug Tavern would probably be a pub over here. I'm not surprised the name got changed to Winder.

I have found several towns around the United States with the same name as my town. I haven't been to any others. I think it would be a lot of fun to travel around and visit them all! I have not, however, researched whether there are other towns with this name in other countries. I think I will!
