I am living in one of those Asian countries and I have never traveled to United States before in my life. Suddenly, this question pops out in my mind. How big is a hundred dollar in US? What can this amount of money buy? Or perhaps how many days of working would earn you a hundred dollar? I mean the common jobs that people goes to shops and ask for job vacancies. I hope to understand the value of money in US better.

i live in Asia too. Maybe someone call share with us the price of a cup of starbucks coffee, the price of movie a movie ticket, a fastfood meal. That should give us a better idea of what is the cost of living like. I know my cost of living here is high. With no conversion of currency, a cup of starbuck coffee is $10.

I don't buy starbucks coffee to be able to tell you that, but for a movie ticket it's dependent on what theater you go to and etc. for instance our local mall has tickets that cost $3 for new movies which is considered really cheap, but up the road a ways the theater charges about $10 or $11 for a movie ticket. It also depends on what time you go it's usually a little cheaper if you go before 6 PM to the matinee. A fast food meal here averages around $5 depending on the size. It also depends which state someone is from. California and New York tend to be more on the expensive side. So cost of living is much higher, but I want to say their minimum wage is also higher.

How much you can buy depends on what part of the United States you are. In some parts, you can rent a small apartment for around $350 but other places it would cost you a thousand dollars.
We talk about minimum wage, which is set by each state, but most people make more than minimum wage. It's not uncommon to make five hundred a week and more in many areas.
Clothing costs anywhere from $5 for a shirt on sale to a hundred dollars or more for a designer shirt. Average costs are probably around $15 to $25. Automobiles can run $20,000 up to over $50,000, but you can get them used for much less. An old one that still runs but looks really bad can sometimes be found for less than $1,000.
You can buy lunch from a restaurant for less than $10 if you're careful, or you can spend $50 per person for dinner.

I live in the UK where the cost of living is slightly higher than in the US. If I had $100 in my PayPal account, it would convert to around £64 at the moment if I transferred it to my bank (the rate of exchange is actually £0.665 per dollar at the moment but there are charges for the conversion of currency).
The minimum wage here is a little more than £6 per hour, so it would take about 10 hours to earn the equivalent of $100 (for most people, of course, it would take a lot less time).
It is difficult to say exactly how much an average person would need to spend in a week on various living costs but one guide for foreign students living in England suggests that one would need to budget between £150 - £170 a week if you were living in a rented flat, buying one's own food and paying for the utilities. About half of that goes on renting the flat and about £50 a week is allowed for food (not eating out). http://www.ed.ac.uk/studying/international/finance/cost-of-living

Hmmmm... dollar is big for us for those who is not reside in US.
I understand why some people here would work in US and then,
go back here in our own country. They would buy some stuff here because the money is cheap when convert into pesos and it is
already enough for us.

I think it is all about how to use your money. I have learn to make value for money and save it even if the amount is too low. In my idea, hundred dollor in US is not that much amount. as nowadays life everywhere is difficult and expensive.

Well, as I am from Canada, I cannot tell you exactly, but since our dollars are approximately equal, I will go off that. If I worked at a minimum wage job, I would make $12/hour, so 9 hours would make over $100, and for my job, I make $20ish an hour, so 5 hours would make me $100. It is really not that big of an amount here, but $100 could probably get you by for 2-3 weeks on food if you were only buying for yourself.

the average person has to work at least three days to make a hundred dollars. it can't get you very far now a days. it wouldn't buy you a month worth of groceries. if you are really good at finding bargins, you may be able to get yourself a few outfits. you could do more with a hundred if you are single than if you have a family.

On minimum wage assuming you get about 30 hrs a week and work 5 days a week you earn around 200 once taxes are taken out. Average rent for an apartment runs 500 to 600 depending on where you live. Sometimes it is more sometimes it is less. 100 dollars can be a lot I guess but when you get right down to it it's not much. For my family of 3 by the time we pay bills and such and buy things we need it's really not much. 100 dollars doesn't get you very far when getting groceries anymore. It depends what you buy. So I guess it all depends on how you look at it. 100 dollars to just get to spend can be a lot, but to live on you wouldn't get very far. I mean it's a lot to spend for any one item. A toy that's 100 dollars is very pricy. So I guess again I say it depends on how you look at it.

Well...I think the pay rate here in this site for responses per discussion is like one cent. I could be wrong. If I am right, I've made over a hundred dollars here and it took me about two years..
at work, I can make 100 dollars in a double shift..it doesn't go that far if I am getting something for myself but if I am doing something for my son, I can get him clothes, a haircut, anything else he might need and still have enough for a toy or two...it is a month worth of groceries in my house if I don't buy a lot of junk food..
