Cable shows winning a lot of awards and viewers

The cable network shows seem to be winning more and more of the awards and bigger percent of the viewers. The shows that are doing this are the scripted shows. I think the broadcast networks are losing out more and more because of all of the so called reality shows they have gone and because they are doing fewer scripted shows. I don't watch a single reality show. They get old quick. I really like Brooke Burke and she is hosting on Dancing with the Stars but I don't even watch that to see her. But I do watch some scripted shows just to see a particular star. The broadcast networks have too many reality shows in prime time and too many talk shows in daytime. In particular Katie Couric needs to go; I just don't understand why anyone likes her.

Hello stealthy. I have watched the reality shows when they first came out. They soon got old though. I think that it is cheaper to produce those so called reality shows. Some of them are so stupid and really puts the people taking part in them in a bad light. Maybe there is a lack of decent writers in the industry too. These days I mostly watch documentary or the history channels. Some of the cooking shows are too bad.

I have cable and watch several of the shows that have won big awards in recent years. They are costly to make and the cable companies just keep increasing their rates. Many of my friends can no longer afford their cable boxes and have started finding other ways to be entertained. I know that there could come a time that I'll have to turn it off.
The lower channels don't have the big funds to pay for the big names on all their shows. We are seeing the networks air more reality television to the point I'm no longer watching the music shows every week. It was fine when it was just 1 network, but now they take over several nights of the week.

i like some reality shows. most of them are not worth the time though. the reason they have so many of them is that there really cheap to put on the air. i guess the fact that they are cheap is the reason many of them are lousy. i really don't watch cable tv all that much since i've had it with commercials. usually i just see whats on my netflix subscription to see what i like.

Cable TV networks take more risks on some of the shows they run. They don't reach as large an audience as the broadcast networks who therefore get to charge more for the commercials they run. Because they do charge more for their commercial time, the broadcast networks pull the plug on shows more quickly if they have bad ratings and don't allow shows to develop a following.
The cable network shows also usually have shorter production runs. They have around 12 shows year or season versus the twenty to twenty two shows that run on the broadcast networks. That has two effects. It can lead to fresher scripts because the writers don't have to come up with more ideas and second, cable network shows can attract other actors who know they will be able to do other things like movies because they won't be tied up filming a lot of TV shows.

I'm with you! Scripted shows are so much better then this reality crap that has gone way over their 5 minutes of fame. We need to get back to good scripted TV on regular TV. In the beginning of this year I was only watching two scripted shows on TV. They were Grey's Anatomy and Scandal. The rest of my time was devoted to watching movies. Then I added The Following and Body of Proof. Starting today I will add one more which is Revolution. That is five scripted for all of TV that I'm interested in watching.

that is ideally because they target the intended audience and cater to their needs and hit out at their interests and also the highlight is the program is choosen based on award winning shows only
