The number of phones this boy has been through could make your head spin! Geez!
Well we finally put him on our plan about a year ago and bought him an Evo.. same as my husband had. A couple months ago he dropped his phone or something, the entire screen shattered. So, a few weeks ago we got him a brand new one.. thankfully it was free, we just had to pay for activation.
Today I get a phone call from his friend's mother. Her 3 year old broke my son's phone. I guess my son was holding it to text us and the boy knocked it out of my son's hands, and it fell onto rocks and the screen cracked.
The mother was apologetic and offered to buy him a new one.. she doesn't realize these phones usually cost a lot of money.. I think she was hoping to just go get him a Cricket phone or something.
Hubby's not happy about it at all.. but finally calmed down and decided to go see how much it would cost just to get the screen fixed, and also buy the boy a case so the phone doesn't break anymore.
Hopefully getting the screen fixed doesn't cost too much, and perhaps the child's mom will chip in since she offered to buy a new phone.
If someone else's child broke your phone, would you expect their parents to pay to replace or repair it?

We can't really afford much at all.. so it would be nice if they chipped in, but at the same time I don't want this to ruin a friendship..

The phone case we're going to buy guarantees the safety of the phone, or they'll pay the repairs themselves.

Yes, certainly a good idea.. wish we'd thought of it sooner.

I would not expect it, but I would really appreciate any offer. In this case I would not be too hard on my own son as it was not his fault. Little kids are rowdy.

Dads/ husbands tend to act first and listen later. I am glad things will be worked out okay.

I would hope in this case the parent would pay atleast half if not the whole amount. I didn't know you could replace the screens? Is that what you ended up getting done for it? Usually I wear out my batteries on my phone before anything else happens to them. You can find nice cases on Amazon for real reasonable prices. I got mine on there because it's not an "iPhone" it's a real PITA to find them anywhere else.

We took out insurance on the phone and are going to send it in and have it completely replaced.. we've just been waiting a bit so it didn't seem suspicious that we send it in immediately after getting the insurance.

It wasn't your son's fault that it got broken and yes, the mother should take some responsibility. I think that finding out the cost to replace or repair and then discuss it with her. It is not like it is an old phone but a new one. I would hold myself definitely responsible if my child broke anything belonging to another person

It's going to cost $150 to fix the screen. Hubby's looking into whether we can put insurance on the plan and then get it fixed for free.

Yeah, we'd wait, not sure how long. But the family dropped off the $150.. no questions asked. But if we can get it done cheaper or free we'll give them their money back.

That is a huge amount of money Kat. I would ask them to contribute towards the cost. Wouldn't you have to wait six months or something before you could claim it on insurance if it was insured?

It would depend I guess, if it's a brand new phone I would definitely accept some money for the repair or replacement. It's not cheap and it is definitely a bit of a hassle to go through that all over again. I know it is an accident and that nobody wants that to happen but still, it is something that must be done just for responsibility and goodwill's sake.

If we can get the screen repaired, I will let her know how much it cost and see where it goes from there.

Children are always careless, and i think if the parents did not offer and did not contact me at all, i would probably just not mind it and tell my kid to be careful the next time. It was nice of your son's friend to call you and offered to pay. maybe you can inform her of your plans to go have the phone checked at first and ask if she would be willing to just divide the bill and share with you. I think that is a fair offer on both sides.

If I were a parent and it was my child's fault, I would definitely offer to pay for the repair. If it was the other way around, I would hope that they would offer to pay, but I wouldn't force them or anything. Phones are expensive, and unfortunately also quite delicate... Mine fell once and the screen was shattered, it did cost quite a lot to get the screen fixed.

Since i live alone, and my son is gone from home and married, i would say I wouldn't do anything, but say, he was younger and still living with me, then it would depend on how much it cost. I think though that if that would ever have appened, when he was living with me, he would have paid for it himself, since he has been working for quite some time now. Now, it were someone else who broke it then, I probably would expect the parents of the one who broke it to pitch in and help out either for a new phone, or if the screen broke, to hlp get it fixed. I am lucky in that when my kids were younger, they never had cellphones. they never got phones, until they left the house, and that was fine with me, as i wasn't responsible for tthem then. Take care, and have a good day.

I see this happening to my son too.
He's going to grade 8 this fall, and he's already asked for a phone. And seeing how he could be with his 'gadgets', I wouldn't be surprised if he breaks a few phones too.
His ipod's screen has a chip on it, and I've seen his netbook fall a few times.

For me this is just a mistake from her 3 years old boy.
I will just ask myself if it was my son who brooked the phone, what should i do?
The answer is what you have to do on this matter. ;)

Sad to hear about this. It is the parents duty to repair the cell phone if their kids broke it. So there is nothing wrong in your expectation. Hope this problem will be solved soon and the parents come forward to repair the cell phone.

it's interesting to read the other responses and see that most of us feel the same.. if it is really expensive - i would ask the parent to chip, and if the amount is something i can handle - i would just say 'thank you'...
my boys carry their own mobile - and right from the start - we already bought screen protectors, carrying case and whatever necessary to keep their phones 'safe' - you'll never know ... Even i would drop my mobile phone accidentally at times - numerous times, actually ...
