This middle age man came into work, and was talking to the cats. He comes up and starts talking to me.
Now this is a small town so everyone talks to everyone.
He then introduces himself, and starts talking. He was real nice, and explained why he left the job.
I was saying I don't mind the job, he offered if I had any issues with the computer to call him. Because I was telling him about the time, it was after 6pm, and the help desk was gone, and I didn't know what to do.
Now the owner said all this guy did was read the newspaper, and smoke. This guy said he was there 8 years, and I can see why all he did was this. The job is boring at times, so I clean then sit down most of the day.

That was good that he offered to help if you had any issues. Sounds like there is not a lot to the job so no wonder why the guy who left took it easy.

You know, there are probably two sides to every story about jobs and losses. Some people, like you, can find something to do even when no one is there saying to do this or that. It looks good to the boss.

No, he would sit out front and smoke.
But he really enjoys his new job, a lot more hours. He said he left the jobs because the lack of hours. He is older has a family so I see his point.
I don't mind working a number of jobs because I am younger, and just have myself (so I can say skimp on food whereas with kids you cant).

Maybe you can teach the cats some tricks when there's nothing to do.

I too have had jobs that were quite boring at times and I know what you mean about getting bored about what you have to do from time to time. That said, it is obvious to me that the guy that you replaced is not bitter about the fact that he is no longer working there. In fact, it seems to me that he has a tender place in his heart for the place that you are working. It was very generous of him to offer his time and experience if you ever again have problems with the computer in the future.

He told me he even misses the place, he left because they couldn't offer him anymore hours which he needed to raise his family. Completly understandable, I mean I can see right now the hours will only go so far, and why I am looking for another job to get more hours.

Well the sitting down all day and reading newspaper can be tricky, Someone working on something for around eight year can be considered as an expert. For instance, i can do most part of my job while reading newspaper mostly because i have gotten good. Anyways, Congrats on the new job i guess? Try to have fun. :]

It's hard to be creatively busy in a job sometimes. I can understand the owner wanting his employees to busy themselves while on the clock, but as you said, there is only so much a person can do to fill the hours.

Hello, Ricki.
In such a small town , business is doesn't really pick up as much as it does when you have a wider range of customers just like when you are in the city.
I do not wonder why the guy just sat and smoked when he can't think of anything else to do. He was just as bored as you are, sometimes. But, hey, he stayed for 8 years! That's huge!
Maybe, after hearing what your boss told you about him, take it as a cue. Don't be like his old employee, sitting and smoking as if he has no dreams at all. Do something to make use of your time if you're not doing your designated task because, really, there is nothing much to do. Be productive. Besides, you are being paid by the day, right?
Goodluck to you and may you find ways to not to get bored.

Do you still have an interest in your job? If so then continue doing it. If not, think about it. Since you met the guy whom you have replaced, then maybe you can ask him about some tips to get going to the job. And you might soon realize what you think and want in that kind of job.

Wow...8 years of free pay? He should have log into myLot since his boss doesn't bother. I am sure if he is pretty busy at work, he will do his work before being lazy.
Will you do the same?

i always think that its interesting to meet people that you have replaced and the reasons why they left their job. Its sounds like this former imployee was maybe sacked for being lazy i would be wary of this person and dont get to involved because if he dislikes you company he may get you into trouble.

He left on his own will, the owner would never fire someone he is way way too nice, especially if he allows all the workers to sit around. He doesn't dislike it, just that he treats all employees differently which is normal. I use to see this at my old job, the manager or owner would treat other employees and hand them everything whereas others got nothing.

If I were in your position, I probably would have explored more why he actually left. There may be negative things that you need to be aware of from the beginning so that you'll know how to deal with it. It's a good opportunity to get to know the company better. He seems to be a nice guy, so I don't think he will just bad mouth the company or tell lies. He may just tell the facts.
