is it fair to ask people to pay

hello mylotters It has been reported that in Cyprus people may have 10% of there savings automatically taken out of their bank accounts and go to the government to help to pay for their countries failed banking systems. Is this right that ordinary people should be made to pay for something that isnt really their fault. What do you think on this issue.

I think it is really unfair. But it can happen anytime. It is always the hard-working, honest everyman that suffers. At least they could have done this by announcing and having a different kind of tax...

This is called stealing. Traditionally its done by changing currencies and not giving a 1:1 trade on the old money. I guess the authorities are getting more blatant in their fleecing of the public. My family told me this was done at least 3 times in the soviet union. During the US great depression private ownership of gold was banned.

i agree with both of you, people have worked all of their lives and payed their taxes for the government to take even more of their money its wrong. I agree it is called stealing i dont see why we should be expected to bail these banks out when they have caused it with reckless spending.

Do the people of Cyprus (Greek Cyprus or Turkish Cyprus) pay regular income tax from their earnings? What is the retirement age? Other European Counries may have a much higher age at which one can claim a pension. Is the country in a deficit position? If so the Government may attempt to rectify this situation. How much do bankers make? Is this in line with the wages of other professions? All these are questions I would ask in order to say if it was fair or not to take away a percentage of savings.

yes the people of cyprus do pau regular income tax but because of their banks reckless spending they are fincianal trouble. The cypriat government expect the tax paying people to pay out of their own pockets. Im not sure what the retirement age is in Cyprus i think its 60, bankers make get a bonus of about 1 million pounds a year and are still recieving it, so why should we be expected to pay for their mistakes.
