Forgot my picture of my lunch

I made a discussion about portion sizes with gastric bypass. I put the picture on it but didn't upload it. So here it is. Did you know you can make your mind up to eat way less and not feel hungry? There is a difference between being hungry and wanting to eat. I realize when I think in hungry, I just want to eat. Now that I've gone back to tiny portions for tiny stomach I don't get that feeling if wanting to eat. This is 2 ounces of stew and one ounce of cornbread. It's on a dessert plate to give you a sense of the size of my meal.
Your thoughts?

I don't think I could do Weight Watchers because it's a life long commitment if you want the weight to stay off, but I can plan a little better and limit portions. My biggest downfall is snacking, and I know I can eliminate or minimize that.

Being a normal weight is a life long commitment for those of us who have weight issues. Weight Watchers is great because it teaches you to eat healthy and limit serving sizes. That's why people who go on diets don't succeed over years and years if they don't change their lifestyles.

When you have a food addiction you can just think about a certain food and get very excited about eating it and think you are hungry. My poor grandson does this alot. Escpecially at bedtime. He is 150 pounds and about five feet tall. We will probably have some more corned beef and cabbage and maybe some cornbread with it. I have been thinking of cornbread lately. Hungry for it lately. Glad you are able to eat those small amounts.

Oh bless his heart. That is really dangerous for him at 10 years old. I was like that. In the 5th grade I was 140 ponds. In 7th grade I was 200. When I had the bypass I was 412. I am stuck at 290 right now and have been for forty forevers.

I know the difference and I didn't have the bypass surgery, my stomach is not small like yours. I get hunger pangs and I feel weak and because I am a diabetic i have to eat.

You'd be surprised what you can do when you want it bad enough. I have less hunger because I stimulate less insulin to be secreted. The more you eat the more you want to eat. There's a difference from wanting to eat and truly being hungry. If we lived where there is no food we could both live a year on our fat stores alone. We carry our food store in the form if fat.
I eat what I want but a lot less of it. 2 to 3 ounces of food is plenty for a few hours. I try to eat 6 times a day. I fix it in advance so I can just nuke it for 20 seconds. I eat 4 to 5 teaspoonsful at one time. After the first day it's easy. It's the same as I did for the first 2 years post op. I let myself get complacent and I gained 70 pounds. I still have 30 pounds to lose to get to my previous weight. Then I can begin losing for real.
This is not a diet. This is just eating less to accommodate a small stomach. The stomach stretches out when you start eating more volume, so I will be measuring again. I didn't have this surgery just to get fat all over again. I have to care. I do care.

good for you. my doctor advised eating like that only small amounts 4 to 6 times a day because of my irritable bowel syndrome and low blood sugar to boot. my problem is im weak and when i like something at times i over do it anyway

It's easy to break those bad habits. You just plan for it. I like to make soups/stews in the crockpot. I have 2 ounce containers with lids. I also make cornbread and cut it up into 1 inch squares. I eat small like this 6 tomes a day. I also eat an apple it two a day or make a frozen strawberry smoothie with a sweetener and 4 ounces of low fat milk. I usually have 1 cup of salad a day with 1 tablespoon of French dressing.
Everything I put in my stomach is measured in advance. I make Crystal light tea or some other flavor. I measure out my coffee creamer to 2 tablespoons. I don't use sugar on or in my food.
If I want egg and toast, I make 1 slice of toast and cut it in half. I cut the egg in half too. I eat the first half and later I eat the other half.

Wow - that's a teeny tiny portion!! My friend had gastric bypass and he shows us on Facebook his portions too. Makes me feel like I'm eating like a pig!! I am a small person, but I sure can pack it in. I don't like to boast that I have a high metabolism because that's not necessarily a good thing - seriously, I can get hungry pretty quickly. I totally eat until I'm passed full and I know that's bad. This reminds me I need to be more mindful of what I eat and how much!!!!!!!!!

You're doing great, PQ! And kudos to your brother - wow!
I don't know about lucky here. I have the genes to not gain so much weight - but I have the other problems of high cholesterol, high triglyceride levels, and since with my 2nd child I had gestational diabetes that makes me pre-diabetic for the rest of my life.

My labs are all normal thank goodness. My cholesterol used to be heart attack level when I was over 400 pounds. My labs have been normal for over a year now.

Oh to be so lucky! I want to have 80 pounds off by next Christmas. My brother lost 160. He walks 7 miles a couple of times a week. I can't do that, but I stay busy and get a good bit of activity. I kept over 120 pounds off but still need to lose 80 more.

I normally don't eat a lot of food, many say I eat nothing but to me it's a lot. I usually eat a small breakfast, and lunch then usually sa decent supper. I did this when I worked nights, because I couldn;t sleep without being so full feeling sick. Last night I ate 4 tacos which is rare so I dont stop myself.

I love tacos. I could make myself sick on them. I make myself just eat a little instead of a whole taco at once. I just crumble up a taco and split it up into half portions. I put about 2 tablespoons of the taco meat sauce on it and eat it that way. I want to lose 80 pounds by next Christmas.

wow, this is interesting. and for you, this is sufficient to last you for 4 hours without getting hungry. i like your distinction of being hungry and wanting to eat. i will share your thought with my friend about this distinction. she will be happy to hear it.

It's really easy to see it because I am more satisfied with less. This proves that when I eat more, and feel an appetite it is just because I want to eat. I need to get back into the habit of the tiny portions like when my bypass was new.

You mentioned that you are 290 and I am really impressed that you can eat so little here. Are you eating more times?
Anyway, whatever you are doing please be under advisement of a doctor because loosing 80 by Christmas does seems attainable but I don't feel it should be done alone without the necessary periodic checks if the diet is suitable.
All the best.

Yes I am under a doctor's care. I was 412. I've come a good ways but got complacent and gained some. I've list 40 of the gained weight. I still have 30 more to lose to get to square one again.

Given my size, I never worry about consuming too many calories. I have always been thin, and I tend to burn off calories easily. Add to that the fact that much of what I eat is fairly healthy. For instance, this evening's dinner was tempeh with corn and green beans with a bit of seasonings and topped with a good pesto. Later, I snacked on sesame sticks.
I will say that often people mistake thirst for hunger. It is important to stay hydrated.

I'm glad you don't have a weight problem. I have been obese since kindergarten, at least. I'm not sure what pesto is. I'll have to search that.

I had to try and load something several times before it would take a few days ago...and the amount of tags they want on your pics.
Know what you mean by being hungry and wanting to eat. I've been bored and felt like eating something. I almost wonder if it's imprinting from when we were younger. I'm bored, here have a brownie or go get a cookie. God for bid if someone got hurt doing something because then there was cake involved.
Anywhos...Portions make or break us really. It isn't what we eat it's the amount that we think we need to eat.
Have broken down in boredom and ate something. Raw carrots, orange or an apple. They are a main stay for us here.

hi dear PQ when I saw the pic of your lunch I really had to remind me you have that gastric bypass......I could not live on that for sure. What I do is I walk an hour a day its to the station and back home again and I try to eat more veggies and full grain bread, brown rice and full grain pasta which all are good for me.

Hi Ritter. It's easy for me. Since my stomach is 'built' to be small. I am fixing to have my strawberry smoothie. I make it with frozen strawberries and milk in the blender. It's a great treat.
I do very well with small portions.
