How important is "eye contact"?

When I am buying something in a store, it is important to me that the clerk makes eye contact (our eyes meet) at least once and, hey, the cashier should look me in the eye before taking my money.
When I want a straight answer from a client or child or friend, I always feel better when they make eye contact with me.
Suddenly I wonder if wanting to look them in the eye is over-rated and not neccesary or old fashioned and a sign I am just an old fuddy-duddy about manners.
What do you think? Is it important to you?

I think eye contact is important, it's a bit like the confirmation that people acknowledge you're there in the first place, you know? But I do seem to have some difficulty when it comes to making eye contact... I have to think about it, and it's quite annoying and awkward. I have to think wether I look at peoples mouths or eyes. Sometimes I even forget I'm looking at their mouths! I am also too intense, not in the way I look, but in the way I am, and people kind of feel that too, as I'm quite an imponent person — in the best of ways. People respect me too hard, and sometimes they feel weird making eye contact with me, which makes it double awkward.

Hi friend, I think you are not old fashioned if you want to make eye contact with person who talk with you. It is a good feed back as a evidence that she or he respect to you. In my opinion, eye contact is the way a person concerned with me, I also want all people who contact with me make eye contact, I also do it when contact with person. i think it is the way to respect.

I do feel that we can always tell if a person is telling the truth by if they do not do eye contact or if they look away when saying something.
I do feel that drs also look you in the eye all the time that they are talking to you, as well as the nurse when she comes to see me at my house.
I also feel that by looking at a person when chatting to them is more of a respect things as well.

I think having eye contact is important, it shows that you give the other person attention, you don't have to stare but have some eye contact would be respectful.
