Coffee a dollar a cup in Mexico?? are they nuts?.........

Mexico
March 20, 2013 8:57am CST
I have been an owner at an internet cafe here for almost 2 years now. I rent out computer time here. I sell copies and things. I also sell coffees from many countries. I make 4 diff. kinds a day here. Plus reg, mexican coffee. Yesterday, I went around to a few internet cafes, to get ideas on how to get some more business. I was so surprised at the prices I say. I charge about .80 per hour on computers. I charge about .55 per coffee, I give free refills if they are also on a computer. I was surprise to see 5 internet cafes, charging 1.00 for a reg. cup of cheap mexican coffee. This is even more than I paid in the usa. Are these people nuts?

Well, some coffee cost more as I get them from other countries. But the cheap mexican coffee should never cost a dollar here.

May be they want to make some quick buck by charging a higher price than yours, i am sure there are always some fools out there like to be taken for a ride in those high priced internet cafes, strongly believe just by paying premium price on the cheap Mexican coffee, they are doing a patriotic duty to Mexico, you shouldn't be too surprised there is always some nuts out there willing to play the role of suckers by doing exactly that. Don't worry, continue to charge .55 per coffee if you are still making decent profit from the sales, i am sure your regular customers will appreciate yours' cafe everyday low price and will come back for more later. Just let's those fooling people continue to frequent the businesses that charge higher price until their heart content, they have too much dough inside their deep pocket.

Taxi drivers pretty much know where to get the best coffee for the lowest price in the city, if they continue to come back to your shop for coffee at 5 am, 7 days a week, you probably are making the right decision of charging .55 a cup, instead of higher price. You may not make very high profit on your coffee per cup, but you make up the difference from getting sales in other items in yours cafe. That is the way to go in business, my friend!

True, but I bet they dont get 15 taxi drivers for coffee at 5am 7 days a week like I do. Most even buy gum, candies, breads and cookies.

People mainly drink cappuccino here in Australia and it's $3.60 a cup...which is about the same as US $$$. A sandwich will cost anything from $5 - $8. Wicked, yes?

We pay even more but a lot of things are expensive. Homemade items are a real attractive attraction. I think as far as people are concerned even those without much money will spend what they have if they like something. Anything that brings them pleasure they buy right? Most people here carry at least a twenty dollar bill with them when they go out. Myself, I look carefully for bargains but if the coffee is good and I like the atmosphere, don't really care if it is a little more or not. i just don't want to go somewhere and feel like i am #27 now get out! You know what I mean?

In the past I should veggies and eggs. The eggs didn't make much so I dropped them but my customers told me later that they would have paid double because they liked them so much. I think some things are a come to me product while other products are the make money ones.

Nope, here would be $3.00 - $7.00 a cup depending where you go. I went to a coffee shop in the mall where I work, and got a small cappucino for $1.50 which is unheard of, didn't taste that good either.

No its in south africa. Things here are expensive. Its actually cheaper to buy a coke in america then it is here. Its even cheaper to buy a coke in london then it is here. here a can is $1 about and in the uk its about 50p which is almost half the price :(

Although they are asking a dollar for a cup of coffee, they must be selling the coffee otherwise they'd have to put their prices down. Ask yourself was the cafe busy, were people buying coffee? It's supply and demand, if people think a dollar for coffee is too expensive then they wouldn't buy it, but obviously they are!

I think Wolfie is right and you could put a ten cents on each cup and see if you are selling the same amount of coffee as usual.

Im thinking of that. I do though think Ill leave the price alone for the taxi drivers. As they come here 7 days a week.

If the cost for things are cheaper... here I see a big difference in the country side than in the cites where wages are higher but so is everything else so I'm not sure which is worse.
• Mexico
22 Mar 13
Very true, but hard to understand how prices can be higher in a poor country.. than say in he usa. Where many make 100.00 or more per day...
• Mexico
20 Mar 13
Yes, but money in the usa is always higher than say mexico is. Remember our min. wage here is like 115.00 a week. Not a day.

That seems cheaper than in America. Maybe it's a different size of coffee cup? You said regular size, I wonder if regular there is regular here. I'm not really sure. I don't drink coffee. All I know is if you want to go to Starbucks, prepare to pay through the nose.

They shop around and if they get a better buy go elsewhere. Sooner or later someone asks themselves what they like best and toss out the poor places that might have a lower price. Like department stores that sell cheap stuff but have really bad service. You have to ask yourself if you want to stand in line forever for a few cents cheaper for example.
• Mexico
22 Mar 13
True , if they can get those high prices. I dont think i can here.

In the world of business, I believe the answer to your question at the end of the post would be I don't think so. You should know that internet cafe business simply does not earn from renting computers out by the hours only. I am sure there are many additional services which could be offered to increase earnings like selling refreshments, cold sodas, hot beverages, snacks, instant meals (t.v. meals or instant noodles) or fresh tacos. While you may charge a reasonable price for your coffee, I don't think there's anything wrong selling at market price because it would mean profitability which is good to have for the sustenance of the business. Besides, the other cafes may have different operating cost than yours. I believe internet cafes can derive income by providing top up service for various MMORPG games for gamers or you may want to consider giving computer classes to elderly computer illiterate folks. Setup WiFi hotspot add a few tables for coffee or refreshments + .15 for WiFi access. I am sure you need to consider what you will need especially the funds for keeping your machines to be fast and with the latest upgrades in online games and whatever. So, you are not nuts if you are charging 1.00 refillable coffee.

Work out a depreciation cost for your existing machines into your rents and you can upgrade the machines in due time. Then, sell the old ones at a low price for more income and in your bulk order for new ones get some rich neighbors or relatives in so that the quantity order can reduce the price for your machines.

Around here, Burger King is actually the lowest priced of the fast food chains. They are selling any size cup of coffee for .25 cents and lattes for $1. The quality is not as good, but if you are looking for something economical, it'll do!

That's pretty cheap for coffee really. Local cafe charges $1.20 with free refills. Any gas station close by is about $2.00 per cup (and that's a small one). I don't think a $1.00 an hour would be unreasonable to charge for computer time. You said you have a lot of young customers, do you sell soda as well? I would think that would be very popular amoung the younger people. That and snacks of cookies and brownies.

You know, a dollar is actually a good price for a cup of coffee. StarBucks charges way more then that for a cup. So does Dunkin Donuts. And most stores here charge at least a dollar a cup. Maybe less for a small cup. But, a dollar is a good price. You could undercharge everyone even if you raised the price on a cup of coffee from 55 cents to like 80 cents or even 75 cents. And you can raise the amount of the time on the computers. I think you should be charging at least a dollar an hour or more for the computer time. You need to make money. After all you are running a business.

May be, some of the owners might think that if people are too interested in drinking coffee, they will anyways go for it. I have seen it in many Malls in India- things that should be something like Rs. 30/- being charged Rs. 45/- and so on, based on the thinking that people who come to such places would anyways have so much money to pay anything they are charged.

It's been so long since I paid for 'a cup of coffee' (as I usually have-instant coffee at home or -FREE coffee from church ... I know it's not "free," but you know what I mean). & I don't think I've EVER had it in 'an Internet cafe,' but--the one time (a long time ago) when I DID buy 'a cup of coffee,' it was something like $2.50. Granted, it was 'gourmet' coffee. And in US-money; is that what you're using, or are you on pesos? What's the difference? Why?

Its a part of everyday's life. People think that they are sharp enough but other one make them fool. And you know that prices increase on area bases also. On some area we get coffee at low price while on other areas we get high price, its all about the locality and many people think that if they are paying high then they are getting good things.

a cup (a very tiny one) of espresso costs 80 euro cents here in rome or probably in all over italy. this is equivalent to one US dollar. if you go to the more chic coffee shops, the price would be higher. the prices are indeed very high these days. everything is expensive.
