I have been working the night shift for almost a decade. I usually get around 5 hours of sleep everyday. Other co-workers get lesser sleep than me, but I am the only one on my shift that seems to be close to being narcoleptic. I am having trouble keeping a job because of this condition. I need to know natural remedies/homeopathic options to cure this disease. It is so frustrating to want to be productive but my body just seems to shut down.
Anyone know of any herb or fruit of whatever to keep me awake? Coffee does not work for me anymore. I am a Type II Diabetic.
HELP! :(

Can you not find medical help to treat your condition? It seems like such a simple thing; yet, not getting enough sleep is serious also. I'm caught between the devil and the dark.

I am amazed at how you have put up with your work for 5 years with just having 5 hours of sleep. I also used to work on a graveyard shift but since I only had an average of 4 hours of sleep in a day, I quit my job after 4 hours. I was really afraid of getting sick.
I think that you should learn to sleep longer hours by making your room a bit dim so that you'd think you are sleeping at night. It will help you have a very restful sleep.

I'm finding coffee isn't working for me either. Lately I just feel even more tired after a cup of coffee. I don't know if you can chew gum; however, it has helped me stay awake to finish the job. Sometimes a warm glass of milk before bedtime helps me sleep.

I would try to avoid night shift job as much as I can. It is not that I cannot take some hard life but it is not good for you to stay awake when your body is programmed to sleep that time. Anyhow, if you can only work during night, perhaps you should consider getting some good sleep until an hour before you go to work. That should give enough rest to your body. Other than that, you can try to move your body and constantly exercise during work time. That can help you in getting pass some time.

Oh my god, i feel so bad for you and i know u must be feeling bad for your health. All i would like to say is that sleep is must for everyone and if u r deprived of sleep then illness will definitely attack u in one form or the other. So i think its time to look out for another job where u can work in day shift that might work for you at present.
