I May Not Be Quite Right........

March 21, 2013 9:51pm CST
I have always had my strange ways, little oddities that define my perculiar personality. I am pretty sure that I am not the only one that does this - In fact I know that my youngest daughter does it. We are in the 21st century - Landlines in the home are fast becoming a thing of the past. That special place in the house where the phone lived. Most people in the UK had one phone, it was either at the foot of the stairs, in the living room or in the case of our phone - In the hallway. It makes sense, the phone in the hallway, out of the way and you can make your calls in private. We all have our own mobile phones now... I have one, the missus has one and the kids have them. If my phone rings at home - what do I do? Take the MOBILE phone to the hallway and answer the call.... If I need to make a call at home - what do I do? Take my MOBILE phone to the hallway and make the call This makes perfect sense to me...

@urbandekay Didn't she mean the nostalgia you display, rather than nostalgia for you?

I understand where you're coming from, my friend. There doesn't seem to be any privacy regarding calls now. As far as our landline goes, we have one in the living-room (right next to me in fact) and another socket upstairs that we don't use. One annoying thing I don't like is when my FIL rings up. He ALWAYS rings John's mobile, NEVER the landline. Why? Because I'm likely to answer it that's why, being on the computer right next to it. I mean, is he that frightened of me or what? Both my Mum and myself still use cordless landline phones to ring each other up on. I don't know why more people do this as it's free (well, sort of, there is a monthly charge but it works out cheaper than if we were tempted to use them all the time) and I remember the time being changed for free evening calls from 6 to 7pm and WE WEREN'T TOLD. Why John didn't complain about this at the time I do not know as he would've had to pay a fortune.

I guess if you didn't have mobiles though, you would.

I think no one takes advantage of the free calls - i know we don't. Our land line is only in really for the internet

@robspeakman Unfortunately you didn't win it this time either. Mr (Or is it "Dr"?) McMad came in by stealth and stole your blessing.

What's a mobile? I shall be the last person on earth with a landline and will go down fighting in my determination to keep it. Befriend a landline today. They have feelings too!

I did try but I discovered that a smartphone, Twitter and Mylot allow me to be a miserable old bugger in cyberspace as I move... That almost raises a smile

After all what else is a hall good for? Besides you want your phone call to be private don't you. Blessings, we all have funny habits from the past.

True - It is just a hall - A way to get from one place to another.

So whether it's your landline or mobile, you make calls on the hallway. I make calls in a quiet place. Quiet enough to make the receiver of my call to hear me well. Honestly speaking, I seldom make phone calls. I just only call if I have to tell something very important. I just usually send text messages to my husband, etc.

Oh. My response didn't mention about private calls. I prefer calling in a quiet place. Even if there are people around, they shouldn't be talking loud so that the other person on the line will hear me well and I could hear her or him well, too.

hi robspeakman I think I must be the last person in the US not to have a cellphone but I have a landline which is on my desk and I can answer while mylotting even, I just cannot afford the monthly plans as I am on social security and SSI which are ate up by Gold Crest monthly room and board.

@robspeakman It's useful if people have snipped your landline when breaking into your house while you are there. A friend of mine was beaten up by two such gentlemen because he didn't have a mobile at the time. Fortunately, however, this is unlikely to happen to Patsie at Gold Crest, which, in spite of its name, is unlikely to offer rich pickings to these people.

To be honest i do not even know why I have a mobile - I do not get many phones

Surely that's just showing consideration to the people you share space with. If your phone rings and there are other people around it is polite to take yourself elsewhere to have that call, to avoid forcing everyone else to listen in and to stay quiet whilst you do so. I wish people in public places would show the same courtesy, and take themselves and their phones away rather than force everyone to listen in to their inane drivel.

so who says it doesnt? yes thats the usual place. yet here everyone just went to their rooms and since others moved and its just son and i, we still usual go to our rooms or even outside. doesnt matter. we dont have much to hide from each other. guess it just depends on how private the call is or if you will be disturbing the tv watcher, etc.

I don't have a hallway. But if is a private call then we go outside or to a bedroom. One thing though, all calls are on vibrate as the son can receive over a hundred calls a day and the noise would drive us all crazy. I do actually have a landline as it is cheaper to call the son in the USA on this one. Plus my cell (not mobile) is paid by employers of my part time job. There is a limit that I check constantly as do nit ever want to go above the limit as I will be red flagged as it were. Not good.

Landlines now are usually what's being used at offices. Each big company has their own landlines with trunklines to connect you to various departments. But when it's personal, one can just text or call on his/her cell phone.

Well, here we used to have the old type phones mounted to the wall, one in the kitchen and one in the living room. But ever since I had a mobile phone, I personally don't go into the hall, but I do walk away from anyone to speak in private. I think it is habit. But the one place where I hate the cell to ring is in my car while I am driving.

I don't always carry a cell phone with me. The other day I forgot to take mine and needed to phone a friend to see if she were at home. Found a pay phone but it didn't work. It did take my 50 cents and wouldn't give it back.
