How did you get your pets?

Did you buy them from a breeder or in a pet shop? Or did you buy/get them from a friend or did you get them from a shelter? Did you find them in a different way?
My first choice is always a shelter. Before we bought our dog we checked the local shelters, but they didn’t have any Golden Retrievers, so we decided to buy our dog from a breeder instead. We got our cat from a shelter 4 years ago, at that time she was 2 years old. One of our guinea pig also came from a shelter and she was also a couple of year old when we got her. Our rabbits came from a pet shop.
My brother has a cat that he has rescued. The cat was abandoned when he was very young. A friend of my sister-in-law found him in a park. She wasn’t able to keep him so she asked my brother and his wife if they wanted to adopt him and they said yes. One of my friends has 3 cats and all of them are cats that had been abandoned by the owners. Another friend has a dog that had been terribly neglected by the previous owners.

I prefer to get a pet from an animal shelter. After all, I want a companion, nto a show quality animal.

I think that a shelter is a great choice. When I want a new pet I always check the shelters first because there are so many pets that are abandoned by the owners and I if I can I like to give some of them a new home

I had a few dogs and cats, from different sources. My first dog a small mix I got when I i was still at home, from some people I did not know. Then when my daughters were 8 and 12, we got our first Rottweiler,a female from a breeder.Since then,we rescued an other Rotti from the vet,3 cats from shelters, and the most recent pet,was our retirement present from my stepson,an other Rotti(my avatar)that he got from a friend. All were loved and cared for.

It sounds like you got your pets in many different ways. I have never had a Rottweiler, but my friend had one in the past. We have 5 different pets and they also came from different sources (shelters, a breeder and a pet shop) Like you we got our cat from a shelter. She was two years old at that time and she was very scared in the beginning, but today she no longer hides all the time. One of the guinea pigs we had in the past also came from a shelter. I was surpried to discover that there were shelters for guinea pigs in my area, but I was happy that we were able to give her a new home.

Most of the time I have my pets from the pet shop. As sometimes it will be embarrassing to have it from a friend because he/she may want to sell for it for some money rather than giving away free of charge. Besides, if you have a pet from a friend, sometimes you have to report to him/her that his/her pet is well. It will become to be a force in my opinion.

I never got a pet from a friend, but I think that you are right about the questions that they would ask. If I had given a pet to a friend I would probably ask the same ind of questions and I ask him or her how my pet was doing because I would still feel attached to the pet somehow and I would be interested in their development. Like you I got some of my pets from a pet shop. I have bought all of my rabbits in the same pet shop, but the shop doesn't exist anymore, so if want to buy more rabbits one day I will have to find a different place to buy them. I would like to get them from a shelter, but shelters with rabbits aren't common here.

Hello
Porco I´m so glad to read you. My father always bought his dogs from the breeder. But my grandfather and I, recue dogs. And my husband loves to rescue cats. We just bought 15 years ago one cocker spaniel because I always wanted a cocker. But before and after her (mimie) we always rescue animals from streets.
Blessings
Porco... dainy

I enjoyed seeing the picture of Mimie. She looks so cute. I have never had a cocker spaniel, but I have always liked them. Our dog is a golden retriever, and he will be 4 years old in August. I grew up in a home with dogs, but he is the first dog that I have had as an adult. He is a very active dogs and he likes to play. I am happy to hear that you and your husband rescue animals. Unforunately a lot of animals get abandoned and live in the street. We got our cat from a shelter. She had also been abandoned and she was 2 years old when we got her.

I have numerous different pets and they all came from a variety of different places. I have a bearded dragon, savannah monitor, bald python, two rats, and a dog. I got the bearded dragon from these people that put up a flyer for selling him in this natural foods store that I go to. My ex-girlfriend bought him for me and it ended up being from one of the people that she works with.
My savannah monitor came from a pet store in Petoskey, Michigan and it's called Tropic Cove. That pet store has a lot of awesome pets in it and I'm always tempted to get more pets whenever I happen to go there.
My mom bought my dog and I think that she got it from a breeder somewhere. My girlfriend had the rats and the snake so I just kind of inherited them. I love all sorts of pets and I can't wait to own more in the future when I can afford more.

You have a lot of pets
I am a big animal lovers myself and I have a dog, a cat, 2 rabbits and a guinea pig. I have never had any reptiles, but my friends keeps snakes as pets. I like to watch from them a distance but I am afraid of being too close to them. I am not afraid of other reptiles, and I think that it could be interesting to keep some of them as pets. I love to visit the pet stores and look at the pets that they sell, but it is a "dangerous" place to visit because I always feel tempted to buy some the pets that I see. We don't really have the time or the money to take care of more pets at the moment so I have to control myself
Which pets would you like to buy in the future?

I haven't ever had any pets due to allergies. But if I am gonna decide to get one/could have one, I would take it from a shelter, I think. Or from a friend. Maybe from a pet store, if I wanted to get a bunny or a kind of animal which is not that common at the shelters at my place. But I think, for me, getting pets from a breeder is just a waste of money, because I'm not insisting on a certain breed.

I think that a pet from a shelter would be a good choice. In my country there are many dogs and cats in the shelters, but it would not be easy to find a rabbit in a shelter, and that is the reason why I bought my rabbits in a pet shop. I still have two rabbits left of the 6 rabbits that I originally bought in the pet shop. Today that pet shop no longer exists so if I want to buy other rabbits in the future I will have to find a different place to buy them. I agree with the things you wrote about a breeder, if you aren't looking for a particular breed there is no reason to buy your pet from a breeder.

I would never buy an animal. All of mine were rescues. It's better to give a good home to an unwanted pet than to buy one creating more unwanted pets. You don't have to just find them at shelters, you can find them on Craigslist also.

Hubby likes pure bred dogs, so we have gotten ours from the breeders. But I always had mixbreed dogs as a kid and really like them better, they seemed more healthy also. So I prevailed and the last dog we got was Sadie a mixed breed hound. We got her from a free add in the paper, but a shelter dog would be fine. Cats usually come to us, so many people go into the country and turn out their unwanted cats. This is a terrible thing to do, most starve and are eaten by wild dogs or other preditors. But we have had good luck with the ones we have saved.

My parents also like pure bred dogs and the dogs that we had in my home were always pure bred dogs. Personally it is not important to me if the dog is a pure bred bog or a mixbreed dog. Our dog is a golden retriever and I chose that breed because it was one of the breeds that my family had when I was a child.
A lot of cats from my country get abandoned when the owners when the owners get tired of them, I think that is terrible. It is so sad when they just abandon the animals. The 3 cats that my friend has are cats that she has found outside in parks or other places. The owners have abandoned the cats and some of them were ill when my friend found them, but they are doing much better now.

I don't have any pets in my house. I don't like them much. Because I don't have enough time to care them.
In my local, we don't have many pet shops, too. Normally, everyone buy them from a friend or at the market.

2 years ago, my cat came to my house as stray cat. She like to hang around at my house, and since all in my family like cat, she became pet in my house. I used to call her "Kucing kecil" (little cat), but after she had her kitten I call her "Mbok" (mother), but my neighbor call her "Pichi". Now, she is live at one of my neighbor's house, while I have 2 of her kids as my pet, their name is Poki and Picha.

Hello
My first dog, Princess, was a pure Shetland sheepdog which my ex-husband purchased for my birthday from a certified breeder. She was and still remains in my heart even though I had to have her euthanized at the ripe old age of 15 years and 9 months old. Even though she lived a happy and long life, she was always a little bit sickly and very difficult when it came to feeding time. My second dog, Tasha, is a mix breed Siberian Husky and German Shepherd. Her right eye is blue, her left one is brown. She is now almost 15 years old. Unlike Princess, Tasha is much healthier and much more active. I think it is because she is a mixed breed. I have often heard that mixed breed are healthier in general compared to pure bred dogs. I got her from a friend of a friend. She was the smallest of the litter and also the palest. Her fur is sand coloured with some brown and black on her back. She was supposed to be my own security officer but she is really a softie and a wuss. Anyway, as you might surmise I just love dogs of any type except maybe for pitbulls and rottweiller. I find these breeds too dominant and too strong for me.
It is nice to see such discussions on one of favourite subject of dogs. I really understand the saying: "dogs are a man's best friend". Tasha is my best friend, my confidente, my morale picker-upper etc.

I have had the best experience getting my pets from the animal shelter. With the satin bunny rabbit I got from a shelter, I got a ton of helpful information about her. They explained why she was there/why the previous owner had given her up, also told me her age and breed which I have found it's hard to get that information from local pet stores. I do not oppose to getting pets from a pet shop, I actually have 2 guinea pigs I bought from a pet store. What I wasn't thrilled with about the pet store is they couldn't tell me how old my piggies were, and also one of them was clearly malnutritioned; practically skin and bones! Another reason I prefer animal shelters is they often make sure you go to the vet within a few days of purchasing your new pet; sometimes even give you a free vet visit! Overall it's better that any pet is in a loving home vs. anywhere else.
