Why Do People Use their Cars for Short-Short-Short Trips?

I mean, here in Oklahoma City you get used to 'taking the car everywhere' because places are so far-apart here (I've got to walk 5-or-10 blocks to get to the nearest grocery-store); so people with cars would probably use their cars to make even that short trip.
(And yes, that IS short compared to some other walks I commonly take!)
But I remember--when I would go over to friends houses who lived in my suburban neighborhood--my parents &/or their parents would drive us to-&-from! Are we all so-lazy?

Haha! I'm actually guilty of that too. Like i drive myself to the gym, i too dont get why i do that. Why do i drive myself to the gym? And I'm going there to work out too.

How far do you live from there? Are you often rushed, with little time to work-out before you have to go home/work?

Our store is only 5 blocks away but it would be hard to carry all our groceries home. I try to run all of my errands at once as everything is in the same area except our varsity store. It is a mile away we well as our Drs. office.

I know it might make you feel "old," but you ought to get one of those 'walkers' (the ones with the little metal-basket in them) to carry heavy stuff like that.
I 'pirated' a shopping-cart for that, but the people at fast-food places don't like it when you shove one o` those bulky things into their little places

I remember in one town where we lived a rich lady had a three wheeler bike with a big basket on the back. I had thought that would be what I should have. I am not sure I would be able to carry 5 40ty lb bags of water soften home at once but maybe I could buy two every time I went. I wouldn't be able to do that in the winter and not even today because it is snowing outside and the wind is blowing.

My son constantly grounds me here when over using the car. We live 1-1/2 blocks from main street so the pharmacy, library, hardware store are all very close. My boy will walk everywhere, even the grocery store 3 blocks away (he takes his younger siblings with him to help carry then).
Is it we depend so much on something like a car/truck that it's second nature to jump in and go? Sometimes I wonder.
Since I work out of town, it is almost second nature for me to hop in the car because that is what I'm used too.
I forget how close we are to things sometimes.

Haha i think its all the fat and lazy people of the world today. and yes, you can blame the food. all this junk food does for us is nothing but weigh us down in fatty preservatives and additives. all this unnatural food will kill people slowly but surely. the sad thing is most people already know this but, they ignore the warnings. then when they get sick and vomit all over the place they wonder why they are so sick and soon after that they want to run to god...some problems nowadays are fixed with the simplest of solutions...

This drives me nuts as well. I only understand it if they go grocery shopping for heavier things (like a 6-pack of 1,5 l mineral water... now that's something I would not necessarily carry around on foot or on the bus :D). But otherwise... people are sooo damn lazy nowadays, they wouldn't even invest effort in walking down 3 blocks. Unless someone has serious leg problems, that's just pure laziness.

I DO have serious walking-problems, but I still HAVE to walk almost everywhere (unless I can get a free ride )

Hi,
You are right. For short distances we can go by walking. We should not use car. We can save petrol and walking is a good exercise. If your parents have difficulty in walking then it's OK. Now we are becoming lazy. We don't want to walk. we all are machine dependent.

I would even suggest taking LONG-DISTANCE walks if you've got the time: like I USED TO live about 8 hours' walk from where I went to school---I don't think I EVER walked there , but--if I had for some reason gone to sleep at 3 p.m. the day-before and thus awoken at 11 p.m.--I MIGHT'VE made the walk there.
I might stand up at church and PRAY that everyone 'see the light (of walking more places)' and -that they start doing that---saving their cars & trucks & vans & SUVs for when they need `em.

BINGO! You hit the jackpot! yes, we have become lazy to walk just a few steps away from our houses. The convenience of getting the four wheels working is a much better idea than tiring our old feet.

I doubt it's about being lazy, it's also about (at least we think it is) saving time plus the fact you don't have to carry all your groceries!
I wonder how far 5 blocks is. We walk a lot, even 1-4 hours to get at a shop.
Also we use to bicycle. My children have to go on bike to school which is 16 km's a day for them and 32 for me.
I know my dad was Always taking his car for everything, we even said he would take the car to visit the toilet if that was possible.

With the conveniences the world has to offer these days, including ease of transport, I guess that people have become lazy generally..and have also become more sickly. You see, a lot of people would prefer to use car or motorcycle even if walking is possible. Here in my country, many of the car owners would choose (they would even wait for a space to be vacated) to park near the gate of huge malls because they are lazy to walk. And these same people are probably those who have already developed cardiovascular or heart problems because they lead an inactive life. Walking is still the best exercise for the heart.

Actually, each region has special behavior when using car. In my region, people using car just for long travel at least 10 km and more and bring heavy goods, when they just going for less than 10 km they use motorcycle, moreover when the traffic busy, they prefer use motorcycle. I think this behavior just habit in each region but it is not mean they are lazy.

Sometimes it could as well be pride. Some people look at walking as an embarrassing situation. They feel they are to good to walk. You may see some people you know riding by while you are walking and they laugh at you just because they are in a car and you are not.
