Where do people go when they die?

It's been a while since I last visited mylot, miss you guys!
Recently my best friend's grandma died of illness, and she was upset even before the death of her grandma. She read books about death relieving, and said that it was helpful to the patients as well as their family members. I don't know about the details of the books, but I'm wondering, where do people go when they die? Is there really a spirit thing? If so, where do the spirits go when they leave the human bodies?
P.S. No offence for the ones that have religious beliefs, and I hope you can share your perceptions as well! As for me, I guess the spirits of people WILL leave the bodies, stay at a peaceful state, and wait for a next life. Wow that's mysterious to me!

Well, it IS a big book and boy oh boy you always learn something new.. has depths each time.. and it builds your faith, it's like promises to us.. I believe people go to the grave and await the resurrection, one of two! Most don't realize there will be 2 resurrections.. I have a blog if this take on it interests you - http://inner-monastery.blogspot.com/ Don't believe anything bad you hear about God! He gets a bad rap! 'Hell' for instance is a mistranslation, which should simply read "the grave", and Jesus lived, etc to rescue ALL from it..

I firmly believe that there is someone way higher than all of us in this world. Do you wonder where we are when we are not yet born? So if it's possible for us to live this life here in our Earth. It is also possible to live another eternal life in a better place. I believe in the Bible when it says that there is heaven and hell. Justice will prevail during the judgement day, and all people who were aggravated will live a peaceful life and those people who punish other people will definitely receive their own punishment from God. Life is mysterious as you've said just as mysterious on how the Earth was formed. There is a creator. Everything that exist were created and formed thus so the existence of Earth was started by a higher power.

well from what ive read..the spirits leave the body in peace once proper rituals and customs are done...but if not done..the spirits wander in the earth without being able to get peace or get on with their next life...they are referred to as ghosts...ghosts as in sense spirits not at peace...and those spirits that have been given proper customs are at peace and move on to their next life...if they have committed sin in that life they turn out to be a sinful life form that is gonna be subjected to sadness and pain and torture...but.if they have done good things,they get a beautiful life in the next one...and so goes on the cycle...

That is up to them, to their soul/spirit. It's just the (sick/tired) body that leaves behind. The soul will not die, it can rest for a longer time (time the way we know it is invented by human being), it Always been there, it can choose how to improve itself by helping out others for example.
