I got chatting to an old person at the sports center

In the spa room of the sports center I got chatting to one of the old people. He said that for 8 months of the year he lives in his rural mountain house in South Africa and for the rest of the year he lives at home in England. He came a month and a half early so he could go to an English friend's wedding. He usually only spends May, June, July and August in my home country. He adores living in sunny South Africa for most of the year. What do you think of this man's home and away life balance? Would you be keen to live part time overseas when you become an old person?

If I could afford that, I would eliminate freezing cold and snow from my life as well, haha :D. I'm not sure if I could accustom to a whole different country and customs at an older age, though.

Yes this is something that I have often thought about it, although I would do it the other way round, I would escape the UK Summer and find a much colder climate and then return for our Winter, I wonder if I will feel the same when I get much older, I wish I didn't have such an intolerance towards the heat. There is a neighbour who goes over to Thailand for 3 months of the year, our Winter, and his girlfriend comes over to see him for 3 months of the year our Summer, so long distance relationships can work, they always seem so happy together.

I would love to be a "snow bird", excepting that, like my mom did, I would have a place in the north of the States to flee the heat of the Texas summers. Don't think I'll have the money and really don't want to think about moving the cats...

I think it would be something I would love to do if money allows when I am older but, unless I win the lottery, I can't see that appenign to be honest! If I was going to do that though and could choose anywhere, it would definately be Italy. I love the country so much and would love to have a home in Tuscany.

I think it would be awesome to be able to live in different parts of the world as an older person! It really would be a dream for me. I envision my old years as a nomad traveling in an RV and writing for dollars. I think it would be great.

if he's in england from may to august only, then that would be spring to summer, am i correct? so it means he times his visits during the warmer seasons so it's similar to "sunny south africa." stories like these inspire me to prepare for my own retirement. even if it's not overseas, at least in a place where i really want to live.

There are a lot of people who cannot stand the cold weather, so when it is cold in England, Canada, and the other northern countries, they will spend the winter farther south. The reason that it is not happen as much is because now if you live in Canada, you have to get a passport to travel to the States or any other country. I would suspect that he was born in South Africa and had to get out. Oh being an old person but not in my mind, I would not mind traveling on a cruise ship. Oh and they would have to take my piano as well. I really hate the cold.

he seemed to be perfectly choosing his lifestyle and i think he's enjoying it. not all people are as fortunate as him having been traveling to many places. if i have that same amount of money when i get old to suffice my needs and wants, then why not, of course.

I wouldn't want to commit to that much travel when I'm older. It's hard to travel that sort of distance without flying, and I wouldn't want that to be an unavoidable part of my life.

what a lovely life he has. i would love to have enough funds and retire to my home country too. does he still work? if not, how does he spend his days in south africa? i would love to stay home and take care of back and front yard gardens full of flowers and vegetables when i am older. i'd also enjoy it if i would be financially able to travel to another country at least once in a year.
