Clean shaven instead of facial hair is still my preference

I just can't get used to men with a facial hair. To me it looks unkept, and my reaction is ..'ya need a shave' I suppose my preferences are influenced by what I grew up with and am used to. I am use to a clean shaven guy and young or old, I think they look like they forgot to shave. I wonder if this is generally true among the older crowd verses the younger crowd..but then I see older men doing the same thing...

I think it varies a few days of facial hair growth can look scruffy but a well trimmed beard and moustache can look very smart.I have personally tried to grow facial hair but it ends up thin and patchy,so I shave everyday as I end up looking scruffy whenever I have tried to grow facial hair.Maybe my opinion of facial hair is influenced by what I grew up with and what I am used to as when I was a child as my Dad had a moustache.

anklesmash I didn't make myself clear...I don't mind trimmed beards and moustaches..in fact my hubby has had a moustache seems like forever..what I mean is the unshaven, hald shaven sruffy look that is so popular with a lot of the younger crowd.

Even I don't like men with beards and hair on their faces although I have mustache if you think that too comes under that category. You now it was part of our tradition to keep mustache as symbol of manhood and in some cases they did not shave their mustache as long as their fathers were alive. Although the younger generation is not big follower of that tradition any more and shaving as per their wishes, me- I do it twice a day.

Aha...The mustache, denotes the young man has reached puberty, in many cultures.....BUT, were you aware that there are some cultures where the male does/cannot grow facial hair...like Native Canadian Indians? Their faces are as devoid of hair as a baby's bottom...and that is why, there are so many other rituals to denote manhood! Just a useless fact....as I just wanted to say "hi" and so, so glad to see you here, my Little Bro!

suni51 My husband has had a moustache for years and years..I like it. When I said clean shaven I meant the 5 o'clock shadow look that has been popular for a number of years. I prefer moustaches to beards because they are usually neater but well kept beards are ok.

I prefer men that are totally clean shaven and won't have any rough bristle. If a man shaves every three days he builds up stubble that is a bit like a hedgehog. Any age of man can look lovely if he has shaved well on his face. If a man has a beard it can make that man look around 10 years older.

maximax8 I don't mind wel groomed beards and moustaches..it's that 'forgot to shave' look that I don't find as attractive as shaved.

As a man,I just must be clean shaven. I can't stand it any other way. If you watch the TV commercials, the guy who looks like he forgot to shave that morning is the look they are after. I guess some women like the stubble look. I don't understand why, then again I'm not a woman.

bird123 My husband agrees with you. He prefers a clean shaven look. LOL in fact there have been times he had to run an errand and had not shaven so I told him don't worry..it's the style now. He still feels uncomfortable if he doesn't shave...

Before I was fascinated by guys who have beards especially if it's well kept. But this days more and more are donning it and I can see some just grew their beards for the sake of having it, maybe for them they look more manly. But if it's not kept well trimmed, it looks dirty so if possible I like clean shaven too.

stanley777 I think it must be hard to keep a beard well trimmed..seems easier to just shave it all..but again it's the scruffy all over 'forgot to shave' look that I don't understand. I just can't see why it is popular.

My dad have always had a mustache. It is because he want to hide a scar on his upper lip. So seeing him that way, is fine with me. But with other people, yeah, just like you, I prefer clean shaven face. One that looks so fresh all the time.Makes me want to smell that person all the time.

Personally, I am always clean shaven, I have grown a moustache in the past and have grown a stubble, but it itches too much and I just cannot get used to it. I am self conscious of my upper lip so I thought growing a moustache would hide it, in the end it drove me wild, so I shaved it all off. I find that I need to shave every 3 days as it tends to grow quite quickly.

I agree with you! An unshaven man looks unkempt, as if he did not really care about his appearance! A shaven on with some shaving lotion on looks, feels and smells much better!

back in the day, i use to like it when men are clean shaven only. now, i think it depends on the man and how neatly he keeps his beard. my husband looks good with or without one. when he does wear one, he keeps is neat.

MoonGypsy I agree. I so wish we could edit..I forgot to qualify that neat trimmed facial hair is fine..it's the scruffy look that I don't care for.

Sure glad I read the entire discussion, as my response, my friend would have been different...I think you mean NO stubble???? Can't really say...one way, or other, as like me, I like to take a day off from putting "my best foot forward" in make-up and dress! So, I can see a lazy Sunday, and a stubble growth..But the Public personna should be of clean shaven, and if there is facial hair, e.g. mustache, etc., the areas around well kempt! Just my take!

Hey, my friend...far be it from me, to tell you about a mistake..at first I just didn't understand! Now, I do...! As for what I said on "suni's" response, there are aboriginals of many countries whom do not have facial hair (males, that is...LOL!)

Hi Big sis- I am bit confused though but if I remember right, I saw three of them sitting on a roadside playing a violin, shabbily dressed, eyes gazing in an uncertain direction, seemed like under influence of. I am not sure but some thing highly toxic, singing a sad sounding song which I did not understand a bit, face covered with bushy beard that looked as if not seen a razor for years, all of them, people donating coins and those three not giving them even a glance. Maybe I missed some thing but to me they looked like what you call natives, by the way I saw them during my 3 days visit to Ottawa way back in 1999. I am sure they were not the ones you have referred in your post in my box but I mistook things altogether. I felt bad for long time and their looks still haunt me whenever a reference of the place appears in front of me. Cheers. I am surprised to note some of the traditions which we are not aware of, but one cannot know all about traditions of different cultures.

I like a bears 'IF' it is neat & cut short. I dated a couple of guys that wore beards & i liked them very much. It definitely depends on how they keep them for me to like them. Hope u are having a good weekend.

I like the clean shaven look too. I think some think they look sexy if unkept. I think the men with 5 o'clock shadows look scarey and weird. Like they are cave men or something. I think that it is on a individual opinion and what you are used to.

I usually prefer clean-shaven guys, too... and I don't mind facial hair as long as it's nicely groomed and well-kept. I hate it when it looks like they didn't touch it for two months, that's gross.

Hey Stary, I too like to shave, especially for my special someone, as I know she likes it and appreciates it as I like and appreciate it when she shaves her legs :) I find my brother who now has facial hair (beard and mustache) dubious looking and He doesn't look trustworthy to be honest. Have a great day !

elitess LOL I never thought of comparing it to shaving legs..but you certainly have a valid point. I always shave my legs and I think all women 'should' but then different cultures find it acceptable to not shave... Hmmm interesting idea of 'hiding' behind facial hair... Thanks for the comment...you seem like a very nice guy!

I always liked facial hair better. I guess that is because I am older (57) and that is what I am used to. I also like chest hair more than a bare chest which is popular today. I feel the more hair the better for men anyway.

That is probably true of people older than me. I am 57 and grew up in the 60's. Everyone was a hippie then and had a lot of hair.

cerebellum That's very interesting because I would think older would be used to clean shaven..meaning no o'clock shadow, which is so popular now.

well clean shaven gives a more clean and.hygenic look where as tinges of beard give a rugged look..always walkin around with the same style isnt gonna be nice...and some hairstlyes require clean shaved while some hairstyles are better lookin with tinges of beard..so thats it

Dhinilshanker I really think a lot depends on what we are used to seeing. I always associated unshaven with unkept but now it is a fashion statement...I think sometimes it's just hard to break old thinking patterns..

Can I Keep It, Dear? - my Fu Man Chu back when I was 27-28
Maybe my facial-hair is my curse---a 'thorn in my flesh' I must keep until my 'wife' (AFTER she moves-in-with me ) tells me to remove it. Or I'll keep it until G*d tells me to leave it!

I also prefer clean shaven men, especially for my husband. Whenever he lets his stubble or beard grow a bit longer than usual, and he kisses me, my cheeks would be so red and they will feel so itchy as well.
