Recently one of my business associate who suffered hypertension, diabetic and others complication etc and asked me how to choose a doctor. The first answer I shared with him includes personal friends and from other doctors you trust. The second kind of reference, I advised him to seek professional information about the specialist about his training and experience; where he has studied, whether he specialized in a medicament that is of particular interest to you.
What is your advise ? specialist physician or a general practitioner ?

I had a doctor tell me this and happy to pass on the information. Everyone should have a GP because they will be able to advise and regulate your overall treatment if you require some. If you have a specific problem that needs attention a specialist will be able to provide more treatment than just general medical assistance.
Some people have several problems. It is important to stand back and look at the overall picture so that one treatment does not conflict with another.
As a person looks at a specific issues like a stressful job then also they need to look at the effect this would have on say a diabetic issue, what a change in meds would mean and in turn the effect meds would have on other things.
As far as references go each doctor has strengths and weaknesses. I say that because I found out they are human beings too.
Sound reasonable?

Yes, I do agree that all doctors has strengths and weaknesses but it is a matter of life we therefore, needs to be careful and even get a second opinion is required about the particular type of medical records and test results we should bring along. Usually an experienced doctor is extremely unlikely to be offended because a patient wishes to have a second opinion.

What you shared to your business associate is correct. The professional information, specialization, and experience really counts. It would be much better if you had chosen a Internal Medicine with a specialization in Cardiology.

Yes, one of my friend who suffered from sugar diabetics for many years had became vulnerable to kidney failure. As a result, he needs to undergo 3 times weekly dialysis to clean up his kidney. Besides one of his eyes sight is partially blind. Expert recommend that anyone with type 1 or type 2 for five years or more, should have an eye test at least once a year.

Hi,
For minor illness I used to take advice of general practitioner. But for diabetes or hypertension or any heart problem we should go to specialist, or cardiologist. We can get information about such specialists from our friends and our neighbors and other doctors or our family doctor.

Yes, you are perfectly right in choosing types of doctors. However, some general practitioner especially in rural areas, they cover and perform a wider range of services than the specialist physician.
