Last week on Palm Sunday, we went to church. The Priest in-charge, who will lead the service, was fall sick until he cannot get out from his bed. So the assistant priest was on call for taking over 1 hour before the service.
During the sermon, the assistant priest said he wasn't prepare as it was last minute so his sermon will not up to the standard.
The I said, WHAT? What do he mean by unprepare? He was schedule for the next service afterall around 9.30am. Furthermore, Palm Sunday always pick the same verse every year for sharing. There shouldn't be any excuse for not prepare.
I'm kind a dissappointed hearing that. For me, priest should always be on hot standby. He should able to give sermon even on last minute notice. What if somebody from other religion debate with him about Christianity, he will for sure lost big time.
I hope I will not hearing this excuse again from any priest because it is not exceptable for me.

That is so surprising that he would admit not being prepared. Was he a younger Priest just starting out? Every Easter its the same verse like you say. Unless he was talking about the sermon itself that he had nothing prepared. However, you said he was suppose to be doing the next mass so he could have used that same sermon for both masses.

The priest have been in service for a long time already. I didn't know how long, but it was long.
I never really understand this priest sometimes. I like he didn't focus much on his work as a priest. even if had prepare, his sermon didn't have much meaning and just kind a weak.

I guess he's not devoted to his profession. That's really embarrassing and disappointing. He should be ready because that was Palm Sunday. There shouldn't be excuses.

You're right, because it Palm Sunday. I can say that every year the reading for the Palm Sunday will always be the same and so does the reference for the sermon.
even if it is not palm Sunday, he should be able to give sermon anytime required if he is really take things seriously as a priest not as somebody who only do it because it is his job or profession.

Hi,
He should not say it, admitting unpreparedness in front of the congregation, it is bad practice. If I have to listen to a priest speak from his heart, then it would be more effective than the most perfect oratory. The words of God need not be prepared like a culinary treat but should be spontaneous, speaking from one's experiences and daily life. Being unprepared only shows how far one can be from the thing he preaches, not being able to do it in the first place, which makes me doubt about the veracity of his words.

By saying that he is unprepared just show us that he is not a proest we should trust to guide us through our faith. A good and devoted priest should be able to speak from his heart and let the spirit guide him. I hope this priest can become better because this type of priest will not bring people anywhere with their faith.

Perhaps the assistant priest should not have said that he had not prepared even if that was the case. He should have proceeded with what he had to do and do it the best way he could. Nobody would have complained about his performance as they all knew that he was called up in the last minute. Furthermore, it was a task that he had also been doing so that was not a "new" task.
Having say that, what was his actual performance? Was it disappointing? He might have still done a good job even though he said that he had not prepared.

I agree with you on some points, and not on others. I do agree if it is the same verse picked every Palm Sunday, he should know better and be prepared.
But as for the others... priests are like teachers. By being unprepared, he did not mean that he did not know about the subject, but as these priests have their sermons every time on different subjects and verses, they might want to prepare for it, like rehearse what they are going to say. It's not like all priests can talk about every sermon in the best, most excellent way if they are stopped on the streets :D. It's just like every other public speech.
