Our new dog of two years old is very ferocious, when my husband takes him out for nature
relief, he drags my aged husband roughly and pounces on the other dogs on the street,
though the other dogs keep to themselves. Sometimes my husband finds it very difficult
to handle him. How to control it and change that habit?

Hi,
It sounds to me like the dog has dominance problems and canine aggression problems. The first thing you need to do is become the pack leader. To become the pack leader, you need to show the dog that you are a stable pack leader that he can respect. You do this by training the dog and by instituting a "nothing comes for free" policy; make the dog sit or do a similar command for everything - to go out, to get fed, to get petted etc. You also show you are the pack leader by going through doorways first, not allowing the dog on the furniture etc. I would recommend doing at least 30 minutes of training with the dog daily. Never hit the dog or become violent, that will simply prove to the dog that you are not fit to be the pack leader. Dogs respect a stable pack leader; someone that has to hit a dog is not stable and is not a good pack leader.
The dog is also probably under exercised- many aggressive issues comes from lack of exercise. You do not mention what breed the dog is, but if it is a larger dog it generally needs a minimum of 1-2 hours of exercise every day. Dogs that are under exercised tend to be more aggressive.
Canine aggression problems can be difficult to fit, you need to get control over the dog first, which you do by becoming the pack leader. Then you will need to train the dog to walk properly and slowly reintroduce him to other dogs. I would recommend getting some professional help. You need to get control of the dog before someone or another dog gets hurt.
I have been doing dog rescue for almost twenty years, what you are dealing with is fixable, but it will take daily dedication and patience on your part. Good luck

Your response is encouraging my dear friend imphavok. We feel it is a cross breed. Somebody
left it in our area and it was struggling for food, as it was domesticated and did not know
how to find food for himself. It used to cry before houses to know where it's master's house
is and a lady was throwing stones on it and to escape that stone, it was running fast towards
a heavy traffic road. We took pity and adopted it. We gave all necessary vaccinations. It
is very affectionate towards people. The only problem is with other dogs. The moment it sees
another dog, it shouts and goes towards them. It is well-behaved otherwise. My husband
is controlling it and now it is better to some extent. But still he is afraid of taking it to
roads where many dogs are there and I am afraid, till he comes back home with the dog. Thanks
a lot for the suggestions and we will follow them.

Thank you for the instructions about not hitting. I had a neighbor who hit his pit bull because she chewed cables. I said something one day and he threatened me so I called the cops. The officer who showed up said he also owned pit bulls and agreed with hitting for discipline. I feel bad for those dogs. They were quite sweet and just wanted to be loved. They were still puppies.
You really sound like you know what you're talking about.

I never had a pet dog, nor will i have any, here you find tons of stray dogs in street, some are sick with falling hairs, today i had gone market to buy color and 'pithkari' for my grand kids, one brown dog suddenly ran from left to right got dashed on the front wheel
now i will tell you, why we are not favor of dog as pet, well my elder son was bitten once by neighbors dog 30 years ago, and my grandson just 5 years ago.
Thanks for this discussion

Oh! Sorry to hear about your son and grand son being bitten
by dogs. It was a pathetic scene to see the dog trying
to find it's old masters, who have left it in some new
place to fend for itself. If it was a street dog right from
the beginning, then that was different. Our heart melted
at it.

In addition to the good advice you got above...
There was a TV series called "Dog in the City". Jared would meet with people with doggy behavior problems and teach the people how to work with the dogs to solve the problems. He even had a situation similar to yours. Maybe you can find it on DVD.
Then there's Cesar Milan, "the dog whisperer". I know he has books and DVD's on his training methods. You might also look on YouTube for him.
Don't give up, this is fixable. Good luck.

In my place there is no such academy existing as far as
my knowledge goes. But I heard that there is one
organization started recently in a distant place and
will check it with them
Thanks for the suggestion.
