Hello mylotters, I was wondering if you guys enjoy eating sardines, be it freshly cooked or canned. I regularly buy canned sardines since in my country, fresh sardines are not commonly sold at wet markets. Anyway, the good thing is unlike tuna and other fishes, the canning process does not take away most of the nutrients on sardines, hence in terms of nutritional value, canned sardines is still good. What I also like about sardines is that they are low in mercury content compared to big fishes, not to mention that they have a lot of health benefits like promoting heart, bone and optimum health. I prefer canned sardines in oil (soya), which I usually eat with slices of wheat bread or with rice. I also like spanish style sardines, nonetheless I would appreciate any variant of canned sardines, in fact just recently, I have tried canned sardines that was canned with coconut milk.

You are totally correct in saying that sardines are among the healthiest food we can have and affordable too. I always have sardines when I go to the grocery to buy my stocks at home. There are a variety of viands that can be created with canned sardines. One is to saute in garlic, tomato and onions then add thin slices of bitter gourd and malunggay leaves .Another is to reheat it from the can and add previously heated onion rings, add in a little soy sauce and lemon calamansi juice. When I have bokchoy, I saute it and add in sardines. There are a lot of things you could do to make your healthy sardines more interesting.

Thanks for the response. Yeah that's really great, sometimes especially when I am in a hurry, I would just open a can of sardines (dip in soya oil) and add some calamansi juice then eat it with toasted whole wheat bread or rice.

I sardines, actually its my favorite viand, i'm not so choosy when i comes to sardines, the brand doesn't really matter to me, for me its good, but i haven't tried yet canned sardines with coconut milk, i wonder how's the taste of that, but i'm sure it taste good too, maybe i'll buy one of this this days. I agree that sardines is a healthy food because it contains omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA which reduce cholesterol levels and benefit heart health. But it has also a negative effect it can cause detrimental health conditions because has Mercury, and too much in take of mercury is not good to our health.

Thanks for the response. You should try the adobo sa gata (coconut milk) variant of canned sardines, it really goes well with hot rice. Anyway, regarding the mercury content of sardines, they're lower compared to big fishes like tuna etc.

I used to enjoy sardines very much but lately have simplified my eating habits to fresh, uncooked fruits and vegetables. Hopefully this will keep on improving my health even more.

Thanks for the response. Yeah eating certain foods raw are really beneficial to our body, specifically fruits and vegetables. I still some fruits and some cooked and fresh vegetables but since I am just staying at my grandparent's place, my options are a bit limited compared when I had my own apartment while attending university. I used to buy all sorts of green leafy vegetables and blend them together and make an epic smoothie :) and I also drink raw free-range organic eggs back then. Anyway, you should also eat once in a while some seafoods since you definitely need iodine for your thyroid health.

I have no problem with my thyroid as many fruits and vegetables contain iodine. Strawberries are high in Iodine and I sometimes eat them by the case when is season.

Yeah I was surprised that fruits and vegetables contain iodine. Based on what I have read online, this is due to the soil where these crops are being grown, fortunately some farms add iodine to their soil, just like with the case of strawberries. I hope that farms in my country does the same, so that most of us will have adequate iodine intake daily, since eating sardines alone won't fulfill my daily iodine requirement.

Hi, Those silver-scaled fishes abounds in our waters here. Old fisherfoks usually don't pay much attention to them, they go for bigger and more expensive varieties. With the decline of fish catch due to overfishing, sardines nowadays come eye to eye in price with premium species, especially during full moon season when catch is scarce. It is one of my favorite fish, freshly caught from the sea, eaten raw or stewed or roasted in open fire. The oily ones I liked most, I also hear they are good source of Omega 3, a chemical compound for good eyesight and overall health. However, when there is an oversupply like in season time this summer, it is delegated back to its second choice status and the best we can do prevent them from rotting is to dry them in the sun. They can command premium price once again when the rainy days comes.

Thanks for sharing this info regarding freshly caught sardines. Unfortunately, I haven't tried fresh sardines yet, since they are rarely available in wet markets here. Nevertheless, I hope to experience the taste of freshly caught sardines someday, probably when I go to a different country where in fresh sardines are being sold at wet markets.

Honestly speaking, sardines have always been one of my favorite fish all this time. But I only like the canned sardines with the edible soft fish bone. The common sardines have too many bones on it and to make things worse, they are so small and hard to pick them out. For canned sardines, I especially liked the one with tomato sauce. I always heat it up with onions and serve with rice which I can really eat a lot because of the sardines. I did not know canned sardines still have this many benefits though.

Thanks for the response. Yeah, I can't remember if I have tried fresh sardines, but I remember when I was young, I had an uncle who eats fresh sardines and I think it really hard a lot of fish bones which might be troublesome to eat :). Hence, I prefer canned sardines after all since I could eat all of it, except for the can of course lolz.

Thanks for the response. Yeah I try my best to never ran out of supplies of sardines at home. Based on what I have read, in most places sardines are just sold in cans rather than fresh in wet markets because sardines are very perishable, they are easily spoiled.
