How do you feel that television effects your children?

I have two children and I was talking to a freind of mine the other day about the role that tv plays in the life of today's children. She has no kids of her own but works with about 200 kids a week. She has a firm opinion that today's kids should be watching less the 30 minutes of television a day. She also believes that shows geared towards younger children have had a firm impact in the ADD and ADHD levels in today's country. Her theory is that when we were younger, television programs that were geared towards a younger audience were strictly for entertainment purposes. The shows today that are geared towards children all have lessons in them. She says that children today get used to learning so rapidly, with a full day's lesson crammed into a half of a hour, that by the time they get to school they're still learning at that rapid rate and schools do not teach as quickly as the television programs so the kids get bored and that's where the basis for their learning disability comes from. She says it's too much of a good thing. She says that children should only be allowed to watch 30 minutes of television a day and that it should be programs strictly based on their entertainment value. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks!

My 2 years old son is addicted television but he is just watching barney, mickey mouse or any cartoon. I am not allowing him to watch violence. Mommies out there encourage your children watching educational movies or if they are watching sit beside your children and tell them that they will not immitate if there is a wrong deed.

my complaint is with commercials flashing overly sexy or horror movie scenes on young innocent eyes while we may be watching something kid friendly. i try to avoid demonic images in her psychie and get very irritated when my kid saw something that scared her, now she doesn't want to sleep by herself. I also don't allow teen shows, they do teach bad ideas to younger kids, always showing adults as being clueless morons. I came across an Icarly episode where she was in boys room making out, I was outraged that they're showing this to these kids. I don't let her watch very long on channels with commercials

I have a three year old daughter and a five year old son. My son is disabled and he moves around in his self propel wheelchair. My kids like to see an educational children's channel that is for preschool children. I think the program called 'Something Special' is wonderful for my son to watch. It shows Mr Tumble and some disabled children. It teaches letters of the alphabet and numbers up to ten. I think between half an hour to one hour of educational television is fine.

Pay very close attention to what your children are watching or what games they playing. Age restrictions have been well thought out and are there for a reason. Having said that there are exceptions if your child is very mature. I'm glad you asked this question its very valid in today's world. Since I'm a gamer I'm very experienced in movies and games. If ever you worried what you child plays or watches just ask me.

I know that when my kids watch shows with catty teens they morph into little smarty pants. I hate that shows made for kids would have such negative characters. Take iCarly. Carly was sweet and nice while Sam was a rude criminal type. That show was more for tweens. The shows meant for teens are just nasty. Everybody well you know. I mean come on. Lets at least try to have are kids believe that some things should be special. Not all shows are so bad. BTR is inspiring I guess. Some shows are educational. How to Rock is a little mixed. She left the perfs who were bullies. That part is great dealing with peer pressure and bullies. On the downside that girl, although friends with the not so cool kids, she is still totes a jerk. Yeah by the end of the show she might be a little nicer. She is totes self absorbed. Not the message I want my girls to copy.

I think now a days more and more people are spending time on the television and computer and does not spend time on the real world. I think less time should be spent on television and people should try to spent time on doing various other things.

Media influence on children grew, the more advanced technology and higher intensity. Though parents do not have enough time to pay attention to, accompany and supervise children. Children spend more time watching TV than doing anything else.
What they learned during that? They will learn that the violence solve problems. They also learn to sit at home and watch, instead of playing outside and exercising. It keeps them from learning important life-lessons, such as how to interact with peers, learn how to compromise and share in a world filled with other people.

First of all we gave up tv over 10 years ago. We do have Netflix, Dvd's, and the internet. We check things before the kids watch them. I do think all of the news and commercials have a negative effect on kids. They should be kids, playing, not worrying about what could happen next.

I don't have kids, but I really see the effect TV makes on youngsters this time.
First of all, the TV shows are mostly valueless and crappy in my country, because they wanted to lower the level of quality, so they can put cheaper-cost shows in primetime... and people got used to these, so now they won't even watch a theatre play broadcast or a nice film, if they have some "old bum celebrity looks for a wife" kind of show, which has all these uneducated exhibitionist trashy wh.res on it... or trashy Big Brother like shows and so on. This has become a standard, loads of people are watching them (I knew a 4-year old, the son of an ex-workmate of mine who legit watched Big Brother-like shows), and this is going to affect them. No quality, loads of swearing, people screwing with each other and getting into fights over petty things... they would watch these shows rather than reading. And that is visible on kids.
